I Don't Know What You Want (Ian Hunter/Jesse Hunter Patterson), When I'm President

Excerpt:

I Don't Know What You Want is a song about the generational divide. With two of his three children having musical talent here is one of the only collaborations he has actually had with them in the studio. On this track his son Jesse gets a songwriting credit and a lead vocal and this is unusual during Hunter's output. The song started out as a jam in his basement but his son Jesse came in and did the vocal in one take. Ian thinks highly of his son's voice, guitar, and bass talents as a younger version of himself with grit in his voice.

A common issue between generations is not understanding each other and the lyrics nail the difficulties between father and son. In some ways this is similar to Ships and No Hard Feelings where Ian was addressing his relationship and frustration with his father. On stage at the Bell House in Brooklyn Ian noted Jesse came home with a tattoo that he was not thrilled with but reacted with a sentiment along these lines essentially, I don't get it but what can I say? Both father and son care for each other but that emotion is difficult to communicate when the generations are so different.

Now this is more like it. Ian's new album is a welcome return to form. The good news is this album is chock full of rockers. The bad news is... well, there isn't any. In the fullness of time this album could well turn out to be his best in many years.

The run of good albums that started with Rant and continued with Shrunken Heads continues here. Guitars are to the full, with strong solos from both James Mastro and Mark Bosch. Ian's singing is strong without ever sounding strained and the rhythm section is as tight as a duck's whatsit.

What helps of course is that the songs are top-notch. Comfortable (Flyin' Scotsman) sets the tone, being a powerful full-paced rocker with guitars and subtle use of saxes. The title track is also strong, a mid-paced rocker with a repeated keyboard refrain reminiscent of The Who's Won't Get Fooled Again.

What For is another rocker with strong guitars and piano reminiscent of early Mott The Hoople. Ian hasn't rocked like this for years, and it sounds like he's having fun. Black Tears is slower but powerful and moody with a guitar solo that reminds me of the much-missed Mick Ronson. Saint is another up-tempo rocker, this time it reminds me at times of Twisted Steel. Wild Bunch meanwhile is a rocker that reminds me of The Faces.

There are so many good songs on this album it is hard to pick out highlights. What's interesting is that this album is credited to Ian Hunter And The Rant Band. This is much more of a band album than most of Ian's recent albums, and it is much the better for it.

What more can I say? It's brilliant... 'nuff said,

I Believe In You, Ian Hunter, Originally released on the out takes CD Long Odds and Outtakes. From The Knees Of My Heart and on Tilting The Mirror - Rarities (box set only).

This song originated with the out takes on Long Odds and Outtakes and subsequent compilations. It can be heard as a simple love song and one of the experiments that didn't make it on the Short Back 'n' Sides release. The hook is in the chorus of "I believe" and seems like it could have been developed but never was in terms of a regular release.

Review

At the end of 1980 Ian returned to the studio to record the follow-up to Schizophrenic and Welcome To The Club. Mick had effectively stopped playing live earlier in the year, and Ian himself was unsure which (musical) direction to take. He got Mick Jones as producer, and on paper the fusion of Mott The Hoople with The Clash should have produced a phenomenal album.

I'll make no bones about it - I hate this album. The material is mixed, and the production (and all the sound effects Mick Jones added) IMO ruined the good songs on it. At the time Ian liked the album, with Mick using different production techniques in the studio. But today he hardly ever plays material from it, a sure sign that it ain't up there with the best.

The 2-CD set offers excellent packaging and excellent sound quality. The original album is on one CD, and a second CD ("Long Odds and Out-takes") containing alternate mixes and unreleased material from the Chrysalis era.

I Am What I Hated When I Was Young, Ian Hunter, Shrunken Heads.

There are those Hunter songs that come along and are tongue in cheek, humorous, or downright fun--Skeletons (In Your Closet)--and I Am What I Hated When I Was Young is one of the humorous about the aging process. With this playful, fun-filled country romp Ian nails the younger generation and contrasts his wise to the world perspective as he has aged. But, then the self-mocking banjo-inflected lyrics reverse the direction of the song with the idea that he has now aged and become what he despised as a youngster. It's a clever turnabout tongue in cheek screed. He managed to sneak in "nincompoop" to an anxiety-ridden lament.

The song started out as a poem as young people think that anyone over 35 is dead and older people think younger people are stupid. It's always been like this and always will be. Similar to Words (Big Mouth) this was written with a sense of humor.

Review

This is Ian's first studio album in six years since 2001's Rant. Eagerly anticipated by fans, musically and lyrically it has much in common with its predecessor. Those familiar with Rant will immediately feel comfortable with this album. Whereas before he was lamenting what he sees as the decline of the land of his birth, this time he is commenting on his adopted homeland.

This reviewer always finds it takes a few listens to "get" an Ian Hunter album, and this is no exception. There appears to be little or no filler, and there's a healthy mix of strong, solid rockers and quieter, slower material. Much of the material has a familiar feel - a riff here, a bridge there, very much in the Ian Hunter style where he (perhaps subconciously) leans on his own earlier material.

There are some astonishingly good tracks on here. Words (Big Mouth) opens things up nicely where Ian apologises to a loved one for mouthing off the night before, while Ian yearns for a earlier, simpler world in When The World Was Round. Brainwashed is a great rocker, aimed squarely at the brand-name materialism society seems to be obsessed with today. Shrunken Heads is a great track, with a distinct Springsteen-ish touch to it - close your eyes and it's easy to imagine the E-Street Band accompanying Ian on this one.

In Soul Of America he rails against the current crop of leaders who don't compare to Washington, Jefferson, Adams, Franklin... at the same time as noting how corrupt the whole government machine has become ("feathering their nests while they're rallying the troops..."). How's Your House is a fun, piano-drenched rocker lamenting the lack of help for the victims of Hurricane Katrina. Stretch (another guitar-led rocker) sees Ian taking aim at some of the ne'er-do-wells he grew up with, perhaps noting that things could easily have turned out so very differently.

It will be interesting to see how much of this material come across live (I suspect 'very well'). Initial copies of this album come with a 3-track bonus CD - for once the "limited edition" tag is accurate, as bonus-less versions are already in the shops. The tracks are as strong as on the main album (ie definitely not demo tracks). Your Eyes in particular would not have been out of place on the main album, while Wasted has more than a touch of Ian's own God (Take One) about it. At about 50 minutes the album is the right length and the production is very clean.

Overall, a good album that rewards repeated listening. Initially I thought "maybe a notch or two down on his very best" but you know, I'm gonna change my mind. The more I listen to this album the more it grows on me. I'm now firmly convinced this is one of his very best, up there with Alien Boy and Schizophrenic. Now where's that repeat button on the CD player...

I'm In Awe, Ian Hunter, Outtake from the Artful Dodger sessions, released on The Journey and (described as a 'Rant outtake') on Tilting The Mirror - Rarities (box set only).

There is some question as to when this song originated since the sources say it was an out take from both the Artful Dodger sessions and as a Rant out take. In any case, it is a light song that sounds unfinished but has a pleasant tune and calm and peaceful lyrics. There are song that fill Hunter's albums and some such as these don't fit in and are cut.

There have been Mott The Hoople compilations, and there have been Ian Hunter compilations. Some have been reasonable, some have been very good. Few have covered all angles (eg both the Island and CBS years, or Ian's entire solo career), and even fewer have covered both Mott and Ian. Here at last is a compilation that does just that - take tracks from (nearly) every album from the very beginning in 1969 right up to the present day (well OK, 2001 - Ian's last studio album).

It is impossible to do justice to 30 years worth of work on a single CD, even two but three CDs seems about right. It's impossible to pick out highlights - all of the tracks are good. There's also three previously-unissued tracks, just to keep the regular fans happy as well (let's face it, if there was no new stuff on here, we'd be complaining).

There's also a 36 page booklet with a good overview of Mott's and Ian's career, together with many colour photographs.

As a retrospective of Mott The Hoople and Ian Hunter, I don't think it can be bettered.

I Ain't No Angel, Ian Hunter, (Laing/Hunter/Ronson/Pappalardi), The Secret Sessions

This demo quality recording of I Ain't No Angel was one of the collaborations on The Secret Sessions with the Mountain band. In 1978 Corky Laing (of Mountain), acting on a suggestion from his record company, put a "supergroup" together featuring himself (drums/vocals), Ian Hunter (ex Mott The Hoople) on keyboards/vocals, Mick Ronson on guitar and Felix Peppalardi (Mountain) on bass. They started recording, but shortly after the record company lost interest and funding stopped. The sessions were completed at a different studio, but at first remained in the can - until finally released.

The CD opens strongly enough, with the superb Easy Money, but soon descends into ordinaryness. Although all the tracks are complete versions, they sound rushed or demo-like, with little standing out, apart from a brilliant, lengthy version of The Outsider, which of course Ian recorded for his Schizophrenic album.

The CD is filled out with two tracks from Corky's 1978 solo album, perhaps because originally once funding had stopped there wasn't the time or money to record a full album's worth of material.

In summary, a CD mainly of historical interest only. Ian Hunter completists will want it, ditto Corky Laing/Mountain fans, but I doubt if the casual fan would be persuaded to part with his cash.

Hymn For The Dudes was originally a Mott The Hoople song on Mott and written by Hunter and organist Verden Allen. This is Ian taking on the big subjects of life, God, king, Christians, superstars, and the price of stardom. Stardom means you are in the goldfish bowl and on stage all the time. The song seems most directed against rock gods who lose their sense of perspective and temporary importance. Of this song Hunter relates that lyrically he generally views things as a glass half empty. It was recorded at the Nidaros Blues Festival, Kongressal, Trondheim Norway 29th April 2005.

How's Your House, Ian Hunter, Shrunken Heads

Hunter does release songs with a sense of humor and How's Your House is one that is a fun filled piano and rollocking lament on behalf of the victims of Hurricane Katrina in 2005. The title came from the flood resident victims.
"If FEMA won't help me, I know the Good Book will" and an authentic touch is added with the regional phrasing of "ax" me instead of the more proper ask me while the house is being washed away. This is social satire and humor used effectively on behalf of the unfortunate people in New Orleans. Another interesting twist with the spoken line ending:
"I don't know maybe it needs a bridge or something."
The failures of levees and flood walls during Katrina are considered by experts to be the worst engineering disaster in the history of the United States. By August 31, 2005, 80% of New Orleans was flooded, with some parts under 15 feet (4.6 m) of water. In short, this is one of Ian's not directly political but socially aware songs done in a humorous and easy to digest fashion.
The song came quickly in only ten minutes and Hunter thought the Rant Band might not like it since it was only two chords and really only a poem for fun. The Ranters convinced him to record it.

How Much More Can I Take, Ian Hunter, YUI Orta

This snappy tune How Much More Can I Take is along the lines of the Beatles and with Hunter's relationship lyrics resulted in the Hunter Ronson teamwork in full-tilt rocking mode and a live version was also released in 1989 at the BBC. It's a powerful statement of waiting and wondering and most of us have been there at one time or another. It's the emptiness that you feel while waiting on love. The lyrics end with a rhetorical and emotional outpouring:

You fill my eyes 
But you don't fill the hunger 
How much more can I take

Hunter doesn't remember much about it other than he thinks it's too fast. Most of us can relate to the sentiment though when we wonder how much worse can things get? The protagonist is unable to tolerate love, rejects it, and then yearns for the unattainable and in some ways is somewhat reminiscent of Arms and Legs.

Review

Ian teamed up with his old mate Mick Ronson once again to record this album in the middle of 1989. Ian and Mick had toured the USA and Europe in late 1988/early 1989, before the album was even recorded, and the result is a highly polished album - one of their best.

Highlights include the Stonsey Women's Intuition (if only Mick 'n' Keef were still this good!), the full-tilt rocker How Much More Can I Take, Big Time (Ian borrows his own riff from Once Bitten...), Tell It Like It Is (Mick borrowing the Get It On riff) and Mick's guitar showcase Sweet Dreamer which is breathtaking beautiful.

When the album was released, they toured the USA and Europe again to promote it. Intended in some ways as a comeback album for both men, the record company did little to promote it themselves, and it didn't sell in great numbers. They were dropped by the record company, and all plans for a follow-up were put on hold when Mick Ronson was diagnosed with liver cancer.

Unavailable for many years, this CD has finally been reissued on the Lemon label (a planned reissue on NMC having fallen through when NMC went bust). This reissue includes a couple of Ronno bonus tracks from 1971 - great for the completist but somewhat at odds with the rest of the album. The insert includes the lyrics from the original CD, but the sleeve notes are appallingly inaccurate - a shame really that Campbell Devine's notes for the aborted NMC release weren't used.

In 1995, Windsong issued an official release of their 15-Feb-89 concert, which had been recorded by the BBC for radio broadcast. This live album has since been reissued on Strange Fruit.

As is normal these days, there was material left over in the vaults, some of which is circulating amongst fans. This includes (Give Me Back My) Wings, which was demoed but never recorded, Ill Wind (now available on the Once Bitten Twice Shycompilation), More To Love Than Meets The Eye and Look Before You Leap, which IMO would have been a great single and features some beautiful guitar work from Mick Ronson

The album title is derived from "Why you... I ought to...", a phrase popularised by The Three Stooges.
