All The Young Dudes, Ian Hunter, Welcome to the Club, Ian Hunter & The Rant Band Live in the UK 2010, Strings Attached

The most well-known of all Mott The Hoople songs All The Young Dudes and closely associated with Ian is this song. Originally released as a Mott song it has continued to be a staple of Hunter's live shows from 1979-2010. The widely circulated story is that Mott broke up and Pete "Overend" Watts rang him up to see if David Bowie needed a bass player. Instead, David said he was a fan and had material for Mott thus first Overend and then the whole band went to his flat to hear songs. The band needed a killer song to break into the charts and Ian said he knew it was hit the first time he heard it; this effort was their last grasp at commercial success and it did break them into the charts. The ending rap was uncredited to Ian from a stage prank that he pulled on stage wherein he would invite someone from the audience to come forward or pour beer over them. Nonetheless, he did not get songwriting credit as it was originally Bowie's song. Hunter's pop instincts were keen though and he turned down David's first offering of Suffragette City and the band readily embraced All The Young Dudes as a result.

Ian consistently plays the song live and often it is the final song of the night to close the shows. Otherwise, there are numerous live versions of the song. Starting with his collaboration with Mick Ronson. Ian played the song, with Rick Derringer in 1981, the Freddy Mercury Tribute Concert in 1992, the Mick Ronson Memorial Concert in 1994, Def Leppard in 1996, Ringo Starr in 2001, the orchestral version in 2002, and finally with the Rant Band in 2010. At the latter version Hunter ends by saying `I suppose I've done just about as much as a man can do' which came from a story honoring Jerry Lee "The Killer" Lewis as he said the same thing one time Ian heard him live at a gig.

Also recorded at the Park West, Chicago IL 22nd June 1979 on Collateral Damage.

There is also a version from Rick Derringer & Friends.

All The Young Dudes

(David Bowie)

Well Billy rapped all night about his suicide
How he kick it in the head when he was twenty-five
Speed jive don't want to stay alive
When you're twenty-five
And Wendy's stealing clothes from Marks and Sparks
And Freedy's got spots from ripping off the stars from his face
Funky little boat race
Television man is crazy saying we're juvenile deliquent wrecks
Oh man I need TV when I got T Rex
Oh brother you guessed
I'm a dude dad
All the young dudes (Hey dudes)
Carry the news (Where are ya)
Boogaloo dudes (Stand up Come on)
Carry the news
All the young dudes (I want to hear you)
Carry the news (I want to see you)
Boogaloo dudes (And I want to talk to you all of you)
Carry the news
Now Lucy looks sweet cause he dresses like a queen
But he can kick like a mule it's a real mean team
But we can love oh yes we can love
And my brother's back at home with his Beatles and his Stones
We never got it off on that revolution stuff
What a drag too many snags
Now I've drunk a lot of wine and I'm feeling fine
Got to race some cat to bed
Oh is there concrete all around
Or is it in my head
Yeah
I'm a dude dad
All the young dudes (Hey dudes)
Carry the news (Where are ya)
Boogaloo dudes (Stand up)
Carry the news
All the young dudes (I want to hear ya)
Carry the news (I want to see you)
Boogaloo dudes (And I want to relate to you)
Carry the news
All the young dudes (What dudes)
Carry the news (Let's hear the news come on)
Boogaloo dudes (I want to kick you)
Carry the news
All the young dudes (Hey you there with the glasses)
Carry the news (I want you)
Boogaloo dudes (I want you at the front)
Carry the news (Now you all his friends)
All the young dudes (Now you bring him down cause I want him)
Carry the news Boogaloo dudes (I want him right here bring him come on)
Carry the news (Bring him here you go)
All the young dudes (I've wanted to do this for years)
Carry the news (There you go)
Boogaloo dudes (How do you feel)
Carry the news

All The Way From Memphis, Ian Hunter, Welcome to the Club, Strings Attached, Truth

All The Way From Memphis is one of Ian's most well-known tunes from both the studio release and his live concerts. It is a homage to rock 'n' roll roots from Memphis and in the piano intro especially to The Killer, Jerry Lee Lewis. Live Ian has said live that the original rock and roller Jerry Lee Lewis told him there is only one thing to do when the music is low; you have to turn the sound up again! How appropriate it is that Sun Records signed Ian with Defiance Part 1 as he also recorded Ghosts as a tribute to early rock 'n' roll and the city of Memphis.

The song is mostly true and based on the 1972 Mott The Hoople concert in Memphis. This was Ian's famous invasion of Graceland that he relates in Diary of a Rock 'n' Roll Star. The foray didn't prove entirely successful but Ian got the song out of the experience.

Hunter was not happy with the Memphis mix from Mott so he was happy to do it again and perform live as well. Understandably, Ian objected to the Mott version as a single but the CBS UK Head Dick Asher put it out as soon as Hunter's back was turned on a US tour. It went Top Ten. Ian says he can be a poor judge of his own work.

The track was originally a Mott The Hoople song but Ian has consistently performed it live in concert officially from 1979-2004. It has become a staple of his live act as he moves to piano while playing it live. The studio version relates "she rides the train to Oreoles" (or Oriole) but when Luther Grosvenor (aka, Ariel Bender) played in the band Ian substitutes "Ariel" for Oreoles," otherwise he sings the original version. The Liverpool docks and the Oreoles were poetic license. Some of the lyrics are true and some fictionalized. Over the years, Hunter also changes the politically incorrect "spade," a mildly derogative word for a black male, to the neutral word dude.

More importantly, the song is a paean to the aspirations and the desperation of rockers seeking success. Hunter references the Beatles, "From the Liverpool docks to the Hollywood Bowl," noting their origin and their famous Bowl appearance, insightfully identifying a rocker's internal thoughts of pursuing success at any cost,  "As your name gets hot so your heart grows cold. 'N you gotta stay young man, you can never be old." Age is something Ian understands first hand since early in his career he struggled to be in the band Mott The Hoople at the old age, at least for rock, at 29 years old. Hunter also lamented the coldness of the music business most famously in his Diary of a Rock 'n' Roll Star. He also consistently identified the limitation of stardom in Diary and elsewhere as in his lyric: "'N you look like a star but you're really out on parole!" As Hunter has struggled for recognition he popped the bubble off the rock lifestyle since it was not all that it was cracked up to be. You may be in a band, on tour, and recording, but you are not making any money. More than anyone else in the history of popular music Ian has honestly revealed what the rock lifestyle is really like.

Kjetil Bjerkestrand weirdly but fascinatingly reinterpreted the song for the Strings Attached project.

Also recorded at the Park West, Chicago IL 22nd June 1979 on Collateral Damage.

All The Way From Memphis

(Ian Hunter)

Forgot my six-string razor - hit the sky
Half way to Memphis 'fore I realised
Well I rang the information - my axe was cold
They said she rides the train to Oreoles (or, Oriole)

Now its a mighty long way down the dusty trail
And the sun burns hot on the cold steel rails
'N I look like a bum 'n I crawl like a snail
All the way from Memphis

Well I got to Oreoles y'know - it took a month
And there was my guitar, electric junk.
Some spade said "Rock'n'rollers, you're all the same.
Man that's your instrument." I felt so ashamed.

Now its a mighty long way down rock'n'roll
Through the Bradford Cities and the Oreoles
'N you look like a star but you're still on the dole
All the way from Memphis

Yeah it's a mighty long way down rock'n'roll From the Liverpool docks to the Hollywood Bowl
'N you climb up the mountains 'n you fall down the holes
All the way from Memphis

Yeah its a mighty long way down rock'n'roll
As your name gets hot so your heart grows cold
'N you gotta stay young man, you can never be old
All the way from Memphis

Yeah its a mighty long way down rock'n'roll
Through the Bradford Cities and the Oreoles
'N you look like a star but you're really out on parole!
All the way from Memphis

All Of The Good Ones Are Taken, Ian Hunter, All of the Good Ones Are Taken LP

One of the most attractive new songs All Of The Good Ones Are Taken featured an infectious chorus and heartfelt sax from Clarence "The Big Man" Clemons of the E Street Band. Similar to Springsteen's work this track is one of several in the Hunter oeuvre that has emerged substantially different in more than one version: in this case, a fast and a slow version. The slow version was the first and Ian wanted it for the album but CBS objected to its release as a single. The fast version was the record company's idea. It was written quickly but the original was lost and Ian couldn't get the groove for the song back. His wife warned him not to do the fast version and she is correct the slow version makes it. Ian thinks that he missed out on a hit with the song. It very well could have been a smash since its a great track.

Similar to the dilemma with Just Another Night and The Other Side of Life on You're Never Alone with a Schizophrenic ideas were bandied about whether to do the songs fast or slow. On the studio album the lively, up-tempo version began as the first track and the slow version closed out the effort.

The feeling is bittersweet--lost love--the feeling at the end of a romance, that's it.

Both versions are available on the All Of The Good Ones Are Taken LP. The song was originally an album track and a single A-side. There is also a live version from the Strings Attached work which Hunter feels is the best version of the song.

Furthermore, we have the treat of a clever fully produced music video for the effort as well. The video is a spoof on the actor Dudley Moore in 1981's comedy Arthur. Most of Ian's work did not benefit from much in the way of production and marketing but this song received stellar treatment. The promo video was a superb marketing tool of the time converting Hollywood visuals into a three-minute rock expression. The 385-pound late Captain Haggerty from his School for Dogs and television's Mr. Clean helped Ian through the shoot with his encouragement. During the Central Park boat scene the boast was sinking under the Captain's weight covering their feet in water and water logging the cassette needed for the lip synching. Hunter was soaked for the limousine scene and the diner shot required 4 am timing so they could open up for business that morning. Ian says he's not sure how good it was but it is a bit of a lost classic and a proper marketing tool of the day. In 1984 the clip was nominated at the first-ever MTV Video Music Awards.

All Of The Good Ones Are Taken

(Ian Hunter)

Girl-things ain't been goin' too good for me
Girl-I'm living in the middle of a mystery
You're the only one that can turn me on

'N' now that you're gone I said
Girl-I'm livin' in the middle of your memory
Girl-You're still the figure in my favorite fantasy

I know you know
That's the way it goes
And still my love grows-I said

All o' the good, all o' the good ones are taken
All o' the good, all o' the good ones are taken

I'm hangin' around with my head in the air
Watchin' the lovers go by
I had a lover-but she never cared
All you could say was goodbye

Maybe I was mistaken
Maybe I got it wrong

But all of the good ones are taken from now on
'N' girl-I'm livin' in the middle of a broken dream
I said girl-all this fallin' in love ain't like it seems

Out in the rain-can't you feel my pain
Again 'n' again 'n' again 'n' again 'n' again

All of the good, all o' the good ones are taken
Maybe I was mistaken-maybe I got it wrong
But all of the good ones are taken in my song

A Little Star, Ian Hunter, uncompleted song, All American Alien Boy

This is an uncompleted song that fell by the wayside during the All American Alien Boy sessions (Devine, Vol. Two, p. 73), this song is not to be confused with The Ballad of Little Star from Overnight Angels.

All is Forgiven, Ian Hunter, demo, Once Bitten Twice Shy and on Tilting The Mirror - Rarities (box set only)

All is Forgiven is a rare demo that was issued on the compilation Once Bitten Twice Shy and on Tilting The Mirror - Rarities (box set only). As a demo it was recorded in Ian's home studio and although not a standard release what it does demonstrate is the diversity of styles Ian can produce. One interesting note is an echo of the first line in the Willard Manus novel that gave Mott The Hoople their name: "Mott The Hoople was two miles from heaven." Some of the most unusual and basic demos provide the rawest songs that Hunter recorded and this song is no exception.

Who is it about? Hunter's mum! Her name was Freda Patterson and here is one about family life but not Ian's father as he recorded several songs about him.

I stood on a mountain
And I looked down the freeway
And saw you in the distance
Fading away.

It's so sad that you're leaving
I can't stop believing
The rest of my life
Won't be the same.

All is forgiven
All is forgiven
Throw it away
When your heart lies
Only three miles from Heaven
All is forgiven.

I stood in the white room
And I cried like a baby
Cut myself shaving
A lock of your hair.

It's as white as a snowflake
Soft as a feather
Dancing on air
I know that you're there.

All is forgiven
All is forgiven
Put it away
When your heart lies
Three miles from Heaven
All is forgiven.

When your heart lies
Three miles from Heaven
All is forgiven
Yes it is.

All American Alien Boy, Ian Hunter

All American Alien Boy had interesting origins and although Ronson was not fated to be on Hunter's LP he had a hand in the song. Bobby Colomby invited Mick and Ian to meet Jaco Pastorius, bass player extraordinaire and the quartet's jam was captured on It Never Happened with a Super 8 cine film of their initial effort.

The seven-minute tour de force was a lyrical discourse perfectly integrating jazz-laden brass, an inspired bass interlude from Jaco, blues, and a bit of funk with Weems' guitar and Sanborn's gutsy sax. Artfully sprinkled with both British and American allusions the collage creatively addressed the trans-Atlantic cultural voyage of Hunter.

This is one of Ian's most well known tracks, available in numerous versions, and is the title track to the LP of the same name. In its first release it was an album track although another version is a single release and the two are distinguished by length: ranging from 3:52-7:07. The musicians, most notably for this song Jaco Pastorius on bass, did it Hunter's way on the album, but for the single it was performed the musicians way.

The single version is found on compilations GoldOnce Bitten - the CBS CollectionOnce Bitten Twice Shy and The Singles Collection 1975-83, and on Tilting The Mirror - Rarities (box set only). Moreover, there is a separate "early single version" (distinguished by the line "I remember all the good times me 'n The Hoople enjoyed" rather than "...me 'n Miller enjoyed"). Finally, there is a live version as recorded at the Nidaros Blues Festival, Trondheim, Norway and released on Bag Of Tricks (Vol 3) (box set only).

Hunter has lamented that the album did not do well commercially which is true and realistically it did harm his commercial career; however, the lyrics and music anticipates some of his later themes as he expanded upon in his more recent works. One of Ian's common themes is as an outsider which is explored in this song as a Britisher living in and trying to understand his newly adopted American culture at the time. It features numerous political issues and pop culture references.

The lyrics of the song describe an outsider's view of America in the 1970s. Ian found America "tacky" as his first impression as compared to Britain. He makes a reference to John Lennon since the ex-Beatle had beat a retreat to America as well. Ian takes on the commercialism of television and references to prices of hamburgers, televisions, hotdogs and pizzas. A political point Hunter makes occasionally is to guns as he does so here with a point about Saturday Night Specials. The phrase is a colloquial term in the United States for inexpensive, compact, and small-caliber handguns. Mary Tyler Moore was one of important television stars then starring in The Mary Tyler Moore Show (1970–1977), which helped define a new vision of American womanhood and he closed out the song by reciting a rap-like list of Native American chiefs which he relates took a long time.

One of the most striking political lines is in the song: "Don't want to vote for the left wing - don't want to vote for the right I gotta have both-to make me fly."

Nonetheless, references to guns pop up in Hunter's live recasting of Now Is the Time and Ian's appreciation of Native American history is revisited in Ta Shunka Witco (Crazy Horse).

All American Alien Boy
I packed my bags - in the land of rags
'Cause I don't believe in them dimmo drags
Don't want to vote for the left wing - don't want to vote for the right
I gotta have both-to make me fly

Just a whitey from Blighty - heading out west
Got my little green card an' my bulletproof vest
Goin' to old tube city - where the buzz is the best
On down the line (down the line) down the line (down the line)

Well I was born (on the line) an' I was raised (on the line)
I was schooled (on the line) an' I was fazed (on the line)
An' I was used (on the line) an' I was dazed (on the line)
Just had to split (off the line) 'cause I was crazed (off the line)

An' I remember all the good times - me 'n Miller enjoyed
Up and down the M1 in some luminous yo-yo toy
But the future has to change - and to change I've got to destroy
Oh look out Lennon here I come - land ahoy-hoy-hoy

All American Alien Boy All American Alien Boy
Don't look down put your feet on the ground don't drown in the big aquarium
Don't walk slow - put on a big show - shove your meat down vegetarians
Don't get slugged, get mugged, get bugged, or they'll sling you in the jug
Shove you under some rug, give you some drug - pull out the plug and then...

And they're telling me this hamburger's cheaper than the other
An' this television's cheaper than the other
And they're selling me hotdogs cheaper than the other
An' these pizzas cheaper than the other
And I don't understand all this - I'm just an All American Alien Boy

An' they're telling me rifles are shot in Connecticut
They're telling me pistols are shot in Westchester
You can get a Saturday Night Special on Flatbush, on the Bowery, or the Bronx

Or on 42nd Street - And I don't understand all this - being an All American Alien Boy
I've got sodium nitrate rotting in my guts
My head's full of ulcers I got lungs full of butts
My heart wants a transplant - it thinks that I'm nuts
My logic won't open - my eyes won't shut
An' I'm beginning to dig all this - being an All American Alien Boy

And your women are always right (alright)
They always know so much more
'Cause the women came from heaven
An' the men came outta some store
An' they don't know who they are and they don't know what they're for

I'm an All American Alien Boy - look out Mary Tyler Moore
All American Alien Boy

Ten Bears, Two Bears, Standing Bear, Plenty Bear,
Old Bear, Brave Bear, Hollow Horn Bear
Silver Knife, Spotted Tail, Yellow Hand, Red Cloud,
