Pain (Love is a Victim), (Donnie Kehr/Ian Hunter), Ian Hunter, after All of The Good Ones Are Taken but before YUI Orta, as Pain, Reality, Vol. 1

Mick Ronson and Ian produced this forceful record Pain for Urgent, Cast the First Stone, which reached Billboard's top 100, with Donnie Kehr. Kehr gets co-writing credit on this song, and this song arose out of their collaboration. The song came from that album and Kehr, although a good singer appearing on two Grammy Award winning albums, he went on to be a successful actor as well. Originally entitled Pain (Love Is a Victim) the song featured Tommy Mandel on keyboards. Ronson added a great deal with his muscular guitar work with powerful chords and delightful choruses. Mick's spikey solo was riddled with controlled feedback superbly performed. 

The song is about lost love and the pain that results. It says it's going to take some time to get over the suffering. 

Hunter wrote a total of four songs for Donnie Kehr and the Running Back single hit #87 on Billboard. Ian also co-wrote If This Is Love, Inch by Inch.

Donnie Kehr is an American singer-songwriter, musician and producer. He co-founded the band Urgent on EMI-Manhattan Records and their album ‘Cast the First Stone’ sold over 400,000 copies to reach Billboard’s top 100.  Donnie’s voice is featured on two Grammy Award winning albums: The Who's 'Tommy', produced by Pete Townshend & Sir George Martin, and Jersey Boys produced by Bob Gaudio. 

On the Hunter Ronson version Tommy Mandel played a terrific piano piece with feedback from Mick.

His film credits include Jersey Boys directed by Clint Eastwood, Wall Street, Chaplin with Robert Downey Jr and more.  Television credits include, House of Cards, Gotham, Quantico, Tales of The City, Z-The Beginning of Everything and Inventing Anna. He has performed on the Tonight Show, David Letterman, Good Morning America, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Oscars.

Overnight Angels, Ian Hunter, Overnight Angels

The anthemic and mystical title track Overnight Angels could be a reference to Hunter's penchant for Native American allusions with references to the "Indian summer," "Appalachian Way," and spirituality. Ian does admit it was prefabricated though he liked the sound of the words and after the last more mellow album All American Aliens Boy he was striving for more of a harder, metal sound. This was his "plastic attempt" to get it back. Unfortunately, buried in the mix Hunter asks at one point "Can you hear us?" and it sounds like it is his plea against the production. The song showcases fine piano, solo voice, and an orchestral and vocal coda by long-time Hunter mate, Miller Anderson. It does figure well in the soundtrack for Asphaltnacht, a moody low-budget German film about a rock musician searching for songwriting inspiration.

An Indian summer is a period of unseasonably warm, dry weather that sometimes occurs in autumn in temperate regions of the northern hemisphere. Several sources describe a true Indian summer as not occurring until after the first frost, or more specifically the first "killing" frost.^[1][2][3]

In Appalachia, we have a different way of life. We find that values we hold can differ from most of the United States and world. We are used to family time and traditions passed down from generation to generation, serving as big events and social gathering for our families.

The Appalachian Trail (also called the A.T.), is a hiking trail in the Eastern United States, extending almost 2,200 miles (3,540 km) between Springer Mountain in Georgia and Mount Katahdin in Maine, and passing through 14 states.^[2] The Appalachian Trail Conservancy claims the Appalachian Trail to be the longest hiking-only trail in the world.^[3] More than three million people hike segments of the trail each year.^[4]

The Outsider, Ian Hunter, You're Never Alone With a Schizophrenic, Tilting the Mirror, Vol. 2

For the final version of The Outsider Ronson contributes swooping instrumentation paired with beautiful piano and howling prairie wind sounds. The track has noticeable echoes on the drums and vocal tracks while the straightforward recording allowed Ian's strong voice to be added with clarity and charm. 

The song that closes out Schizophrenic is a bit offbeat but still appropriate for Hunter who does write often of not fitting into society; the difference here is the setting and sounding like it's the Wild, Wild West. Of this one, Hunter thinks the song may have been misdirected to him; it is his Western cowboy star Roy Rogers song. However, he considers that this slow song is one of the three, with Ships and Standin' in My Light, that are among the best ballads he's ever written. 

There is also an early version on The Secret Sessions and a shorter version omitting the studio chatter on Tilting The Mirror, while there is also a live version from 2005.

The Other Man, Ian Hunter's Dirty Laundry, Acoustic Shadows, Stranded In Reality

Hunter took time off until 1986 but during this period he wrote The Other Man, a song that would not appear until Ian Hunter's Dirty Laundry. It has an interesting back story as well. Allegedly, it is from an Everly Brothers recording and Willie Nelson supposedly recorded the song twice but Ian 's manager, Sam Lederman, said none of the recordings ever came to light. As a result, it went on this CD. 

The song that ends the CD offers a different perspective from a scorned lover. Usually the anger is directed towards the woman but here the object of disdain is the other man.  He forgives the woman for all her misdeeds but he will never forgive that she may be thinking of that other man. 

There is a live version from 2008 with just Steve Holley on drums and James Mastro on guitar.

The Original Mixed Up Kid (live 19th May 2002), Ian Hunter, Originally a Mott The Hoople, Wildlife, Bag of Tricks Vol. 1

The Original Mixed Up Kid is another Hunter track from Mott The Hoople days arising on the Wildlife LP. It seems very much an autobiographical song from someone who typically does not feel as though he fits in with society. Hunter maintains that this is one of the best songs he ever wrote. Although the LP received mixed reviews Ian says that there are truthful songs on the release and personally Hunter's life was bittersweet. His first wife didn't want anything to do with the rock 'n' roll lifestyle and his marriage ended regrettably with their two children involved. As for most people issues of children during a broken marriage and custody are painful. The song was indicative of Hunter's mess at this time. 

Interestingly, the Lord Byron line from Don Juan, `And Byron said happiness is born a twin,' made Ian seem intellectual but actually it was borrowed from his wife Trudi who was fan of the writer. Hunter was quoting not Byron but Trudi. The full quote is "All who joy would win must share it. Happiness was born a twin."

Open My Eyes (Hunter/Bath), Ian Hunter, The Artful Dodger

Open My Eyes is a co-written song with Darrel Bath (guitar). Bath found it on a tape of jams from Ian's house and he refined it with his lead part before the final version. 

This fine ballad is a NYC reflection as viewed from the Hunters' ninth-floor waterside home on Kips Bay, overlooking the East River. Ian contrasts the panoramic light and sinister dark of the city punctuated by lyrical insight about the avenue of dead umbrellas and a brolly salesman on 23rd and Second Avenue. This underrated track almost smells of the city amid the gentle musical atmosphere which is "funky town," "Bellevue" which is associated with mentally disturbed people and "Imus" is a reference to DJ Don Imus WFAN radio. Imus was an American radio personality, television show host, recording artist, and author. It contains incredible imagery and word play while Hunter simply relates that it is an observation about Manhattan written from his apartment on 25th Street.

Uncle Eugene, RIP

Uncle Eugene, RIP 

Eugene F. “Gene” Smith, 83 of Pekin passed away surrounded by family at 10:40 pm, Tuesday, September 12, 2023 at Pekin Manor.

He was born to Alexander and Catherine (Kittner) Smith in Honesdale, PA on May 8, 1940. He married Ingrid Baecker on July 29, 1961 in Germany.

Gene was preceded in death by his parents and three brothers, Jimmy, Leo and Glen David Smith. 

He is survived by; the love of his life, his wife Ingrid; one son, Rodney Smith of San Jose, Ca; one daughter, Brenda (Floyd) Akins of Columbus, OH; three grandchildren, Gabriel, Nina and Tyler; two brothers, Wayne and Alex Smith, both of Honesdale, PA; and one sister Kathleen Dougher of Honesdale,PA.  

Gene worked as a supervisor for Caterpillar for 35 years retiring in 2002. He was a veteran of the United States Air Force. He graduated from Bradley University with a Bachelor of Science Degree. Gene was a member of St. Joseph Catholic Church in Pekin and was a 4th Degree Member of the Knights of Columbus.  He volunteered at the St. Vincent DePaul Society Food Bank and at Pekin Hospital. Gene enjoyed gardening, running and hiking. He ran in five marathons and hiked Appalachian Trail and the Grand Canyon. He collected Pedal Cars. Gene treasured his family, and was a proud grandpa.

A Memorial Mass will be held at 11:00 AM, Saturday, September 16, 2023 at St. Joseph Church, 303 S. 7th in Pekin with Father Michael Andrejek as celebrant. A visitation will be held one hour prior from 10:00 AM to 11:00 AM, also at the church. Inurnment will be at a later date in St. Mary’s Catholic Cemetery in Honesdale, PA. 

Memorial may be made in Gene’s name to the St. Vincent DePaul Society in Pekin. 

One Of The Boys (Mick Ralphs/Ian Hunter), All The Young Dudes, 1972, Welcome to the Club

The Mick Ralphs and Hunter song One Of The Boys was originally from the All The Young Dudes LP and played on the 1979 tour as well as being released on a 2002 version. Most of the Welcome LP is from the Sunday night show at the Roxy in LA. As a result of having too much solid material, Boys was cut as well as crowd responses. Ralphs began the song in 1971 but Hunter couldn't sing Can't Get Enough so the same riff is used in Boys for the Dudes LP and Mick got credit for writing half the song. Ralphs finished the original later and had a huge hit with Bad Company. Boys is probably more Mott The Hoople than Dudes is. Live the song was so dynamic that Eric Parker actually left his drum stool on the song.

Alejandro Escovedo was a fan, covered a couple of Hunter songs, and Ian heard about it before meeting at a benefit in Chicago. When Escovedo was ill Ian offered to do a song for a benefit project CD. Andy York produced Hunter at Rick Tedesco's, The Guitar Hanger, Studio, with Steve Holley, drums, and James Mastro, guitar, for the Por Vida benefit album.

One Fine Day was first conceived in Mott but it is an outtake from the first Ian Hunter LP and Ian hated it with a passion but drummer Dennis Eliot thought it was so good it should have been a hit. It can be found on a compilation and was a bonus track on the 30th Anniversary issue of the LP Ian Hunter once Ian had recorded new vocals.

One of Ian's best known songs which was both a single and an album track; and, he summarizes it briefly as 1970s Chuck Berry with a twist. It's a strong track that has just about everything going for it: beat, build, and restraint. In the latter part of the AIR sessions it started with a Little Queenie rhythm guitar style vamp along with the unplanned but signature "Allo" intro paralleling the "Goodbye" that concluded Mott The Hoople's Saturday Gigs. Building in intensity, then mid-way, Ronson's guitar sparkled culminating in a fifteen-second vibrato held over the bridge until driven home to the final choruses. Mick doubled on bass as well. 

It took Hunter ten hours to write the music and lyrics while at Mick's home when Ronson's wife Suzi brought in coffee for the effort while working at their flat behind the Albert Hall. The verse and the bridge came first using a little drum machine but the hook took longer. One night Ian sat with a drummer in the Speakeasy talking about the song when the drummer made a comment and something clicked in Ian's head; this was ironic timing since they were both sitting there drunk. In any case, a bell went off for Hunter and he rushed home to write the song while saying a bit about a girl, the Mott breakup, and rock business all at once.  

Hunter thinks of it as a first-rate track. The regal presence of Marc Bolan popped into the studio where Hunter Ronson were recording and reacted by saying he always underestimated Ian: better late than never. It would be the only time they spoke. 

It was a 1975 UK Top Ten hit and Hunter was sure that it would be. Later, Guns and Roses would share a manager with Great White and both wanted to record the song. Great White only sold two million while Guns and Roses sold seven million on the album that it would have been featured on; that meant Hunter lost a few bob there. Oddly, the lead singer was nominated for a Grammy and the band's version was an American Top Five single in 1989. The song was later covered also by Shaun Cassidy and Status Quo.  

There are numerous live versions: three from 1979, and also from 1980, 1981, 1989, 1994, 2002, 2004, 2007, and 2008.
