You Can't Live In The Past, Ian Hunter, Fingers Crossed

From his song output alone we can grasp that Hunter does not live in the past and he is always looking forward which is the subject of You Can't Live In The Past applied to an even more critical situation. This song is replete with references and is a sidelined attack on the futility of war; a theme he has explored more directly elsewhere. "Sally Army" is British informal short for the Salvation Army which is a Christian body founded in 1865 organized on quasi-military lines for evangelism and social work among poor people. Not surprisingly, singing Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, the English Christmas carol from 1739, near the "Hope n Anchor," a pub on Upper Street in the London Borough of Islington, which opened in 1880 and during the mid-1970s actually a home to pub rock and punk rock. "Vera" is a reference to Dame Vera Margaret Lynn the English singer and entertainer whose musical recordings and performances were very popular during World War II. The scene is arranged for "that little yellow envelope" or the notice from the front that the soldier was killed. Ian sings:

Kiss the toothbrush, kiss the razor
Light the gas and leave it on
Fall asleep upon the sofa
Quietly die inside his ragged uniform
Hunter is saying you have to move on even when a loved one is dead. This is a painful, powerful, and nonetheless, true sentiment.

British informal short for Salvation Army Christian body founded in 1865 by William Booth and organized on quasi-military lines for evangelism and social work among poor people

Hope and Anchor is a pub on Upper Street, in the London Borough of Islington which first opened its doors in 1880. During the mid-1970s it was one of the first pubs to embrace the emergent, but brief, phenomenon of pub rock. With the decline of this movement, the pub went on to become a leading venue in the punk rockmovement. Hope and Anchor is still an operational pub and live music venue today, owned and operated by the Greene King brewing company. It is a Grade II listed building.[1]

"Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" is an English Christmas carol that first appeared in 1739 in the collection Hymns and Sacred Poems. The carol, based on Luke 2:14, tells of an angelic chorus singing praises to God. As it is known in the modern era, it features lyrical contributions from Charles Wesley and George Whitefield, two of the founding ministers of Methodism, with music adapted from "Vaterland, in deinen Gauen" from Felix Mendelssohn's cantata Festgesang.

Dame Vera Margaret Lynn CH DBE OStJ (née Welch; 20 March 1917 – 18 June 2020) was an English singer and entertainer whose musical recordings and performances were very popular during World War II. She is honorifically known as the "Forces' Sweetheart", having given outdoor concerts for the troops in EgyptIndiaand Burma during the war as part of the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA). The songs most associated with her include "We'll Meet Again", "(There'll Be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs of Dover", "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" and "There'll Always Be an England".

You Can't Live In The Past

(Ian Hunter)

Sally Army on the corner,
Hope n Anchor, closing time
I watched you stagger I watched you reelin'
I watched you slowly leaving this world behind

Hark the herald angels singin'
On the street there's little hope
People all scared to see the postman
On the doorstep with that little yellow envelope

I can't help you with anything if you can't help yourself
I can't pull you out of this if you wanna be somewhere else

You can never go back, you can never go back
Yesterday's gone, you've gotta move on
You can't live in the past

When you're lost in the rain
Try not to go there again
And Vera sings that same old song
On and on and on and on and on

Kiss the toothbrush, kiss the razor
Light the gas and leave it on
Fall asleep upon the sofa
Quietly die inside his ragged uniform

I can't give you anything if you can't give yourself
I can't get you out of this if you wanna be somewhere else

You can never go back, you can never go back
Those days are gone, you gotta move on
You can't live in the past

And all things bright and beautiful
This house was always full of people
Holdin' hands and making plans, wedding bells were gonna chime
But I don't think I'll ever really understand man's inhumanity to man

Sally army on the corner
Hearse and mourners all in line
Empty glasses, empty ashtrays
Pull the blinds down gov'ner 'cos it's closing time

You can never go back
You can never go back
Those days are gone, you gotta move on
You can't live in the past
When you're lost in the rain
Try not to go there again
And Vera sings that same old song
On and on and on and on...

Ian has always had his feet planted firmly in reality, as on You Can't Live In The Past he notes "You can never go back, those days are gone".

Words (Big Mouth), (Lyrics by Ian Hunter, Music by Ian Hunter and Andy York) Ian Hunter, Shrunken Heads

The opening track Words (Big Mouth) is an arresting start to the CD. Hunter apologizes, to Trudi, for mouthing off the night before. He has a big one, mouth that is, and he's sorry. What a combination, Winston Churchill's disease of manic-depression, the "Black Dog: coupled with alcohol and out it comes:

Black Dog lurking in the alleyway
Alcohol arriving with the key
Open up the floodgates and out it comes
Like a river full of graffiti

They spill out:

Words... Nasty little lizards...
Grammatical bacteria

These "cruel little clusters" are powerful images and a graphic description unleashed by saying the wrong things. The Hunters go to Rick and Steffie Tedesco's house in Connecticut once a week and when inebriated the mood can get ugly.

There are two live versions from 2007 and 2010.

disease of manic-depression

Words (Big Mouth)

(Lyrics by Ian Hunter, Music by Ian Hunter and Andy York)

[Spoken] I got a big one
It's me, I didn't mean to wake you
I owe you an apology about last night
Well I was just letting off steam
Black Dog lurking in the alleyway
Alcohol arriving with the key
Open up the floodgates and out it comes
Like a river full of graffiti

Words... little beads of poison
Letting out the venom
One thing for certain baby
I got a big mouth

I'll change... I promise you, I'm gonna change
I gotta turn a new leaf
And this will be the very last time
I put my foot in it
Black Dog putting these words in my mouth
Well don't take any notice of them
I don't mean to vent my spleen
I hate it when that happens

Just words... cruel little clusters
Maiming the vernacular
One thing for certain baby
I got a big mouth, I got a big mouth

Don't leave... I'm beggin' you please don't leave
These words are only make believe
You can take 'em with a grain of salt
Words can eat a man alive

Black Dog rotting in some broken bar
Handclaps rattling my bones
Hound dogs fading into wilderness
And I just wanna come home

Words... Nasty little lizards...
Grammatical bacteria
One thing's for certain baby
I got a big mouth, I got a big mouth
I got a big mouth, yeah

Just words
I'm getting on your nerves
Little shops of horrors
I got a big mouth

Yakity Yakity Yakity Yak...

There are some astonishingly good tracks on here. Words (Big Mouth) opens things up nicely where Ian apologises to a loved one for mouthing off the night before

Women's Intuition, Ian Hunter, YUI Orta

The Slimmer Twins wrote Women's Intuition together and it was one of the last tracks for the album. It sounds similar to The Rolling Stones as if they were still performing compelling music. This is a song similar to Bastard in that it sounds realistic and what being a relationship can be like. The woman is like Judas and used synonymously with betrayal as he was the disciple who betrayed Jesus to the Sanhedrin in the Garden of Gethsemane by kissing him on the cheek  to reveal his identity for arrest. A women involved with a musician is always whining yet:

I gave you-the best years of-your miserable life

The woman went wrong somewhere but should listen to her women's intuition or she will end up on her ass. The song is about Mick Ronson and Hunter writing about women who want to break up a band or keep a musician from the music. Men and women need to work it out: aggression vs. possession. Bernard Edwards played bass.

There is a single edit version and live version from 1989.

Also recorded at The Cabaret, San Jose CA 16th December 1989 and is on Missing In Action.

Judas betrayed Jesus to the Sanhedrin in the Garden of Gethsemane by kissing him on the cheek and addressing him as "master" to reveal his identity in the darkness to the crowd who had come to arrest him.[2] His name is often used synonymously with betrayal or treason.

Women's Intuition

(Ian Hunter)

Through the haze the mirror cries-hits you right between the eyes
You don't know-but you got the judas in you babe
You can't trust
You can't deliver
Always whinin' you were sold down the river
I gave you-the best years of-your miserable life

Where did you go wrong girl, where did you go wrong
Where did you go wrong babe-nice try, wrong guy
You're gonna wind up on your ass-you should have listened to your
WOMEN'S INTUITION

You can come (run)-but you can't hide-something messed you up inside
Ain't my fault-don't blame me-if you're dazed and confused
You're a lie, you're a television, tryin't drag into your prison
Had enough o'sleepin' rough-its over with you

where did you go wrong babe
Where did you go wrong
Where did you go wrong girl
Nice try
Goodbye
You're gonna wind up on your ass-you should;ve listened to your
WOMEN'S INTUITION

Tarred by the same old feathers-guess we got to stick together
But I say to you-don't ever invade-my destiny
Bad enough I ain't normal, give up tryin't make me formal
What I need when I bleed
Don't mean nothing to you

Where did you go wrong babe, where did you go wrong
Where did you go wrong girl
Dumb moves, no class
You're gonna wind up on your ass-you should 've listened to your
WOMEN'sINTUITION

(Give Me Back My) Wings, Ian Hunter, Originally demoed for YUI Orta; this live version (recorded The Dominion, London England) was released on BBC Live in Concert

Hunter began working with John Jansen in 1987 but (Give Me Back My) Wings is a song that fell through the cracks; it was demoed and was the first song proposed for YUI Orta but it didn't make the cut; it was released as a live version from 1989. The theme is mysterious and as lofty as the existence of God as in the song God (Take 1). Here in order to have wings Hunter says:

First it was the Mothers
Then it was the wives
I think that God's a woman
I know she runs my life
And she can still
Oh and I wonder when

It is a reflective track and Hunter is considering how much he owes his family. The persona of Ian Hunter rock star results in drama at times but this is an acknowledgement of how much he owes others and a higher power.

Robbie Alter lived next to Ian in NYC and put an amazing sound down on guitar. Originally it was a ballad with Alter but David Letterman's drummer, Anton Figg came to Hunter's house in Katonah and rearranged the song. Producer Bernard Edwards nixed it for YUI Orta so it didn't fit. Live the song was done with Mick Ronson on his Telecaster and since Hunter rarely looks back the song was just dropped from a regular release but he likes it. Live the song was a showcase for the young Pat Kilbride who just kicks on this track.

(Give Me Back My) Wings

(Ian Hunter)

Give me back my wings
You know I have to fly high
If the bird cannot sing
Then his spirit will die

I never said I was right
You can't explain some things
Just give me back my wings
You know I have to reach higher
If the bird cannot soar
Then he loses desire

I never said it was fair
You can't explain some things
Just give me back my wings
Give me back my wings

First it was the Mothers
Then it was the wives
I think that God's a woman
I know she runs my life
And she can still
Oh and I wonder when

Just give me back my wings
You know I have to go higher
If the bird cannot soar Then he loses desire

I never said I was right
You can't explain some things
Just give me back my wings
Give me back my wings

Win It All, Ian Hunter, Man Overboard

The melody is well-done on Win It All and it is a gentle, hymn-like track featuring soft piano and sensitive accordion punctuated with Hunter's restrained vocal. This is a positive track about never giving up and is something that Ian himself can advise. He didn't give up on himself and kept at it in order to have a successful musical career. The melody came first and later on the lyrics to this song. Every once in a while one comes along and Ian will write a lullaby something similar to Don't Let Go. A song like this people will relate that it got them through a difficult period. Songs do soothe us and make us feel better as demonstrated with scientific research.

Win It All

(Ian Hunter)

In the morning when you get up, free your mind of blame
It's destructive, it can hurt you, and you gotta start again
When all hope has gone and your backs to the wall
You can win this, you can win this, you can win it all

When you feel the pressure mounting, look for things that make you smile
Sometimes questions have no answers, sometimes answers take a while
Into each and every life a little rain is gonna fall
You can win it, you can win it, you can win it all

For we can't see the future and we can't see the end
But you can beat this, you'll defeat this, you can win this and then

You'll be older, you'll be wiser, you'll be easier in your mind
When the morning comes to get you, you can leave the past behind
Some things just happen, it ain't nobody's fault
You can win this, you can win this, you can win it all

Wild n' Free, Ian Hunter, Overnight Angels

Wild n' Free drives as hard a a pile driver kicked in with a phased drum intro before a slew of guitars and bass frantically hit. This song could be autobiographical in that it describes much of Hunter's young life. He was stuck in dead end jobs as a young person. As he broke out and went on the road his "babe" did not understand as most people don't and they follow what they have been told and what is on the TV. Ian could out-punk the young kids of his day but with a maturity that they could not match in literacy and verbal fury. Hunter reminisces that it was a track that came together fast.

Wild East, Ian Hunter, You're Never Alone With a Schizophrenic

The slow burn groove of Wild East featured Hoople-style piano chords and blistering sax. It is a mildly energetic and melodic song about the Wild West moved relocated to New York.

Hunter enjoys writing tales of those who are down and out and here is one such example. It is an ordinary bloke but one with literary references atypical of pop songs. He feels like Jason sent by Pelias on an impossible mission, to fetch the Golden Fleece, along the way the Cyclops is laughing at him. This guy is a druggie but someone from the methadone clinic calls  and:

He writes all my lyrics backwards on diapers

All this is happening while loving the grease of wild east. We see Jezebel, who along with her husband, instituted the worship of the false gods of Baal and Asherah, talking to Jane. I'd speculate but maybe this is Sweet Jane. Hunter comments on this song as about NYC.

There is a live version from 1987.

Searching for the Golden Fleece

The reason why Jason needed to find the Golden Fleece in the first place is because of the order given by Pelias. Pelias came up with the idea from Jason, who conversed with his uncle on what he would do to keep someone away. Jason did not realize at the time that Pelias wanted to rid himself of Jason forever. Pelias had taken the throne in Iolcus from Jason’s father, making Jason no longer the heir to the crown. So, since Pelias most likely felt threatened by Jason, he didn’t want him anywhere near Iolcus.

Pelias sent him on an impossible mission, to fetch the Golden Fleece from the King Aeetes of Colchis. Jason did not refuse the order forwarded by Pelias, but instead assembled a fleet of heroes and warriors to help him on his journey. This group was the Argonauts.

Wild East

(Ian Hunter)

Well it's Tuesday night
How I'd like to be inside at this time
Watchin' T.V. is killin' me
It's such a drag tonight
I feel like Jason
Just found a rusty fleece
And the Cyclops all laughin' at me
You can't tame Wild East
Wild East Wild East
Wild East Wild East

Now some cynic from the methadone clinic
He keeps on bothering me
He writes all my lyrics backwards on diapers
And hangs 'em from the local trees
Watch out, white boy
Don't argue with a sawn off piece
I'm a crazy son, Mama
I love the grease of Wild East
Wild East Wild East
Wild East Wild East
Wild East Wild East
Wild East Wild East

Now Jezebel don't feel too well, she talks to Jane
'Bout a one way conversation on a subway train
Hey! They took away her wallet and her valise
Love hate, love hate, love hate, love hate, Wild East
Wild East Wild East
Wild East Wild East
Wild East Wild East
Wild East come on crazy Wild East

Wild Bunch, Ian Hunter, When I'm President

Wild Bunch is an unusual rocker of a song sounding something like the Faces might have done. The song is about an actual movie and Hunter ends the tune with maybe someone should make a movie about the Wild Bunch! The song is set in one of the favorite periods of Ian's interest, i.e., American events that transpired between 1840 and 1915. He relates the tale as if he were part of the Wild Bunch:

An' I'm playin' dead underneath a bed, listening to the bullets whine

The 1969 film was controversial because of its graphic violence and its portrayal of crude men attempting to survive by any available means. At the end of his song Ian samples the traditional Christian hymn Shall We Gather at the River? noting of course that the hymn was first employed as an ironic counterpoint during an onscreen massacre in the film.

We shall gather by the river
and beat up on the wild bunch

In contrast, Hunter reverses the use of the hymn with the motifs of the song found in Revelation 22: 1-2 as the possibility of restoration and reward for the Wild Bunch. Hunter refers in the body of the song to the characters Thornton, Pike, Mapache, Angel, and Tess.

Loosely based on the film Ian took a long movie and condensed it down to the bare bones to related the story line.

The Wild Bunch is a 1969 American epic Revisionist Western film directed by Sam Peckinpah and starring William HoldenErnest BorgnineRobert RyanEdmond O'BrienBen Johnson and Warren Oates. The plot concerns an aging outlaw gang on the Mexico–United States border trying to adapt to the changing modern world of 1913. The film was controversial because of its graphic violence and its portrayal of crude men attempting to survive by any available means.[2]

"Shall We Gather at the River?" or simply "At the River" are the popular names for the traditional Christian hymn originally titled "Beautiful River" and subsequently titled "Hanson Place," written by American poet and gospel music composer Robert Lowry (1826–1899). It was written in 1864 and is now in the public domain. The title "Hanson Place" is a reference to the original Hanson Place Baptist Church in Brooklyn, where Lowry, as a Baptist minister, sometimes served. The original building now houses a different denomination.

Wild Bunch

(Ian Hunter)

Dirty old street, dust on the feet of the temperance congregation
Hidden from view, Bobby Thornton's crew are waiting for the Wild Bunch

The hands on the clock nearly fell off in shock
When the wild bunch checked into the bank the teller's hands shook
He's too scared to look at the stain permeating his pants

Wild Bunch, ain't your rank 'n' file bunch, but they can lead you astray
Wild Bunch, slay 'em in the aisles bunch, they kinda like it that way

Out on the road, Thornton's posse in tow
Pike yells "there's nothing but junk!"
There ain't any gold, just washers full of holes
They stitched up the wild bunch

Left tumbleweed land, crossed the Rio Grande, bounty bums following us,
Meeting a man, blood all on his hands, beggars can't be choosers

Mapache's a dude with a crude attitude 'bout the Mexican revolution
His arsenal's low, so we gotta go rob a train 'n' get him some

Wild Bunch, what a juvenile bunch, penny dreadfuls gone to their heads
Wild Bunch, goin' outta style bunch, you don't mess with no feds

The passengers wept at the scale of the theft, there was gold, ammunition 'n' guns
But one little crate sealed everybody's fate 'n' put paid to the wild bunch

Angel 'n' Tess met unfortunate deaths, Mapache wasn't too far behind
An' I'm playin' dead underneath a bed, listening to the bullets whine

Wild Bunch, I kinda liked excitement, but enuff is enuff
Wild Bunch, if you're gonna walk a tightrope,
Sooner or later you're gonna fall off

Did this ever happen? Was I ever there? Most of the time I was drunk
It's a sobering thought... someone really oughta make a movie called the Wild Bunch

We shall gather by the river
We shall gather by the river
We shall gather by the river
and beat up on the wild bunch

We shall gather by the river
We shall gather by the river
We shall gather by the river

Wild Bunch meanwhile is a rocker that reminds me of The Faces.

Who Do You Love, Ian Hunter, Ian Hunter LP

This song is an infectious toe-tapper with funky Sixties-style harmonica and boogie piano. British audiences favored CBS's second single from the LP. This is a hey it's a me or him babe type of song. Hunter is asking for a decision. The lyrics mention Detroit so some speculated that it was about a DJ there but Ian has stated that this is not the case. He can't remember who it was written about. He enjoyed the groove. Hunter considers it a fabricated song with elements of truth. It appealed to a wide range of artists considering that the Pointer Sisters, Def Leppard, and Joe Elliott's Down 'n' Outs recorded versions.

There is a single edit version of Hunter's as well.

Who Do You Love

(Ian Hunter)

Driving off in the rain and snow
Oh the jets ain't jumping cause the clouds too low
I wanna know
I wanna know
I wanna know
The ice on the window the highway the sea
Who do you love is it him or is it me
Hey hey I wanna know

I called Detroit city on the telephone
The man on the line tell me you ain't home
I wanna know
Who's that voice
What's [...?]
There's a deep red glow in the early morning sky
Who do you love better make up your mind

Don't wanna buy love
Don't wanna try love
I just want your love babe

Hey alright!

Well its five in the morning and the place is dead
I'm gonna rest my body on a empty bed
Who do you love
I gotta know
What's his name baby
What's your game
Make up your mind are you his are you mine
When you get back I ask you one more time
Hey hey!
Hey hey!
