Following In Your Footsteps (Hunter/Ronson), Ian Hunter, YUI Orta, Bag of Tricks, Vol. 3

Excerpt:

Following In Your Footsteps is about heredity, genetics, and not wanting to be like your father. Two key lines are:

You never got what you wanted
So I never got what I need

If the father is deficient then the child will not get what they need. The child has to follow in the footsteps of what they know. The "someone" is the father knowing that:

Someone must have given me anger,
someone must have given me hate
Or why would I stand here shakin',
when there's so many chances to take

With all these drawbacks the child is inhibited while there are so many things to do and possibilities in life. The genes can hold you back. The frustration that Hunter had with his father are explored in Ships and No Hard Feelings. Ian realizes that his father had a really difficult life with war and the Great Depression. Then, his father got stuck in a job as a cop. Hunter reconciled with his father but the song relates how important he was as he was growing up in his father's footsteps and how fatherhood is critical.

The track was released on YUI Orta but there are two live versions as well one on BBC Live in Concert and another on Bag of Tricks Vol. 3 with just Steve Holley on drums and James Mastro on guitar.

Following In Your Footsteps

(Ian Hunter/Mick Ronson)

Some folk leave courage, some folk leave you hope
Why am I out here hangin'
like a fool at the end o' my rope
Some folk leave you wisdom,
some folk leave you signs
You can never be sure what went on before
Life is just a matter of time
Picture of you, clouding my view

I'm following in your footsteps,
tryin' to make some sense of it all
Maybe it's a sign of weakness,
but that's where my footsteps fall
I'm following in your footsteps,
tryin' to hang on to your dreams
You never got what you wanted
So I never got what I need
I'm following in your footsteps,
'cos that's where the footsteps lead
Someone must have given me anger,
someone must have given me hate
Or why would I stand here shakin',
when there's so many chances to take
Pictures of you,
climb into view
I'm following in your footsteps,
tryin' to make some sense of it all
Maybe it's a sign of weakness,
but that's where my footsteps fall
I'm following in your footsteps,
watchin' my children grow
They're following in my footsteps
Takin' it on the road
We're following in your footsteps
'cos that's where the footsteps go
We're following in your footsteps, yeah
'cos that's where your footsteps go

Review

Ian teamed up with his old mate Mick Ronson once again to record this album in the middle of 1989. Ian and Mick had toured the USA and Europe in late 1988/early 1989, before the album was even recorded, and the result is a highly polished album - one of their best.

Highlights include the Stonsey Women's Intuition (if only Mick 'n' Keef were still this good!), the full-tilt rocker How Much More Can I TakeBig Time (Ian borrows his own riff from Once Bitten...), Tell It Like It Is (Mick borrowing the Get It On riff) and Mick's guitar showcase Sweet Dreamer which is breathtaking beautiful.

When the album was released, they toured the USA and Europe again to promote it. Intended in some ways as a comeback album for both men, the record company did little to promote it themselves, and it didn't sell in great numbers. They were dropped by the record company, and all plans for a follow-up were put on hold when Mick Ronson was diagnosed with liver cancer.

Unavailable for many years, this CD has finally been reissued on the Lemon label (a planned reissue on NMC having fallen through when NMC went bust). This reissue includes a couple of Ronno bonus tracks from 1971 - great for the completist but somewhat at odds with the rest of the album. The insert includes the lyrics from the original CD, but the sleeve notes are appallingly inaccurate - a shame really that Campbell Devine's notes for the aborted NMC release weren't used.

In 1995, Windsong issued an official release of their 15-Feb-89 concert, which had been recorded by the BBC for radio broadcast. This live album has since been reissued on Strange Fruit.

As is normal these days, there was material left over in the vaults, some of which is circulating amongst fans. This includes (Give Me Back My) Wings, which was demoed but never recorded, Ill Wind (now available on the Once Bitten Twice Shycompilation), More To Love Than Meets The Eye and Look Before You Leap, which IMO would have been a great single and features some beautiful guitar work from Mick Ronson

The album title is derived from "Why you... I ought to...", a phrase popularised by The Three Stooges.

Analysis of the reissued CD shows some compression being used; this has boosted overall loudness slightly (by some 2.2dB) without any noticeable affect on sound quality.

Flowers, Ian Hunter, Man Overboard.

Excerpt:

Ian says Flowers revolves around the line that came first: `Sometimes flowers aren't enough.' It hearkens back to the Vietnam era and that war is too stupid for words.

This is one of the most ardent anti-war songs in the Hunter catalog and it is a heartfelt plea for peace: flowers are not enough. The elites who get us into wars are out of touch and this topic is similar to Death 'n Glory Boys lamenting the stupidity of the Falklands War. The flowers that people traditionally place at funerals is not enough to make up for the loss of life. He says to give it up and not fall victim to the propaganda that warfare is necessary. In the chorus he pleads:

Death, starvation, exploitation, helpless, homeless, furious
Mass confusion, disillusion,
Sometimes flowers ain't enough
I can't see God, the trees are in the way
I can't see hope, can't find love
Every man killed is an insult to any faith
Sometimes flowers ain't enough

It's a powerful statement and well-done musically to support the strong lyrics accompanying the song.

The track was released on Man Overboard but there is also a version on Live in the UK 2010.

Flowers

(Ian Hunter)

Danger lurks in every alleyway, top 2 percent out of touch
No one learns from the lessons of history
Sometimes flowers ain't enough

They fill your heart with ancient mystery
No one knows who to trust
It's too late when you discover that sometimes flowers ain't enough

Chorus:
Give it up, give it up
Give it up, give it up
Give it up, give it up
Why don't you give it up
Sometimes flowers ain't enough

Hunger, anger, propoganda, ain't it time we all grew up?
We all got dreams but nobody's listening
Sometimes flowers ain't enough

Chorus

Death, starvation, exploitation, helpless, homeless, furious
Mass confusion, disillusion,
Sometimes flowers ain't enough
I can't see God, the trees are in the way
I can't see hope, can't find love
Every man killed is an insult to any faith
Sometimes flowers ain't enough

Chorus

Give it up, give it up
Give it up, give it up
We all sing "Thanks for the memories"
Sometimes flowers ain't enough

Review

After two albums that were somewhat political in nature (2001's Rant and 2007's Shrunken Heads), 2009 find Ian in a more mellow frame of mind. After a long and successful career he has time to look back on his life and say "Yeah... I've no complaints..."

The album opens strongly with The Great Escape, which tells of the singer's narrow escape after a "lack of respect" for a local thug. Indeed, several songs seem to be telling tales of the rougher side of life, such as the title track which informs us "They say crime doesn't pay, well take a walk down my way..."

Ian doesn't forget his working-class roots either, with the delightful Girl From The Office, which is reminiscent of the Kinks at their best and has a very English feel to it, and tells the story of a factory-floor romance. As always with Ian's songs of this nature, it has a happy ending (he gets the girl).

Ballads have always been a strong point with Ian, and these are prominent especially on the second half of the album. Not all work, however, with These Feelings being a particular weakness.

More up-tempo songs are on the first half of the album. I hesitate to say "rockers", as medium-pace is about the best we get these days (I did say Ian is more mellow these days) and guitars, although present, are rarely high in the mix any more. Those expecting another Just Another Night or Cleveland Rocks should perhaps look elsewhere. That was then and this is now... That said, Arms And Legs is a strong guitar-led song that will really work well in a live setting, as is the next track Up And Running.

Ian hopes to tour with the album both in the USA and UK, so we will wait and see how the songs work in a live setting. Reports from the two gig so far (at the time of writing, end July '09) are positive. As for where this album fits in Ian's extensive back catalogue time only will tell. It is more immediately likeable than its predecessor (sometimes it takes a few plays to "get" an Ian Hunter album, but I liked this straight away), but ulimately I feel it may end up a notch or two down from his very best.

Fingers Crossed, Ian Hunter, Fingers Crossed

Fingers Crossed is one of those songs hailed by the likes of Classic Rock when they noted that Hunter has gotten stronger in the latter third of his career. The stranger in a strange land here is the colorful historical tale of being pressed-ganged into naval service as in the 1750s by "nefarious rogues." The tear-jerking chorus is balance by the dramatic "Hang me high" climatic refrain. The title track was not inspired by a specific book but woke up with the opening line "I was pressed into service through no fault of my own" and the song emerged. It is historically accurate that sailors could return to England and they would either knight you or hang you as a pirate; for example, consider the life of one of the most remarkable and notable figures of the Elizabethan era such as Sir Walter Raleigh.

The singer is a pawn in the song but he is not about to complain and has his fingers crossed for good luck. He is a pirate or privateer, from the land of the lost. As a fighter on the South China Seas he is about to be hung so fire away as he had his fingers crossed. Hunter has so many historical allusions running through his songs and here is a consistent theme of being an outsider but in this setting as an outlaw pirate about to be hung.

Fingers Crossed

(Ian Hunter)

I was pressed into service through no fault of my own
I was dragged from the gutter by nefarious rogues
I don't like to dwell upon what happened to me
From the land of the living to the land of the lost
Just a pawn in the system, (woh-oh) got my fingers crossed

I've seen skulls, I've seen crossbones
As near as I can see you
I felt the cold cloak of terror, the fog 'n' grog got us through
Pirate or privateer
I am both am I not, in a land unforgiving from the land of the lost
With my fate in the balance, (woh-oh) and my fingers crossed

Well..
Hang me high, hang me high, boys
hang me high, hang me high, boys
Hang me high, hang me high, boys
hang me high, hang me high, boys

I have danced with the elements on the South China seas
I've seen gold, I've seen silver, the fruits of our victories
Guilty or innocent, I ask this because, on the steps of the scaffold am I now to be lost
So I make my confession, (woh-oh) with my fingers crossed

Hang me high, hang me high, boys
hang me high, hang me high, boys
Hang me high, hang me high, boys,
hang me high, hang me high, boys

Fire away, fire away, boys
fire away, fire away, boys
Fire away, fire away, boys
fire away, fire away
So I make my confession, (oh-oh) with my fingers crossed

Review

Ian's 2016 album Fingers Crossed shows that he's as sharp an observer and incisive commentator as ever. The run of form that started with 2001's Rant shows no sign of abating, with this album being up there with his very best.

Ian hasn't been this good since the 70's, with killer album after killer album. No, I'm not an "I praise everything" type of reviewer - this is the honest truth. At 77 years of age (oh, yes!) Ian shows no sign of slowing down.

Dandy is the standout track, his homage to David Bowie who passed away back in January 2016. See how many Bowie tracks he manages to weave into the lyrics! Clever, very clever.

Mid-tempo rockers such as White HouseBow Street Runners and Stranded In Reality sit alongside slower, more thoughtful songs such as Morpheus and the title track Fingers Crossed.

Ian has always had his feet planted firmly in reality, as on You Can't Live In The Past he notes "You can never go back, those days are gone". On the closing track, the rockabilly Long Time he offers advice to younger wannabes "Be careful what you wish for" as he notes "Take a chance on destiny, you'll never know what you find".

Sheers class. And as essential as ever.

FBI (Gormley), Ian Hunter, Welcome to the Club, Wait

FBI is a showcase for Mick Ronson and opened the Hunter Ronson concerts from 1979-1980. It was a 1961 hit for the Shadows actually written by the band but due to complicated publishing contracts it was credited to their manager Peter Gormley. Ian didn't particularly care for the Shadows (he "always took the piss out of him [Ronson] for at every opportunity") but Ronno really liked them, made the tune his own, and he added blistering solos to the original and mixed it up a bit.

Officially the Welcome to the Club version is the actual release but several live versions later became available including two earlier releases before the November 1979 Welcome version. The song opened Hunter Ronson shows through the 1980 appearances.

Also recorded at My Father's Place, Roslyn NY 12th June 1979 on Collateral Damage.

Ian Hunter On Track for Sonicbond Publishing, TheDoctorOfDigital@pm.me

Ian's 1979 Schizophrenic album sold much better than anyone had expected, and Chrysalis were keen to keep the momentum going with another album. Because he doesn't write on the road, Ian didn't have the material together, so a 2-LP live set (recorded towards the end of the 1979 USA tour) was put out instead. It basically comprised three sides live and one side of new material live in the studio.

The 2-CD set offers excellent packaging and excellent sound quality, albeit with different artwork (the original having been lost). The CD includes the rare UK single b-sides One Of The Boys (live) and Once Bitten Twice Shy/Bastard/Cleveland Rocks (live medley), and the previously-unreleased The Golden Age of Rock 'n' Roll (live) and When the Daylight Comes (live).

Fatally Flawed, Ian Hunter, When I'm President.

Fatally Flawed was alternately restrained, then explosive, and driven by distorted and soulful guitar, while acidic lyrics assaulted the senses with tales of addictive personalities and departed pop stars such as Whitney Houston and Amy Whitehouse. In fact, Hunter appeared alongside Amy in 2004, on Jools Holland's BBC TV show.

The deeply reflective Ian has said this is about the scales of life which is an image first depicted in the 2nd Century Christian book the Testament of Abraham. With only two chords the trick is to be profound lyrically about addictive personalities which Hunter pulls off and is similar to how blues songs are constructed: simple but deep. Ian also noted how well Mark Bosch played on this track which helps contribute to making this lyrically and musically one of Ian's best songs ever.

There are clever insights since the addictive flaws hide in a sacred heart biding its time until emerging. And, these flaws hide anywhere both in your head or a more physically obvious place such as your "between your thighs." These personalities don't know when the flaws will hit them as a twist in their DNA. The flaws can cut you and they never fade away. This is one of the deepest and most profound of Hunter tracks about the doctrine of humanity, who we are, sin, and the elusiveness of salvation.

The weighing of souls (Ancient Greekpsychostasia)[1] is a religious motif in which a person's life is assessed by weighing their soul (or some other part of them) immediately before or after death in order to judge their fate.[2]This motif is most commonly seen in medieval Christianity.[3] The first known depiction of literal weighing of souls in Christianity is from the 2nd century Testament of Abraham.[10]

Fatally Flawed

(Ian Hunter)

The flaw was always in your sacred heart
Biding its time till you played the wrong card
Ain't no hurry - it can wait
To take you out on a last date

There's so many places that a flaw can hide
In the back of your head or in between your thighs
And you don't know where
And you don't know when
But sooner or later they're gonna rise again

No more innocence, no more guilt
No more crying over that milk you spilt
Scales of justice out of whack
Take a look at that train wreck - purrin' like a Cadillac

You're clutching at straws - what can the matter be - you're fatally flawed

When you've exhausted every avenue
And no one knows what else they can do
There must've been a twist in your DNA
It's those fatal flaws, they never fade away
Oooo they never fade away
Oooo they don't fade away
Oooo they don't fade away
Oooo they don't fade away

Fatal flaws like to breed inside addictive personalities
By her bed she opens up the drawer
And there's bottles full of them fatal flaws

Razor sharp, babe, razor sharp
They can turn your lights out baby
Leave you in the dark,
They can make you crazy
They can make you mean
They got all the power
They cut like guillotines

'N there ain't no cure - what can the matter be, it's those fatal flaws
Oooo they don't fade away
Oooo they never leave you alone
Oooo those fatal flaws
Oooo gonna carry you home

Oooo they never fade away
Oooo they don't fade away
Oooo they never fade away
Oooo they never fade away

You lost your makeup, you were scramblin' on the floor
Lookin' for somethin' you ain't got any more

Review

Now this is more like it. Ian's new album is a welcome return to form. The good news is this album is chock full of rockers. The bad news is... well, there isn't any. In the fullness of time this album could well turn out to be his best in many years.

The run of good albums that started with Rant and continued with Shrunken Heads continues here. Guitars are to the full, with strong solos from both James Mastro and Mark Bosch. Ian's singing is strong without ever sounding strained and the rhythm section is as tight as a duck's whatsit.

What helps of course is that the songs are top-notch. Comfortable (Flyin' Scotsman) sets the tone, being a powerful full-paced rocker with guitars and subtle use of saxes. The title track is also strong, a mid-paced rocker with a repeated keyboard refrain reminiscent of The Who's Won't Get Fooled Again.

What For is another rocker with strong guitars and piano reminiscent of early Mott The Hoople. Ian hasn't rocked like this for years, and it sounds like he's having fun. Black Tears is slower but powerful and moody with a guitar solo that reminds me of the much-missed Mick Ronson. Saint is another up-tempo rocker, this time it reminds me at times of Twisted SteelWild Bunch meanwhile is a rocker that reminds me of The Faces.

There are so many good songs on this album it is hard to pick out highlights. What's interesting is that this album is credited to Ian Hunter And The Rant Band. This is much more of a band album than most of Ian's recent albums, and it is much the better for it.

What more can I say? It's brilliant... 'nuff said,
