This is the first songwriting credit under Ian Hunter Patterson's given name. On Rabbit Foot and Toby Time and Half Moon Bay with Mott The Hoople Ian also co-wrote songs using his family name. Ian signed this 2 July 2013 after the final gig at Maxwell's, Hoboken, N.J. When Hunter was signing it he didn't recognize the record and once I explained what it was he said he doesn't even have a copy of the release. Ian never looks back so not surprisingly he has less interest in an early songwriting effort (though, if it were my first, I'd treasure it). A first love, a first car, or a first anything most people usually hang on to.

I said `Here's an old vinyl for you; what story or anecdote can you tell me about it that no one knows?' At first Hunter couldn't really see it because the light was bad so I told him what the 45 single was and he said this is a really old one. He said well you know it was written by Freddie "Fingers" Lee and he didn't make any money on it but it was recorded by Tom Jones and he had a big hit with it, he made money. I asked if he planned to play bass like he did on "Workin'" and "Drive" and he reminded me that he did play a bit of bass at the reunion gig in 2009. Then, Ian said something unexpected. He said it was a great deal of fun in those days, "more fun than Mott The Hoople." I thought these were the more fun early days because Ian was under a great deal of pressure to write hits and it was a grind during the Mott tours.

When he autographed the 8-track I told Ian he has outlasted the Beatles, The Rolling Stones, the Who, Led Zeppelin or any classic rock band; Hunter was a bit taken aback when I said this. I had no idea he would still be rocking long after 2001. Rocking for a long time also fits the theme of Defiance and This is What I'm Here For.

L.A.'s Phonograph Record Magazine February 1973

After the gig I had Ian sign Phonograph Record Magazine, February, 1973 (with Mott The Hoople on the cover), that the Licorice Pizza music store chain carried. Ian said I remember signing the handbill at the Sellersville, PA gig last week. I reminded Ian that this was the period between guitarist Mick Ralphs leaving the band and when Luther Grosvenor, guitar, joined Mott The Hoople. They had only played a live TV appearance at the Aquarius Theater in LA and then their first gig at the Hollywood Palladium in September 1973. Ian does not recall the gig but he remembered that they only played the Palladium once which is correct. This was the first time that I had seen the band and my first rock concert. Ian said that Luther could be dodgy but when he joined the band he lifted their morale. Luther's contribution made sense since the band had already lost not only Ralphs but Verden Allen on keyboards as well. To supplement the 1973 American tour Mick Bolton and Morgan Fisher had been added on keyboards. In any case, Luther offered a great deal on stage. I agree Luther was a wild man; he added a great deal to their stage presence.

Ian said I was talking about way back and the early days. Ian reminisced about when Keith Moon rang him up to go out and he had 24 bottles of champagne. Ian didn't know what happened to the bottles. Ian said he was new to famous rockers ringing him up so he just went along. Keith took him to Frank Zappa's house where they listened to two-inch tapes and Frank asked Ian what he thought. Ian simply said it was great so he had him listen to more tapes but Ian had no idea what the music was about. Dweezil, Frank's son was there and they had cats, one staring at Ian oddly. Ian said that he was talking to Jakob, Dylan's son, and the same tape listening experience happened to him. Zappa liked people to come over and listen to his music which no one understood. 

Self-indulgent time since I was old enough and could get a ride into Hollywood from a high school buddy to see my first rock concert. We saw Orphan, Joe Walsh and Barnstorm, Blue Öyster Cult, but most importantly, Mott The Hoople! This was the first live gig with Luther "Ariel Bender" Grosvenor. I was hooked from 14 September 1973 after this awesome show at the Hollywood Palladium. 

I saw the original Diary in a record story that didn't last long in Cerritos, CA; there were two copies and I bought one. Maybe I should have bought them both.

Jim Ladd Hosts Ian Hunter on Innerview, 1976, KMET, "The Might Met." Ladd is one of the few notable remaining freeform rock DJs in US commercial radio. Ladd first gained national prominence as host of the hour long, nationally syndicated radio program Innerview, which aired weekly on over 160 stations nationwide for twelve years. Loving music and getting into broadcasting was a thought for some of us living in SoCal at the time.

Mr. Big, Seppuku, back cover, recorded in 1978. Hunter was asked to produce Mr. Big and added piano, organ, and guitar during the sessions, along with Peter Oxendale on keyboards. The result was Seppuku, a hard rock effort that was buried by EMI Records for over twenty years. Señora was co-written by Ian but was not released at the time; this is a terrific power ballad about love and briefly a single in 1978. EMI withdrew it instead of pushing it but maybe with New Wave and punk hitting then the timing was off since it's a bit Dylanesque as well.

Chrysalis Records 1979-1981

Released 26 January 1979, Generation X, Valley of the Dolls. The LP hit #51 in the UK Albums Chart, and contained the UK singles: "King Rocker", which reached #11 in the UK Singles Chart in January 1979; and, Valley of the Dolls, which reached #23.

Barry Manilow, Ships, 1979, the song became a Top Ten cover at #9 by Barry Manilow with key changes and modulations that had never occurred to Ian. When he was asked if he minded the different musical direction and mellow Manilow covering the song he responded that it made him a pretty penny; there is nothing to complain about that.

When signing Ian remarked that this is an old album; most fans had the most recent LP to sign. Hunter added that it was his leather jacket superimposed on all the band members; easy now to do with digital tools but I suppose a bit more difficult in 1969.

In 1980, Hunter's guitarist Tommy Morrongiello was a friend of Sam The Band from New Jersey, and he arranged for Ian to produce them at Media Sound in New York. Ian produced the A-side, "Dangerous Eyes."
