Anne-Marie Waters, council member of the National Secular Society, begins the case for the opposition by denying that she and her fellow opposition speakers cause fear of Islam and blames instead "the actions of Islam itself".

She lists "9/11, 7/7, Mali, Somalia, gender discrimination, forced marriages, polygamy, amputation", and many more. To the opposition's claim that these acts belong to an "extreme fringe" which has misunderstood the words of the Qur'an, she described the executions for blasphemy and apostasy in Saudi Arabia, and asks "has there ever been a more spectacular misunderstanding?"

Waters concludes by arguing that it is the moderate Muslims who must "dance around meanings" and "stretch interpretations" when confronted with the fundamentally violent ideology of the Qur'an.

IRRC Votes in Favor of Chapter 4 Revisions Despite Outcry from Public

The PA Independent Regulatory Review Commission (IRRC) voted 3-2 in favor of the Chapter 4 regulations (adopting Pennsylvania Core Standards aka Common Core) despite public outcry, letters from legislators and comments from school administrators, teachers and staff.

It is more important than ever for you to continue this battle.  We need to focus our efforts on the following tasks:

1.         Local
Every supporter of local control needs to engage his/her school board and lobby them to write and pass a resolution rescinding Common Core.  You can find an example of a resolution that was recently approved by the Coatesville School Board here on the Stop Common Core in Pa Website:  Coatsville SD Resolution.

2.         Education
Every opponent of Common Core should continue to educate other citizens on what is happening through coffee klatches, school board meetings, soccer games and kitchen tables.

3.         Curriculum
We need to stay attentive to and stay on top of the curriculum and lesson plans in our area schools.  We need to red flag any lesson plan that is questionable.  Most importantly, we need to make sure our children gets the extra support particularly in the math so this will have a minimal effect on them.  You can report any questionable curriculum and lesson plans to the following Facebook page:  Inappropriate Common Core Lessons.  This page is also a great resource in helping you discover where some inappropriate lessons already exist.  We encourage you to become members of this page.

4.       Legislators
We will be distributing a list of the legislators who opposed Common Core and Chapter 4 regulations and actively fought alongside of us.  There will also be a list of legislators who actively supported it despite hundreds, even thousands of pleas to oppose it.  They ignored you, the voter. Finally, there are the legislators who did nothing.  They did nothing despite your constant tireless pleas to help oppose this monster.  All of these legislators will be up for election, including Governor Corbett who had and still has the power to stop Common Core now.

First Human-to-Human Brain Interface: Researcher Controls Colleague's Motions

University of Washington researchers have performed what they believe is the first noninvasive human-to-human brain interface, with researcher Rajesh Rao able to send a brain signal via the Internet to control the hand motions of fellow researcher Andrea Stocco. Rao wore a cap with electrodes hooked up to an electroencephalography machine, which reads electrical activity in the brain. On the other side of the university campus, Stocco wore a magnetic stimulation coil over his left motor cortex, which controls hand movement. Rao looked at a computer screen and played a simple video game with his mind; when he was supposed to fire at a target, he imagined moving his right hand to hit the "fire" button. Almost instantaneously, Stocco's right index finger moved involuntarily to hit the “fire” button.

Students Banned from Passing Out Constitutions on Constitution Day at Modesto Junior College

Modesto Junior College in California told a student that he could not pass out copies of the United States Constitution outside the student center on September 17, 2013—Constitution Day. Captured on video, college police and administrators demanded that Robert Van Tuinen stop passing out Constitution pamphlets and told him that he would only be allowed to pass them out in the college's tiny free speech zone, and only after scheduling it several days or weeks ahead of time.

There were originally three suspects: "The white male in the tan outfit has been identified and is not a suspect or person of interest." I have not found his name or identification anywhere but he was cleared. Oddly, the original report stated: "The two at large suspects were dressed in military garb but are not believed to be U.S. service personnel." Elsewhere, his description included a "khaki like uniform." The cleared suspect was "carrying a handgun and wearing a tan Navy-style uniform and a beret." If that is the case, what was a non-service personnel doing on a Navy base in military garb?

In addition, "authorities are looking for another man:" "a black man in his 50s with a long rifle in an olive colored garb." Another report stated this was a "olive-green, military-style uniform."

"Witnesses described a gunman opening fire from a fourth-floor overlook, aiming down on people in the cafeteria on the main floor. Others said a gunman fired at them in a third-floor hallway. It was not clear whether the witnesses on different floors were describing the same gunman.

Earlier reports may not be accurate since a Reuters report came at 9:12 PM EST.

The killer had "secret" clearance and was assigned to start working there as a civilian contractor with a military-issued ID card, his firm's CEO told Reuters.
"He did have a secret clearance. And he did have a CAC (common access card)," said Thomas Hoshko, CEO of "The Experts," which was helping service the Navy, Marine Corps intranet as a subcontractor for a Hewlett-Packard Enterprise Services contract.

Asked when he was supposed to start work, Hoshko said in a telephone interview: "That's what I got to find out, if he was supposed to start today ... It's not clear to me."

In contrast, the original report was the primary shooter is dead; he "was a civilian contractor who reportedly stole a military ID to gain access to the Navy Yard."

He was an "employee of a company called "The Experts," a subcontractor for an HP Enterprise Services military contract, Hewlett-Packard said."

HP said the contract was "to refresh equipment used on the Navy Marine Corps Intranet (NMCI) network."
He "claimed to be suffering from PTSD after helping rescue efforts in New York following the 9/11 terrorist attacks."

In 2004, he was arrested in Seattle for shooting the tires of someone's car during an anger-fueled 'blackout'.
The shooter "was arrested for disorderly conduct in August 2008 in DeKalb County, Georgia. He was released from custody after posting $364 bond (and posing for a booking photo). The details and disposition of the misdemeanor case could not be obtained."

He spent nearly four years in the Navy as a full-time reservist from May 2007 until he was discharged in January 2011: he was discharged in for 'misconduct.' During his military service "he was awarded the Global War on Terrorism Service Medal and the National Defense Service Medal."

The killer "was arrested in Fort Worth in 2010 for discharging a firearm." The charge was dropped against him.

The Orion at Oak Hill apartments in Fort Worth began eviction efforts against Aaron Alexis later in September 2010. Records show that he moved from the Oak Hill apartments in December 2010.

In early-July, a male roommate of Alexis’s called Fort Worth cops to report his suspicion that Alexis “put unknown substance in gas tank to damage vehicle,” according to a July 5 report.

He "recently visited Thailand and had been to Japan with a computer defense contractor, where he worked in information technology."

A friend--no name was given--said Alexis loved Buddhism. “He loved to go to temple, go to meditate in Thai and English,” the friend said. “He could do both of them.”

Nutpisit Suthamtewakul calling the shooter his "best friend" and they were roommates. He is the "owner of Happy Bowl Thai in White Settlement, TX.

Chris Childs, director of TheBlaze TV’s “The Pat & Stu Show,” told us he frequently visited the Thai restaurant Alexis worked at in Fort Worth, and got to know him over time.

“The thing that really struck me was the fact that he was really big into the shooter video games,” Childs told TheBlaze.

Impressions from Monday's Common Core event held at Notre Dame:

Dr. Williamson Evers of the Hoover Institution stated breaks that proponents of Common Core have absolutely no grass roots on this issue, and are terrified of our numbers and energy among activists.
 

Dr. Sandra Stotsky of the University of Arkansas noted that state boards of education around the U.S. adopted the Common Core standards before the standards were actually written, and that this breach of procedure might open up these actions by state boards to a legal challenge through the office of a state's Inspector General, or the equivalent office.  Dr. Stotsky also noted that CCSS emphasizes writing over reading, when decades of experience tell us this should be the other way around.
 

Andrew Kern of the CiRCE Institute noted that it is stories that help children develop their minds, not the informational texts favored by Common Core.
 

Dr. James Milgram of Stanford University stated that CCSS embraces the teaching of Geometry without proofs, and the teaching of Algebra without conics and logarithms, even though these are the effective methods for teaching this material.
 

Ze'ev Wurman of the Hoover Institution noted that success in college mathematics, and achieving a STEM degree, depends more on taking challenging mathematics courses in high school than any other single factor.  Common Core abandons the idea of having students take the gateway course of Algebra I in grade 8, which is critical to the students reaching Trigonometry, Pre-Calculus, and Calculus in high school.  Mr. Wurman also stated that CCSS expects students in grades 1-2 to master difficult concepts, then slows to almost no progress in learning expectations in grades 3-6.  As a result, by grade 8, students are one or two complete grade levels behind the expectations of previous Indiana standards.  Students do not close this achievement gap during high school.
 

Dr. Megan Koschnick, a clinical child psychologist from Indianapolis, described how Common Core pushes certain abstract learning concepts down to kindergarten and first grade, even though many children at these ages have not yet reached the reasoning stages required for this learning.  This will likely cause stress and discord for students, teachers, and parents.

William Estrada of the Home School Legal Defense Association and Jane Robbins of the American Principles Project both raised excellent points regarding the depth and scope of the data collection and sharing that is planned as part of CCSS.
