Pain (Love is a Victim), (Donnie Kehr/Ian Hunter), Ian Hunter, after All of The Good Ones Are Taken but before YUI Orta, as Pain, Reality, Vol. 1

Mick Ronson and Ian produced this forceful record Pain for Urgent, Cast the First Stone, which reached Billboard's top 100, with Donnie Kehr. Kehr gets co-writing credit on this song, and this song arose out of their collaboration. The song came from that album and Kehr, although a good singer appearing on two Grammy Award winning albums, he went on to be a successful actor as well. Originally entitled Pain (Love Is a Victim) the song featured Tommy Mandel on keyboards. Ronson added a great deal with his muscular guitar work with powerful chords and delightful choruses. Mick's spikey solo was riddled with controlled feedback superbly performed.

The song is about lost love and the pain that results. It says it's going to take some time to get over the suffering.

Hunter wrote a total of four songs for Donnie Kehr and the Running Back single hit #87 on Billboard. Ian also co-wrote If This Is Love, Inch by Inch.

Donnie Kehr is an American singer-songwriter, musician and producer. He co-founded the band Urgent on EMI-Manhattan Records and their album ‘Cast the First Stone’ sold over 400,000 copies to reach Billboard’s top 100.  Donnie’s voice is featured on two Grammy Award winning albums: The Who's 'Tommy', produced by Pete Townshend & Sir George Martin, and Jersey Boys produced by Bob Gaudio.

On the Hunter Ronson version Tommy Mandel played a terrific piano piece with feedback from Mick.

Also recorded at The Cabaret, San Jose CA 16th December 1989 and it is on Missing In Action.

Donnie Kehr is an American actor, having originated roles in Broadway's Jersey BoysBilly Elliot, the Who's-Tommy, The Mystery of Edwin Drood, The Human Comedy and many others.

His film credits include Jersey Boys directed by Clint Eastwood, Wall Street, Chaplin with Robert Downey Jr and more.  Television credits include, House of Cards, Gotham, Quantico, Tales of The CityZ-The Beginning of Everything and Inventing Anna. He has performed on the Tonight Show, David Letterman, Good Morning America, Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade and the Oscars.

There is live version as well on two different recordings due to minor differences between the two.

Pain

(Donnie Kehr/Ian Hunter)

I believe in magic
Ain't it kinda tragic
When you find out
Angels can be devils
You were never on the level with me babe, at all

Pain, pain, pain!
I got this pain
Sittin' on the midnight train

Beggars can be choosers
Winners can be losers
I'll get over you somehow
It's gonna take a little time
To put you to the back of my mind, forever

Pain, shootin' down the length o' my brain
I got this pain
Nothin' is the same
When love is a victim
Love is a victim of pain

Ain't no doubt about it babe
Love is a victim of pain I'm lonely
And I don't know what to do about you babe
'Cos Loneliness is such a drag

Pain (live 16th December 1989)5:54This live version (recorded at the Cabaret, San Jose CA) was released on Missing In Action, and on Bag Of Tricks (Vol 1) (box set only). The version on Bag Of Tricks is shorter (at 5:47) due to the song introduction being omitted at the start, and shorter crowd noise at the end.

Overnight Angels, Ian Hunter, Overnight Angels

The anthemic and mystical title track Overnight Angels could be a reference to Hunter's penchant for Native American allusions with references to the "Indian summer," "Appalachian Way," and spirituality. Ian does admit it was prefabricated though he liked the sound of the words and after the last more mellow album All American Aliens Boy he was striving for more of a harder, metal sound. This was his "plastic attempt" to get it back. Unfortunately, buried in the mix Hunter asks at one point "Can you hear us?" and it sounds like it is his plea against the production. The song showcases fine piano, solo voice, and an orchestral and vocal coda by long-time Hunter mate, Miller Anderson. It does figure well in the soundtrack for Asphaltnacht, a moody low-budget German film about a rock musician searching for songwriting inspiration.

Ian Hunter On Track for Sonicbond Publishing, TheDoctorOfDigital@pm.me

An Indian summer is a period of unseasonably warm, dry weather that sometimes occurs in autumn in temperate regions of the northern hemisphere. Several sources describe a true Indian summer as not occurring until after the first frost, or more specifically the first "killing" frost.[1][2][3]

In Appalachia, we have a different way of life. We find that values we hold can differ from most of the United States and world. We are used to family time and traditions passed down from generation to generation, serving as big events and social gathering for our families.

The Appalachian Trail (also called the A.T.), is a hiking trail in the Eastern United States, extending almost 2,200 miles (3,540 km) between Springer Mountain in Georgia and Mount Katahdin in Maine, and passing through 14 states.[2] The Appalachian Trail Conservancy claims the Appalachian Trail to be the longest hiking-only trail in the world.[3] More than three million people hike segments of the trail each year.[4]

Overnight Angels

(Ian Hunter)

In the heat of the Indian summer
Out along the Appalachian Way
You can hear the sound of the Overnight Angels
As they pray
Charged by the light of some mariners lantern
Spitting out a cold but triangular spray
Can't you hear the screams of the Overnight Angels
As they play

Talking to the spirits through a silver curtain
Reaching out beyond the length of the light
You can catch a glimpse of an Overnight Angel
As he shines
Dancing through the toys of the dead and the living
Laughing at the poets changing their rhymes
Can't you feel the pulse of the Overnight Angels
Beating time

Can you hear us can you hear us
We're talking 'bout the Overnight Angels Can you hear us can you hear us
We're talking 'bout the Overnight Angels Angels Angels

Children of the junkies led the revolution
Push yourselves over get yourselves there
Someone throw their arms round the Overnight Angels
Cause they care
Angels don't need no phony religion
Throw them out along with the ethnic nowheres
They will never speak to the Overnight Angels
They can only stare

Can you hear us can you hear us
We're talking 'bout the Overnight Angels Can you hear us can you hear us
We're talking 'bout the Overnight Angels Angels Angels Angels

Can you hear us can you hear us
We're talking 'bout the Overnight Angels
Can you hear us can you hear us
We're talking 'bout the Overnight Angels Angels Angels Angels
Can you hear us can you hear us
We're talking 'bout the Overnight Angels
Can you hear us can you hear us
We're talking 'bout the Overnight Angels Angels Angels Angels
Can you hear us can you hear us
We're talking 'bout the Overnight Angels
Can you hear us can you hear us
We're talking 'bout the Overnight Angels Angels Angels Angels
Angels Angels Angels Angels

The Outsider, Ian Hunter, You're Never Alone With a Schizophrenic, Tilting the Mirror, Vol. 2

For the final version of The Outsider Ronson contributes swooping instrumentation paired with beautiful piano and howling prairie wind sounds. The track has noticeable echoes on the drums and vocal tracks while the straightforward recording allowed Ian's strong voice to be added with clarity and charm.

The song that closes out Schizophrenic is a bit offbeat but still appropriate for Hunter who does write often of not fitting into society; the difference here is the setting and sounding like it's the Wild, Wild West. Of this one, Hunter thinks the song may have been misdirected to him; it is his Western cowboy star Roy Rogers song. However, he considers that this slow song is one of the three, with Ships and Standin' in My Light, that are among the best ballads he's ever written.

There is also an early version on The Secret Sessions and a shorter version omitting the studio chatter on Tilting The Mirror, while there is also a live version from 2005.

The Outsider

(Ian Hunter)

Death be my mistress, guns be my wife
Breath is my witness and roads are my life
Just give my future's clean as a knife
Far on the way from L.A.

The sun heats the saddle, sand in my hair
Looking for water and there's sweat everywhere
Know that I'm nearer I smell damp air
I ain't tasted coffee for days

When the leaves are down I'll be southward bound
Hunters hunt the outsider.
When the wind grows cold, when the sun grows old,
Nothing holds the outsider

Just killed a man in a town called Nightfall
Damned if I can't remember it all
My hand it was shaking but his talk it was tall
I paid for the funeral crew
And it seems like I never reach Mexico
They're heading me off every place that I go
I'm sick of the fact that I've got to lay low
What else can an outsider do

I know they're near to me, I don't have to see
Just let me be the outsider
They ain't far behind, they're always on my mind
They won't find the outsider
The outsider

When the leaves are down I'll be southward bound
Hunter's haunt the outsider.
When the wind grows cold, when the sun grows old,
Nothing holds the outsider
The outsider. The outsider.

The Other Man, Ian Hunter's Dirty Laundry, Acoustic Shadows, Stranded In Reality

Hunter took time off until 1986 but during this period he wrote The Other Man, a song that would not appear until Ian Hunter's Dirty Laundry. It has an interesting back story as well. Allegedly, it is from an Everly Brothers recording and Willie Nelson supposedly recorded the song twice but Ian 's manager, Sam Lederman, said none of the recordings ever came to light. As a result, it went on this CD.

The song that ends the CD offers a different perspective from a scorned lover. Usually the anger is directed towards the woman but here the object of disdain is the other man.  He forgives the woman for all her misdeeds but he will never forgive that she may be thinking of that other man.

There is a live version from 2008 with just Steve Holley on drums and James Mastro on guitar.

The Other Man

(Ian Hunter)

I forgive you when you can't look straight into my eye
I forgive you when you never want to hold my hand
I forgive you 'cause you're all I've got and I love you
But I'll never forgive the other man

I forgive you even though I know the secret you keep
I forgive you even though you don't give a damn
I forgive you 'cause deep inside you're part of me
But I'll never forgive the other man

Somewhere in the night he's calling
And somewhere in your heart you're falling

I'll forgive you when you stay out late and you never phone
I'll forgive you even though I'll never understand
I'll forgive you 'cause you're all I've got and I love you
But I'll never forgive the other man

Somewhere in the night he's calling
And somewhere in your heart you're falling

I'll forgive you when you stay out late and you never phone
I'll forgive you even though I'll never understand
I'll forgive you 'cause you're all I've got and I love you
But I'll never forgive the other man
No, I'll never forgive as long as I live
No, I'll never forgive the other man
I said I'll never never never forgive
No, I'll never forgive the other man

The album ends with a trademark Ian weepie, this time the great The Other Man in which he forgives his lady but not the guy who shagged her.

The Original Mixed Up Kid (live 19th May 2002), Ian Hunter, Originally a Mott The Hoople, Wildlife, Bag of Tricks Vol. 1

The Original Mixed Up Kid is another Hunter track from Mott The Hoople days arising on the Wildlife LP. It seems very much an autobiographical song from someone who typically does not feel as though he fits in with society. Hunter maintains that this is one of the best songs he ever wrote. Although the LP received mixed reviews Ian says that there are truthful songs on the release and personally Hunter's life was bittersweet. His first wife didn't want anything to do with the rock 'n' roll lifestyle and his marriage ended regrettably with their two children involved. As for most people issues of children during a broken marriage and custody are painful. The song was indicative of Hunter's mess at this time.

Interestingly, the Lord Byron line from Don Juan, `And Byron said happiness is born a twin,' made Ian seem intellectual but actually it was borrowed from his wife Trudi who was fan of the writer. Hunter was quoting not Byron but Trudi. The full quote is "All who joy would win must share it. Happiness was born a twin."

It was recorded at The Life Cafe, Manchester UK 19th May 2002.

Don Juan

All who joy would win must share it. Happiness was born a Twin.

Lord Byron

Original Mixed-Up Kid

(Ian Hunter)

The original mixed-up kid
Sleeps with the ladies all night
Home in the morning light
To nothin'
Climbs in to an empty bed
Pillows around his head
Hide the tears he sheds
For no one
And Byron said Happiness is born its twin
In those who share, for they will always win
But what about the man who tries so hard
But his heart is locked within
The original mixed-up kid
Must have been at the end of the line
When they gave out the forms to sign
For someone
And he can't make up his mind where he wants to go
Ain't there a heaven ain't there a hell well he just don't know
For in a crowded street he can see the sleet
When the other men just see the snow
The original mixed-up kid be on your conscience bound (?)
For you turned him upside down for nothin'

Open My Eyes (Hunter/Bath), Ian Hunter, The Artful Dodger

Open My Eyes is a co-written song with Darrel Bath (guitar). Bath found it on a tape of jams from Ian's house and he refined it with his lead part before the final version.

This fine ballad is a NYC reflection as viewed from the Hunters' ninth-floor waterside home on Kips Bay, overlooking the East River. Ian contrasts the panoramic light and sinister dark of the city punctuated by lyrical insight about the avenue of dead umbrellas and a brolly salesman on 23rd and Second Avenue. This underrated track almost smells of the city amid the gentle musical atmosphere which is "funky town," "Bellevue" which is associated with mentally disturbed people and "Imus" is a reference to DJ Don Imus WFAN radio. Imus was an American radio personality, television show host, recording artist, and author. It contains incredible imagery and word play while Hunter simply relates that it is an observation about Manhattan written from his apartment on 25th Street.

Open My Eyes

(Ian Hunter/Darrel Bath)

On the Avenue of dead umbrellas
In a place where nothin' sleeps
No one's pickin' up the pieces - no one speaks
Snow falls down - God dusts funky town
For once this place looks pure
Tell that to the people who live in the wind - they ain't so sure

In the middle of a violent night - in the glare of a naked light
In the middle of a nightmare
At the bottom of the deepest well - in the middle of a private hell
Shit scared - out there - nowhere

Then I open my eyes - ice on the window - the sun is tryin' to break through

Then I open my eyes - in the land of the livin' - and it's all right
Seen a man rattle in a battle that no one could win
I had to turn my soul away
Shit's gonna happen - whether you like it or not
S' just the way it is

Then I open my eyes - boats on the river - headin' down the east side
Then I open my eyes - and the trash(?) slips away
Soft and supple - like some alibi
You been walkin in her sleep - there ain't no cure for the secrets you hide

In the middle of my wildest dream - in a place where nothin's what it seems
At the time of a great loss
From the hoods and the broken homes - this danger's got a smell of it's own
In the middle of c-c-chaos
In the valley of the shadow of death - the Bellevue boys out kickin' ass
In the middle of fire
Inside the belly of the beast - in a place where wonders never cease
You go higher, higher, higher

Then I open my eyes - life in a nutshell - it's over 'fore you know it
Then I open my eyes

And the city wakes up - puts coffee in cups - when I open my eyes
And the kids go to school - Imus rules - when I open my eyes
I love you n' you love me
N' it rains so I buy an umbrella from the guy on 23rd and Second Avenue

One Of The Boys (Mick Ralphs/Ian Hunter), All The Young Dudes, 1972, Welcome to the Club

The Mick Ralphs and Hunter song One Of The Boys was originally from the All The Young Dudes LP and played on the 1979 tour as well as being released on a 2002 version. Most of the Welcome LP is from the Sunday night show at the Roxy in LA. As a result of having too much solid material, Boys was cut as well as crowd responses. Ralphs began the song in 1971 but Hunter couldn't sing Can't Get Enough so the same riff is used in Boys for the Dudes LP and Mick got credit for writing half the song. Ralphs finished the original later and had a huge hit with Bad Company. Boys is probably more Mott The Hoople than Dudes is. Live the song was so dynamic that Eric Parker actually left his drum stool on the song.

One of the Boys

(Mick Ralphs/Ian Hunter)

Well I growed my hair just to scare the teacher
My goodness gracious me ain't little Johnny a creature
And I lost count of the times when I never bathed
I'm one of the boys
One of the boys
I don't say much but I make a big noise
And it's growing alright its growing
I borrowed Gypsy's Gibson just to show them
And now I'm a rock and roll star I don't want to know them
If they want a straight they better go out a grow one
I'm one of the boys
One of the boys
I'm only human so I ain't got much choice
And I know it yeah I know it
Alright!
Hit it come on!
I'm just one of the boys
One of the boys
I don't say much but I make a big noise
And it's growing yeah its growing
I'm one of the boys
One of the boys
I'm only human so I ain't got much choice
And I know it yes I know it
One of the boys
I'm just one of the boys
One of the boys
I'm just one of the boys
One of the boys
I'm just one of the boys
One of the boys
I'm just one of the boys
Lets go! Alright!

One More Time (Alejandro Escovedo), Tilting The Mirror - Rarities (box set only)

Alejandro Escovedo was a fan, covered a couple of Hunter songs, and Ian heard about it before meeting at a benefit in Chicago. When Escovedo was ill Ian offered to do a song for a benefit project CD. Andy York produced Hunter at Rick Tedesco's, The Guitar Hanger, Studio, with Steve Holley, drums, and James Mastro, guitar, for the Por Vida benefit album.

If you found me lost on your porch one night,
Would you take me in and hold me tight?
And wrap a dream around my head,
In case I tumble out of bed?

Just one more time
Just one more time
Just one more time
Just one more time

If you found me hanging without a prayer,
Would you cut me down and lay me there?
And wash the sins off of my hands,
So I might get another chance?

Just one more time
Just one more time
Just one more time
Just one more time

If I lost the buttons on my coat,
And I couldn't find the golden note,
Could I use your hands to find the light,
So I might make it through the night?

So I count my blessings in this world of sin;
The holes in the wall let the cold come in;
Could I use your skin to keep me warm,
So I might make it through the night?

Just one more time
Just one more time
Just one more time
Just one more time

Burning America: In the Best Interest of the Country?

In recent times, astute observers of American society have noticed a profound transformation taking place within our government institutions, corporations, universities, and cultural landscape. It has become increasingly evident that certain changes have taken hold, with implications that cannot be ignored.  We come across reports detailing the introduction of gender ideology in our schools, where young children are subjected to its influence. It is distressingly common to witness acts of violence, rioting, and looting on the streets of our major cities. Moreover, the economic stability of the American middle class appears to be on a perpetual decline. Meanwhile, the institutions tasked with safeguarding our rights, such as federal law enforcement agencies, have become deeply entangled in political agendas.  Clearly, there exists a ruling class that governs our nation guided by an ideology that poses a threat to the well-being of ordinary, hard working Americans. To protect our cherished liberties from these radical ideologies, it becomes imperative to comprehend how these ideas emerged and spread over the past few decades, often in stark contrast to traditional American values and objectives. This undertaking serves as a means of reaching out to those who seek to understand the current state of their nation, to engage with the notion of a fading American citizenship.  Within the following pages, we will delve into a range of topics that shed light on this phenomenon:  The distinctions between the mid-century liberals and the radical elements that emerged in opposition to them. An exploration of how the post-sixties radicals ascended to positions of power within government bureaucracies and educational institutions. A close examination of the principles of neoliberalism, which emerged in the late 1970s, and the ways in which these ideas transformed the moral and economic fabric of America. An exploration of the underlying factors that led to what has been referred to as "The Great Awokening" during Barack Obama's second term, along with an examination of the ways in which the political and business elites embraced the cultural Left. By delving into these subjects, we aim to equip readers with a comprehensive understanding of the historical roots and contemporary manifestations of the ideologies that currently shape our nation. It is through this understanding that we can hope to navigate the complex terrain and preserve the fundamental principles that lie at the heart of our American identity. One Fine Day, Ian Hunter, outtake from the Ian Hunter sessions

One Fine Day was first conceived in Mott but it is an outtake from the first Ian Hunter LP and Ian hated it with a passion but drummer Dennis Eliot thought it was so good it should have been a hit. It can be found on a compilation and was a bonus track on the 30th Anniversary issue of the LP Ian Hunter once Ian had recorded new vocals.

One Fine Day

(Ian Hunter)

Well we're back on the street
Back on the air, one fine day
We'll be back over here
Back over there, one fine day
My whole world is upside down
A lot of people want me under the ground
But I know it'll change, they'll come around
One fine day

Back on line, back on track
One fine day
No more stabbing me in the back
One fine day
Losing your love don't bother me now
I do my job and the love will come
I'll be back on Deal Street having fun
One fine day

I don't care what people say
I ain't gonna live in yesterday
I know I'm gonna be okay
One fine day
One fine day
One fine day
Hit me, hit me, hit me
(I tell you what, I think we should er
I think , I think we should knock
That whole last instrumental bit on the head)

One Fine Day2:21This outtake from the Ian Hunter sessions was originally released on the compilation Once Bitten Twice Shy. It can also be found on the 30th Anniversary issue of Ian Hunter.

Once Bitten Twice Shy, Ian Hunter, A single and album track, Ian Hunter

One of Ian's best known songs which was both a single and an album track; and, he summarizes it briefly as 1970s Chuck Berry with a twist. It's a strong track that has just about everything going for it: beat, build, and restraint. In the latter part of the AIR sessions it started with a Little Queenie rhythm guitar style vamp along with the unplanned but signature "Allo" intro paralleling the "Goodbye" that concluded Mott The Hoople's Saturday Gigs. Building in intensity, then mid-way, Ronson's guitar sparkled culminating in a fifteen-second vibrato held over the bridge until driven home to the final choruses. Mick doubled on bass as well.

It took Hunter ten hours to write the music and lyrics while at Mick's home when Ronson's wife Suzi brought in coffee for the effort while working at their flat behind the Albert Hall. The verse and the bridge came first using a little drum machine but the hook took longer. One night Ian sat with a drummer in the Speakeasy talking about the song when the drummer made a comment and something clicked in Ian's head; this was ironic timing since they were both sitting there drunk. In any case, a bell went off for Hunter and he rushed home to write the song while saying a bit about a girl, the Mott breakup, and rock business all at once.

Hunter thinks of it as a first-rate track. The regal presence of Marc Bolan popped into the studio where Hunter Ronson were recording and reacted by saying he always underestimated Ian: better late than never. It would be the only time they spoke.

It was a 1975 UK Top Ten hit and Hunter was sure that it would be. Later, Guns and Roses would share a manager with Great White and both wanted to record the song. Great White only sold two million while Guns and Roses sold seven million on the album that it would have been featured on; that meant Hunter lost a few bob there. Oddly, the lead singer was nominated for a Grammy and the band's version was an American Top Five single in 1989. The song was later covered also by Shaun Cassidy and Status Quo.

There are numerous live versions: three from 1979, and also from 1980, 1981, 1989, 1994, 2002, 2004, 2007, and 2008.

Also recorded at My Father's Place, Roslyn NY 12th June 1979 on Collateral Damage.

In 2002 the song was broadcast for Live At The World Cafe: The Next Decade
