China, Ian Hunter, Long Odds and Outtakes

This is a rare Ian Hunter track with Mick Ronson on vocals released on Long Odds and Out-takes" containing alternate mixes and unreleased material from the Chrysalis era while a  slightly different version is a "rough mix," and 13 seconds shorter, an earlier fade-out, is on the compilation From The Knees Of My Heart.

Not only is the track rare but the subject matter is unusual as well. Hunter seems to almost always write about what he knows first hand Britain and America but here he travels to the Far East. Yet, he connects China to geography closer to home, the River Tyne. Tyne is in North East England close to Hunter's roots near the Scottish border. Ian states:

"China I can feel you by my side
Across the bay, across the Tyne
Can you hear me say"
Hunter seems to be reaching out from his native land to an unnamed Chinese lady pictured as the entire nation. There may have been harsh words since he "Didn't mean to say the things I said" and he urges "China, think before you speak," but this gentle, mellow song seems more about harmony and domestic peace. The song depicts a harbor, Chinese landscape, and fishing. It's a lovely tune rendered by Ronno.

The River Tyne /ˈtn/ (listen) is a river in North East England. Its length (excluding tributaries) is 73 miles (118 km).[1] It is formed by the North Tyne and the South Tyne, which converge at Warden Rock near Hexham in Northumberland at a place dubbed 'The Meeting of the Waters'.

The Tyne Rivers Trust measure the whole Tyne catchment as 2,936 km2 (1,134 square miles), containing 4,399 km (2,733 miles) of waterways.[3]

Course[edit]

North Tyne[edit]

The North Tyne rises on the Scottish border, north of Kielder Water. It flows through Kielder Forest, and in and out of the border. It then passes through the village of Bellingham before reaching Hexham.

China

(Ian Hunter)

China, China, the evening's moving in
See you, soon now, the boat moves with the wind
China, China, I can see the harbour lights
Light your, fire, we'll be warm tonight

China, China, the thoughts drift from the sea
I'm dreaming, of you, wear your dress for me
China, China, the oceans the rain shines on the wheel
The seagulls flying lower now
China I can feel you by my side
Across the bay, across the Tyne
Can you hear me say

China, China, wear your hair down low
Lady, Lady, you're frozen to the bone
China, China, the catch was good today
The oilskins clinging to my back
And the lantern gently sways

Oh don't you cry, the kids to bed
Didn't mean the things I said

China, China, the years go rolling by
Laughter, sorrow, I will not make you cry
China, China, think before you speak
Always remember the ocean hauls as deep
And if I'm tired of feeling low
Don't let me sleep, you know

China, China, the men are on the quay
Drinking, smoking, talking quietly
The water's calmer now
All my work is done
So China, see ya.

Review

At the end of 1980 Ian returned to the studio to record the follow-up to Schizophrenic and Welcome To The Club. Mick had effectively stopped playing live earlier in the year, and Ian himself was unsure which (musical) direction to take. He got Mick Jones as producer, and on paper the fusion of Mott The Hoople with The Clash should have produced a phenomenal album.

I'll make no bones about it - I hate this album. The material is mixed, and the production (and all the sound effects Mick Jones added) IMO ruined the good songs on it. At the time Ian liked the album, with Mick using different production techniques in the studio. But today he hardly ever plays material from it, a sure sign that it ain't up there with the best.

The 2-CD set offers excellent packaging and excellent sound quality. The original album is on one CD, and a second CD ("Long Odds and Out-takes") containing alternate mixes and unreleased material from the Chrysalis era.

Central Park n' West, Ian Hunter, Short Back and Sides

This opening track Central Park n' West stands up well despite a mixed response to this LP overall mostly as a result of Mick Jones' production. There were sound effects Jones added and different production techniques which didn't always serve the song but on this track the added elements  work.

The song seems firmly ensconced in New York City and referring to the Central Park West Historic District between the 61st and 97th Streets of the title. Ian and Mick Ronson lived in the Mayflower Hotel for six month and its residents have included actors, athletes, CEOs, hedge fund managers, entrepreneurs, and musicians including Sting. The song is Ian's attempt to say something good about the City when it was slagged in the English press and the lyrics came to him one night  when he was looking out a ninth floor window. It was originally a poem and Mick Jones liked the lyrics and wrote some chords for it including lots of little sounds that Ian says he never would have thought of.

The landmarks of Central Park and West include the Dakota gaining infamy when resident, John Lennon, was shot dead outside the building on December 8, 1980. Ian mentions listening to Frank Carillo who is an American rock musician, perhaps best known from a band called Doc Holliday. You have to be crazy to live in New York City but still it's the best which is probably Ian's own reflections on the city having been a resident himself. He really catches the vibe and energy of the city with its music, waitresses, and "soul woman."

1981 saw a live version of the tune released as well from the Dr. Pepper Music Festival, Pier 84, New York NY.

15 Central Park West was built on the sites of the Mayflower Hotel, which dated from 1926, and a vacant lot. In May 2004, a joint venture composed of Arthur and William Lie Zeckendorf, Whitehall Street International, and Global Holdings Inc. purchased the Mayflower and the adjacent vacant lot for $401 million. Robert A.M. Stern Architects was selected to design the building in August 2005, and construction began the next month, when the building's sales office opened. All apartments had been sold by early 2007, and the first tenants moved into the building in early 2008. Following 15 Central Park West's opening, many condominiums were sold at high prices. Its residents have included actors, athletes, CEOs, hedge fund managers, and entrepreneurs.

The Central Park West Historic District is located along Central Park West, between 61st and 97th Streets, on the Upper West Side of Manhattan in New York City, United States. The district was added to the National Register of Historic Places on November 9, 1982. The district encompasses a portion of the Upper West Side-Central Park West Historic District as designated by the New York City Landmarks Preservation Commission, and contains a number of prominent New York City designated landmarks, including the Dakota, a National Historic Landmark. The buildings date from the late 19th century to the early 1940s and exhibit a variety of architectural styles. The majority of the district's buildings are of neo-Italian Renaissance style, but Art Deco is a popular theme as well.

Frank Carillo (born July 14, 1950) is an American rock musician. In 1971, manager Phil Lorito formed a band around Frank Carillo called Doc Holliday, with Carillo, Bob Mayo, Tom Arlotta and Bob Liggio. In 1973 they released one album, Doc Holliday.

You have to be crazy to live in New York City but still it's the best which is probably Ian's own reflections on the city having been a resident himself. He really catches the vibe and energy of the city with its music, waitresses, and "soul woman."

Central Park n' West

(Ian Hunter)

The Gulf and Western Garbage
Just ain't the prettiest smell
When you're sleeping on the 4th floor up
It's like a living hell
New York's finest rounding up the bums
The firemen get no rest,
and ambulances signal death, on Central Park 'n' West.

Now there ain't no sheets upon my bed,
just a mattress and some wine.
The rain is pouring through the night
and I'm glad my life is mine.
When Frank Carillo plays guitar
trying to get it off his chest.
He gets the words he needs tonight
on Central Park 'n' West.

And I think, I think, I think, I think, I think it's the best,
when I'm locked in the middle of New York city on Central Park 'n' West
and I know, I know, I know, I know, I know it's a mess,
but you've got to be crazy to live in the city, and New York city's the best.
And we all want just someone just like me
in the city we call home.
She leaves me sometimes when I write,
'cause I write better on my own.
Bag ladies take my dollars)
put my conscience to the test.
But waitresses give me coffee free
on Central Park 'n' West.

So sing soul woman, sing the songs
it's time to sing them now.
I'm getting more than high from hearin' 'em
don't sing them quiet, sing them loud.
For you sang with the best of them
but now you're just a guest.
I tell you we'll get a hotel room
on Central Park 'n' West.

'Cause I think, I think, I think, I think, I think it's the best,
when I'm locked in the middle of New York city on Central Park 'n' West
and I know, I know, I know, I know, I know it's a mess,
but you've got to be crazy to live in the city, and New York city's the best.
I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, oh yeah.

I think, I think, I think, I think, I think it's the best,
when I'm locked in the middle of New York city on Central Park 'n' West.

I know, I know, I know, I know, I know it's a mess,
but you've got to be crazy to live in the city, and New York city's the best.

Captain Void n' The Video Jets, Ian Hunter, All of the Good Ones Are Taken.

Hunter addressed the ridiculousness of television (actually the name of an American show) for a second time but Captain Void n' The Video Jets is in a fanciful and comical mood. This is a bit of an odd tune but the space visitors concept will be revisited and improved on Stranded In Reality. The song is chock full of studio effects and fits in with the remainder of the LP because as a whole the release is a mixed bag.

"Captain to Candida" starts the song so it's the captain speaking to yeasts I suppose because they spread as fungal infections worldwide. They are machines looking through the glass to hypnotize people. Finally, Hunter states:

"We don't hit lovers - we leave them alone
We just hit children who rot in their homes."

The import of the lyrics is the power TV has over people but here described as an off-the-wall fantasy. The aliens take over through TVs. Hunter speculates he must have been playing a video game and losing when he wrote this.

To end with "Mr. Jones" the name must stand as an everyman, common name since Mick Jones did not participate in the effort as he had on Short Back 'n' Sides.

Candida is a genus of yeasts and is the most common cause of fungal infections worldwide.[1] In fact, it is the largest genus of medically important yeasts.

Candide, ou l'Optimisme (/kɒnˈdd/ kon-DEED,[5] French: [kɑ̃did] (listen)) is a French satire written by Voltaire, a philosopher of the Age of Enlightenment,[6] first published in 1759. The novella has been widely translated, with English versions titled Candide: or, All for the Best (1759); Candide: or, The Optimist(1762); and Candide: Optimism (1947).[7] It begins with a young man, Candide, who is living a sheltered life in an Edenic paradise and being indoctrinated with Leibnizian optimism by his mentor, Professor Pangloss.[8]The work describes the abrupt cessation of this lifestyle, followed by Candide's slow and painful disillusionment as he witnesses and experiences great hardships in the world. Voltaire concludes Candide with, if not rejecting Leibnizian optimism outright, advocating a deeply practical precept, "we must cultivate our garden", in lieu of the Leibnizian mantra of Pangloss, "all is for the best" in the "best of all possible worlds".

Captain Void 'n' The Video Jets

(Ian Hunter)

Captain to Candida - we just hit earth
Everyone's strange here - don't know what they're worth
Got this idea - we're gonna be machines
We'll play a part in their imaginary dreams

Say hi - hi - hi
Have you ever stopped to figure out why
We're Captain Void 'n' the Video Jets
Go go get - go go get
Your Captain Void 'n' the Video Jets
We're the original space cadets

Captain to Candida - we're spreading fast
They're watchin' us - watching them through the glass
We got them hypnotized - under our control
We're nearly ready to put the world on hold

Say hi - hi - hi
Have you ever stopped to figure out why
We're Captain Void 'n' the Video Jets
Place your bets - place your bets
On Captain Void 'n' the Video Jets
We hide inside your T.V. set

We don't hit lovers - we leave them alone
We just hit children who rot in their homes
Something is happening
Now Mr. Jones just touch me (c'mon)
Turn me on!

Review

Ian recorded this album at the end of 1982, and is a real mix of styles. Mick Ronson was absent, as he was seriously considering quitting the music business ("At one point I was even considering becoming a chef" - Mick). Strongest tracks are Speechless (later to be covered by Status Quo), and the title track. Every Step of the Way was also later covered by The Monkees on their Listen To The Band box set.

Side two closes with a slow version of All Of The Good Ones Are Taken, while side one opens with a fast version. The original version was "lost", but the record company persuaded Ian to re-record it ("But I couldn't get the feel back" - Ian). The fast version was released as a single, which was accompanied by a video which was shown for a while on MTV.

Broadway, Ian Hunter, Overnight Angels, Vol. 3

Broadway is a fine ballad and a moody reflection os show business traumas. Hunter showcases his piano and vocals backed by a Broadway-style choir. Perhaps reminiscing of Mott The Hoople as the first rock band on Broadway this ditty is about a girl who is seeking success on The Great White Way.

The production limitations of the LP notwithstanding several songs are standouts from this LP and Broadway is one such example. Hunter thinks a great deal about Broadway and he considers it among the best slow songs he's ever written. The downside according to Ian is the lack of an effective hook and chorus. Although there are numerous rock life type of tunes in the Hunter oeuvre this song is similar except applied to aspirations of stage stardom. The words contrast the lights of Broadway with the darkness of the aspirant:

"But chances are you'll find out on Broadway
Who you really are."
Brilliant.

There is a live version also from 2005 in Norway which is unusual since songs from this LP rarely made it into a live set.

Broadway

(Ian Hunter)

Green lights on Broadway
All the magic seems to say
Come and ride with me baby you know
It's got to be the greatest show on Broadway
Out here on the streets they say
You can see your life in one day
I long I long I long I long I long to hear every single street singer
Oh what a mood that feeling brings
You can capture life in a jar
Chances are that you'll find out on Broadway Who you really are

Sitting in a lonely room
Staring through the evening gloom
She'll never make the grade on Broadway
She'll never spend exciting nights
Surrounded by a maze of lights
And stars that line the streets on Broadway

Broadway
When the neon lights are shining bright
She knows she's going to make it someday
Broadway
You can hear the music of the night
She knows that she will
Broadway
When the neon lights are shining bright
Oh I know she's going to make it some day
Broadway
You can hear the music of the night
I know that she will
I said
Broadway
Oh how I love you how I love you
Broadway
How I love you how I love you
Broadway
It's your show I know I know
But chances are you'll find out on Broadway
Who you really are

Review

After receiving (and turning down) several offers in 1976, Ian realised he wanted to be in a band again. After the less than commercial success of Alien Boy, he went in to the studios wanting to record fast songs again (having recorded Alien Boy never wanting to do a fast song again!). With Roy Thomas Baker producing (he had produced several Queen albums), this should have been a monster.

The result could almost be described heavy metal - it is certainly not a typical Ian Hunter album. The rockers are certainly there, but the production is too thin - everything is at the same level in the mix (up front!), with Ian's voice almost drowned out at times.

Released when punk was at its height, the album and subsequent tour received mixed reviews. Columbia in the States was more forthright - they refused to release it (although a few test pressings exist). Ian would soon part company from CBS/Columbia and Fred Heller (his manager), and soon disowned the album, describing it as "that horrible album" and "a mistake", and hasn't played any track from it in concert since.

Brainwashed, Ian Hunter, Shrunken Heads

The nugget of a rocker Brainwashed emerged on the LP taking a bulls-eye to branded materialism, herd thinking, and the proletarians watching reality television in a consumer society. In the vein of the previous release, Rant, it has an English feel to it and most of the release is in a similar politically-tinged mood. People are brainwashed by consumer interests, fall for repeated government phrases, and they ring up their ill-afforded credit cards, overly made up, "twisting my religion."

"Speak no evil, hear no evil
Say you never saw it"

In English, this means to ignore bad behavior by pretending not to see it and therefore the narrator can not help the brainwashed. It's original meaning, rooted in Confucianism, is to teach prudence and the importance of avoiding evil, typically depicted by three monkeys -- one covering its eyes, the next covering its ears, and the third its mouth because it is a pun on the Japanese word for monkey.

Review

This is Ian's first studio album in six years since 2001's Rant. Eagerly anticipated by fans, musically and lyrically it has much in common with its predecessor. Those familiar with Rant will immediately feel comfortable with this album. Whereas before he was lamenting what he sees as the decline of the land of his birth, this time he is commenting on his adopted homeland.

This reviewer always finds it takes a few listens to "get" an Ian Hunter album, and this is no exception. There appears to be little or no filler, and there's a healthy mix of strong, solid rockers and quieter, slower material. Much of the material has a familiar feel - a riff here, a bridge there, very much in the Ian Hunter style where he (perhaps subconciously) leans on his own earlier material.

There are some astonishingly good tracks on here. Words (Big Mouth) opens things up nicely where Ian apologises to a loved one for mouthing off the night before, while Ian yearns for a earlier, simpler world in When The World Was RoundBrainwashed is a great rocker, aimed squarely at the brand-name materialism society seems to be obsessed with today. Shrunken Heads is a great track, with a distinct Springsteen-ish touch to it - close your eyes and it's easy to imagine the E-Street Band accompanying Ian on this one.

In Soul Of America he rails against the current crop of leaders who don't compare to Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Franklin... at the same time as noting how corrupt the whole government machine has become ("feathering their nests while they're rallying the troops..."). How's Your House is a fun, piano-drenched rocker lamenting the lack of help for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Stretch (another guitar-led rocker) sees Ian taking aim at some of the ne'er-do-wells he grew up with, perhaps noting that things could easily have turned out so very differently.

It will be interesting to see how much of this material come across live (I suspect 'very well'). Initial copies of this album come with a 3-track bonus CD - for once the "limited edition" tag is accurate, as bonus-less versions are already in the shops. The tracks are as strong as on the main album (ie definitely not demo tracks). Your Eyes in particular would not have been out of place on the main album, while Wasted has more than a touch of Ian's own God (Take One) about it. At about 50 minutes the album is the right length and the production is very clean.

Overall, a good album that rewards repeated listening. Initially I thought "maybe a notch or two down on his very best" but you know, I'm gonna change my mind. The more I listen to this album the more it grows on me. I'm now firmly convinced this is one of his very best, up there with Alien Boy and Schizophrenic. Now where's that repeat button on the CD player...
