Ill Wind, Ian Hunter, YUI Orta, 1988 Tilting the Mirror, Stranded In Reality, Vol. 1

Before YUI Orta Ronson got interested in working with Ian again and Ill Wind is one of the songs that Hunter was preparing before recording. Hunter at times has written with Robbie Alter and this demo from the YUI Orta sessions was recorded in Ian's bedroom studio in NYC around 1988. In fact, Alter did this in one take. Despite the similarity this is not the Mott The Hoople song Ill Wind Blowing that escaped Hunter's memory but Ill Wind was originally issued on The Journey, Once Bitten Twice Shy, and Tilting the Mirror

Ian threatened for years to do a gospel blues song and he delivered. The song is considerably different for Ian's musical work and is about an average bloke in the 1920s. He works in the morning cotton fields but he also made a record in the afternoon, while the record continues to sell. Unfortunately, the singer received nothing and he is understandably angry. It is one of the more unusual songs in the Hunter catalog but fairly typical of how musicians are often taken advantage of and do not always profit from their creativity.

There is a live version release from 2000.

I don't see the song on either of the following as noted in the book Stranded In Reality; however, I see Ill Wind on the Once Bitten Twice Shy release.

Ill Wind3:22This demo from the YUI Orta sessions was issued on the compilations The JourneyOnce Bitten Twice Shy andTilting The Mirror - Rarities (box set only).
Ill Wind (live 19th May 2000)4:52This live version (recorded at The Robin 2, Bilston England) can be found on Bag Of Tricks (Vol 1) (box set only).

Originally issued on Two Miles From Heaven. It can also be found on the Mental Train box set.

Professional Lover, Ian Hunter, after All of The Good Ones Are Taken, Tilting the Mirror, Stranded In Reality

Hunter wrote another song for Arthur Baker but apparently the effort did not go anywhere although it was supposed to go to Tina Turner.

Wake Up Call, (Baker/Tina B/Mandel), Ian Hunter, after All of The Good Ones Are Taken, Tilting the Mirror, Stranded In Reality

Wake Up Call (Baker/Tina B/Mandel) is another song done for DJ and producer Arthur Baker. The call from Baker was a surprise for Hunter asking him to do the vocal for the 1986 independently made American action-fantasy, sci-fi film The Wraith with Charlie Sheen. It only took one day. Overall, Ian worked with Baker for a week and they got along well. A song, Professional Lover, was supposed to go to Tina Turner which sounded like a great idea but apparently Arthur did not follow up. In any case, Hunter liked the sound that Baker got and one track for a film was lucrative by putting energy into one song and you are done in two days.

Wake Up Call

(Ian Hunter)

You woke me up this morning
Making me shake like a kick in the face
What are you, some kind of warning?
You're telling me to get out of this place

I can feel the power
I can feel the sun breaking over me
I know this is the hour
I won't waste the time that's been given to me

You've got to hear that wake up call
It's a new day, you've got to give it your all
You've got to hear that wake up call
It's a new day, you've got to give it your all

My wheels are set in motion
The engine's running in overdrive
I feel so much emotion
I'm so glad to be alive

I wait all night to hear you
But you might never come
Now you're here and I won't let you (hey)
Slip out from under my thumb

Life moves so fast
You could miss it if you blink
There's so much living we could do
And there ain't much time to think
(Wake it up)

It's a new day
It's a new day (it's a new day)

Life moves so fast
And you can miss it if you blink
There's so much living we could do
And there ain't much time to think
(yeah)

You've got to hear that wake up call
It's a new day, you've got to give it your all
You've got to hear that wake up call
It's a new day, you've got to give it your all

You've got to hear that, hear that whistle blow
Oooh, yeah, I wanna hear that call
You've got to hear that wake up call
It's a new day Oh oh oh oh oh

It's a new day (it's a new day)
It's a new day (it's a new day)
It's a new day
It's a new day

Yeah, you've got to hear that wake up call
It's a new day, you've got to give it your all
You've got to hear that wake up call
It's a new day, oh oh oh oh oh
yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah ...

Good Man in a Bad Time, (Tanner/Reede), Ian Hunter, Tilting the Mirror, Stranded In Reality

Excerpt:

Hunter and Ronson covered Good Man in a Bad Time, (Tanner/Reede) written by Marc Tanner and Jon Reede. The producer and DJ Arthur Baker asked Hunter to perform the song since he liked his voice. Ian recorded this in Baker's Manhattan Studio for use in the 1985 horror movie Fright Night. The song is absolutely ideal accompanying the visual in the film.

Good Man In A Bad Time

(Ian Hunter)

Inside, closed quarters
Night's calling under blood red skies
This madness, starts burning
The victim of a strange desire
Mistaken, we follow
Restless emotions take you down
Unwilling, still hunger
For lustful pleasures I have found
He's a good man in a bad time
He's a good man in a bad time

Soft voices, seduce you
A butterfly in a spider's web
Infectious, behavior
You're damned to do it all again (and again and again and again...)
He's a good man in a bad time
He's a good man in a bad time

Don't cry, darling
I'll be with you
All night, darling
Deep within you
He's a good man in a bad time
He's a good man in a bad time
He's a good man in a bad time
He's a good man in a bad time
He's a good man in a bad time

Great Expectations (You Never Know What to Expect), Ian Hunter, 1980s post All of The Good Ones Are Taken, Tilting the Mirror, Stranded In Reality

Excerpt:

Great Expectations (You Never Know What to Expect) was written for Orion Pictures' college comedy movie Up the Creek. Hunter first recorded it with Virgin Records' heavy metal band Shooting Star. In a sense, this song is about Ian's daughter Tracie but more tongue-in-cheek. She is an independent person and Hunter works to stay in her good graces. Ian went to Pasha Music in LA but the band couldn't play the song correctly since it seems simple, but Hunter's music is more sophisticated when actually performed. Displeased with the sound Ian sent a demo that he created instead and what we hear is the result.

On Track Ian Hunter is shipping soon. Want to promote Ian? The publisher is marketing the book but asked for help from us fans in the Hunter orbit. Great Expectations

(Ian Hunter)

Now my little girl's a cute little thing
But she ain't grown up much yet
She plays with the toys
N' she plays with the boys
And you never know what to expect

She does what she wants
She says what she wants
Cause she knows what she wants - she gets
And she tells me lies, she makes me worry a lot
And I never know what to expect

Well you never know what, you never know what,
you never know what - comes next
They tell you lies, they make you worry a lot
And you never know what to expect

Now my little girl likes to travel a lot
She thinks she's one of the jet set
She talks to strangers
She don't care about the dangers
And she never knows what to expect

I said, "You little Creep
You're in too deep
You're gonna get your neck wet
Stop messin' with the boogers in the parking lot
Cause you never know what to expect"

I said, you never know what, you never know what,
you never know what - comes next
You're messing with the boogers in the parking lot
And you never know what to expect (do ya?)

Her old man came to the house last night
He said, "I'm just a little bit upset"
I said, "What's she done?"
He said, "Everyone!"
I said, "You never know what to expect"

No you never know what, no you never know what,
no you never know what - comes next
You love 'em to death, and in the very next breath
You never know what to expect

You never know what, you never know what,
you never know what - comes next
But like it or not, you're all that I've got
You never know what to expect

You never know what to expect
I got great expectations (great expectations)
I got great expectations (great expectations)
You know, I got great expectations (great expectations)
I got great expectations (great expectations)

You never know what, you never know what,
you never know what - comes next
You love 'em to death, and in the very next breath
You never know, you never know, you never know what

(I'm the) Teacher, (Hunter, Ronson) Tilting the Mirror, Ian Hunter, Stranded In Reality

A first ever movie composition (I'm the) Teacher was a song to order by movie people but Hunter considers it to contain one of his best lyrics. The movie producer was a fan and Ian had a lyric in mind: "The question's arisen, is this a person, some say it is, some say it isn't." And, the rest came quickly. Starting with that first strong line the remainder of the lyrics came in five minutes. With a good line you have won half the battle. Ian had the movie script and he knew the log line. There was more interaction between Hunter and the producer since originally the song was a ballad but a faster song was required. Revved up with Ronson's help, Ian got a gold record, so not much to complain about!

Hunter does appropriately demonstrate the dedication of many teachers:

If there's just one weed in this flowerless grave
If there's just one seed I can save
I'm going to reach ya
Pleased to meet ya, I'm the teacher

The song appeared in the United Artists Picture for the 1984 comedy Teachers starring Nick Nolte.

I'm The Teacher

(Ian Hunter)

The question's arisen is this a prison
Some say it is, some say it isn't
Why do I try? nobody listens
I pass by like an intermission

If there's just one weed in this flowerless grave
If there's just one seed I can save
I'm going to reach ya
Pleased to meet ya, I'm the teacher

Outlaws, cruisers, junkies, boozers
Take a back seat, with the three time losers
They're all having a ball, down at juvenile hall
By looking so small they must be victims of the system

I've been inside, (where the lies are hide)
Are you satisfied I never should have tried to beat you
I beseech you, sad little freaker
Pleased to meet you, I'm the teacher

They can snap your soul, blow it away
Like a fragile leaf on a windy day
Can you read? can you write? they couldn't care less
You can graduate on American Express, no personal checks

What do I do to get through to you?
Somebody sue the suit, don't let em eat ya
Don't you let 'em defeat ya Don't let 'em mistreat ya
'Cause sooner or later
They're going to cheat ya
Pleased to meet ya, I'm the teacher
Yeah.

Sunshine Eyes, Tilting the Mirror, Ian Hunter, Stranded In Reality

Sunshine Eyes is a demo written about Ian's youngest son and Trudi's only child, Jesse. When Jesse was small in NYC their home featured an Oberheim drum machine and keyboard. Oberheim was a limited product but Hunter had quite a few. It could have been improved and the mix more professional but Ian enjoyed the simplicity of the song as appropriate for a child.

Na Na Na, Tilting the Mirror, Ian Hunter, Stranded In Reality, Long Odds n' Outtakes Bonus CD

Na Na Na is a sax workout and a 1950s style romp inspired by Little Richard. Early in his career Hunter wrote this song which sounds ideal for the early rock 'n' roller. There were even some words created for this song and Ian says they were good. Hunter openly admires Richard by calling him the Governor, the greatest of all time, and he has the finest natural voice for rock 'n' roll. Paul Rodgers is good as well but second to Little Richard. Hunter thinks his early bands were incredible and second to none; when Jimi Hendrix was in his band he told him to cool it. Jimi went on to other famous things.

There are two versions one shorter and another longer.

If the Slipper Don't Fit, Tilting the Mirror, Ian Hunter, Stranded In Reality

If the Slipper Don't Fit is an outtake from the 1976 All American Alien Boy record which Hunter enjoyed hearing again after so many years when the box set was proposed. There was some discussion in 2015 of adding lyrics, similar to what happened with One Fine Day and Colwater High in 2005, but since Hunter rarely looks backwards, it didn't happen. Ian kept looking ahead to the next studio album. If he had written lyrics the original idea was to finish the slipper idea with `then don't put them on.' Similar to Common Disease, it was too fast for the more reflective Alien Boy release.

Common Disease, Tilting the Mirror, Ian Hunter, Stranded In Reality

Common Disease sounds cliched and as Hunter notes it was written to a formula and as a result dropped in 1976. There were rockers for the All American Alien Boy release but since they did not fit the mood of the more reflective record this is an outtake and Ian just went on to other tracks. Not surprisingly, since Hunter rarely looks backward.

Fun, (Ian Hunter/Mark Clarke/Hilly Michaels), Ian Hunter, All of the Good Ones Are Taken

Excerpt

Fun is an odd piece and is intricate, bumpy, while mixed with guitar riffs, horn sounds, and a cute spoken middle-eight. The song has a hint of desperation as we think we are supposed to having fun even though these days it is not like the enjoyable things we did it in the past. Fun may not be all that much fun after all. It seems to be a song that suggests we need to go out and have a good time even when fun may not be in the offing. Mark Clarke, bass, and Hilly Michaels, drums, get co-songwriting credit on this tune.

Fun

(Ian Hunter/Mark Clarke/Hilly Michaels)

I got a shower curtain stickin' to my back
And the o'd' cologne sure packs a whack
I got blood on my razor - my face is in shock
'N' my hair hangin' down like a Rastaman's locks

I think I'm ready - I'm gettin' ready
Gettin' ready Teddy - we're all gonna have fun

I gotta rock 'n' roll - rocket says "you gotta go fast"
'N' the radio's blarin' out a blast from the past
Lucille's in the back screamin' "gimme a break"
Your momma didn't tell you - that's the chance you take

It's oh so sad
When this love is all that we have
To swallow a lifetime away
With so many hours in each day

But calm your foolish heart
Our girlfriend's can't keep us apart
I'm with you every step of the way
Baby - what more can I say

The only problem is
I wanna party - get down - boogie - have a great time
Well its 36.50 for a room with a view
O' the empire state 'n' the pizza place, too

Lucille's got my body in a total eclipse
She's all lips 'n' hips - you know - one o' those trips
We're gettin' ready - she's gettin' ready
Gettin' ready Teddy - we're all gonna have fun

Your Way, Ian Hunter, only on the box set version of Strings Attached

Needing a new song to include Your Way was written specifically for the two Oslo shows in 2002 from Strings Attached but it is a song that really fell through the cracks. It was not included on the album because producer Andy York and Hunter were not keen on the performance. Later, upon reflection, they both wondered why they didn't include it. One reservation was that `do it your way,' could be compared to a song popularized in 1969 by Frank Sinatra and written by Paul Anka: My Way. Nonetheless, they seem unrelated and the song is just about the most positive and upbeat song that Hunter has ever written. It is an affirmation of the uniqueness of people, the gifts we all have, think for yourself, and put the past behind you.

The song is available only on the box set version of Strings Attached

Ian Hunter On Track for Sonicbond Publising, The DoctorOfDigital@pm.me

"My Way" is a song popularized in 1969 by Frank Sinatra set to the music of the French song "Comme d'habitude" composed by Jacques Revaux with lyrics by Gilles Thibaut and Claude François[1][2] and first performed in 1967 by Claude François. Its English lyrics were written by Paul Anka and are unrelated to the original French song.

The song was a success for a variety of performers including Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and Sid Vicious. Sinatra's version of "My Way" spent 75 weeks in the UK Top 40, which is 3rd place all-time.

Your Eyes, Ian Hunter, bonus EP with initial copies of Shrunken Heads

Your Eyes was included in the bonus EP with initial copies of Shrunken Heads. This sounds like a love song but from a much different angle than the usual. Hunter wonders if he could see the world through the other's eyes. It would be fantastic to understand what the other sees. It's like saying I could be more positive and optimistic then.

Wouldn't it be wild?
Wouldn't it be wonderful?

It will never happen but it would certainly turn my entire world around he seems to be saying. Hunter expresses a sentiment that many people share and wish they could see the world differently from the perspective of someone else that they love.

Ian Hunter On Track for Sonicbond Publishing, TheDoctorOfDigital@pm.me

Your Eyes*

(Ian Hunter)

Baby baby the things you do
You make me wonder what's going on inside of you
Mother Nature's sweeter sex
I never know what you're gonna do next

If I could only see the world through your eyes
It would be a brighter place
If I could only see the world through your eyes
Wouldn't it be wild?
Wouldn't it be wonderful?

Ooh baby baby we're different
I don't deny the fact that you are heaven sent
I know that you're there for me
You care for me in my winters of discontent

If I could only see the world through your eyes
It would be a brighter place
If I could only see the world through your eyes
Wouldn't it be weird?
Wouldn't it be wonderful?

If I could only see the world through your eyes
Oh yeah, oh yeah
If I could only see the world through your eyes
Oh yeah, oh yeah

Never the twain shall meet
It's kinda like losing your mind or your mystique
So I stagger on through the night
Like a sore child, following your bright lights

If I could only see the world through your eyes
It would be a sweeter place, yeah
If I could only see the world through your eyes
Wouldn't it be wild?
Wouldn't it be wonderful?
Oh yeah

If I could only, if I could only
If I could only see the world through your eyes
If I could only, if I could only
If I could only see the world through your eyes
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
See the world through your eyes
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
See the world through your eyes

You Stepped Into My Dreams, Ian Hunter, Long Odds and Outtakes, from Short Back n' Sides

You Stepped Into My Dreams is pretty good and a just miss for inclusion on the album. In a way this song is similar to Arms and Legs since despite the strong feeling of love this might be about the one that got away. The guy is leaving since:

We both gotta be moving on

Sometimes you see a lover and she's made for love
But you let that lover slip by
You believe and yet she's so hard to get
And you never know the reasons why

He is clearly enamored but he's getting on a plane maybe never to return although she stepped into his dreams.

You Stepped Into My Dreams

(Ian Hunter)

That's it baby, take one last look
We gotta go catch a plane
Then you won't die, and I won't die
But we won't ever be the same

Oh I can feel a mood coming down on me
Such a good thing disappears
I can sense the loss creeping up on us
And it's deeper than any tears I've known

You stepped into my dreams
You opened up the door
You stepped into my dreams
I want you back for more

You stepped into my dreams tonight

In the shadows of the night you saw me
In the morning you were gone
Won't you blow a kiss to me baby
We both gotta be moving on

Sometimes you see a lover and she's made for love
But you let that lover slip by
You believe and yet she's so hard to get
And you never know the reasons why

She stepped into your dreams
She opened up your door
She stepped into your dreams
You want her so much more

She stepped into your dreams tonight yeah

Oh when you're doing what you're doing
What do you think of me babe
There ain't much else to say
In another time, in another place
Things might have turned out okay

I can feel a darkness I can never conceal
Sometimes I get just a little insane
I can feel emotions like the mighty oceans
They're driving me again, and I know

You stepped into my dreams
You opened up the door
You stepped into my dreams
I want you back for more

You stepped into my dreams
And I don't know what to do
I'm so scared of losing you.
