China, Tilting the Mirror, Ian Hunter, Stranded In Reality, Long Odds n' Outtakes

China could be emotional for Ian now that Mick Ronson passed but Hunter had Ronno sing it at the time because it's a trawler boat song similar to Mick's hometown of Hull. Mick is still with us.

Songs like Listen to the Eight Track do not happen often but it reminds me of Guy Stevens when he provoked a stream of consciousness groove as on I Can Feel. Hunter loves this track including the boomerang at the end.

Na Na Na, Tilting the Mirror, Ian Hunter, Stranded In Reality, Long Odds n' Outtakes Bonus CD

Na Na Na is a sax workout and a 1950s style romp inspired by Little Richard. Early in his career Hunter wrote this song which sounds ideal for the early rock 'n' roller. There were even some words created for this song and Ian says they were good. Hunter openly admires Richard by calling him the Governor, the greatest of all time, and he has the finest natural voice for rock 'n' roll. Paul Rodgers is good as well but second to Little Richard. Hunter thinks his early bands were incredible and second to none; when Jimi Hendrix was in his band he told him to cool it. Jimi went on to other famous things.

There are two versions one shorter and another longer.

If the Slipper Don't Fit, Tilting the Mirror, Ian Hunter, Stranded In Reality

If the Slipper Don't Fit is an outtake from the 1976 All American Alien Boy record which Hunter enjoyed hearing again after so many years when the box set was proposed. There was some discussion in 2015 of adding lyrics, similar to what happened with One Fine Day and Colwater High in 2005, but since Hunter rarely looks backwards, it didn't happen. Ian kept looking ahead to the next studio album. If he had written lyrics the original idea was to finish the slipper idea with `then don't put them on.' Similar to Common Disease, it was too fast for the more reflective Alien Boy release.

Common Disease, Tilting the Mirror, Ian Hunter, Stranded In Reality

Common Disease sounds cliched and as Hunter notes it was written to a formula and as a result dropped in 1976. There were rockers for the All American Alien Boy release but since they did not fit the mood of the more reflective record this is an outtake and Ian just went on to other tracks. Not surprisingly, since Hunter rarely looks backward.

Fun, (Ian Hunter/Mark Clarke/Hilly Michaels), Ian Hunter, All of the Good Ones Are Taken

Excerpt

Fun is an odd piece and is intricate, bumpy, while mixed with guitar riffs, horn sounds, and a cute spoken middle-eight. The song has a hint of desperation as we think we are supposed to having fun even though these days it is not like the enjoyable things we did it in the past. Fun may not be all that much fun after all. It seems to be a song that suggests we need to go out and have a good time even when fun may not be in the offing. Mark Clarke, bass, and Hilly Michaels, drums, get co-songwriting credit on this tune.

Fun

(Ian Hunter/Mark Clarke/Hilly Michaels)

I got a shower curtain stickin' to my back
And the o'd' cologne sure packs a whack
I got blood on my razor - my face is in shock
'N' my hair hangin' down like a Rastaman's locks

I think I'm ready - I'm gettin' ready
Gettin' ready Teddy - we're all gonna have fun

I gotta rock 'n' roll - rocket says "you gotta go fast"
'N' the radio's blarin' out a blast from the past
Lucille's in the back screamin' "gimme a break"
Your momma didn't tell you - that's the chance you take

It's oh so sad
When this love is all that we have
To swallow a lifetime away
With so many hours in each day

But calm your foolish heart
Our girlfriend's can't keep us apart
I'm with you every step of the way
Baby - what more can I say

The only problem is
I wanna party - get down - boogie - have a great time
Well its 36.50 for a room with a view
O' the empire state 'n' the pizza place, too

Lucille's got my body in a total eclipse
She's all lips 'n' hips - you know - one o' those trips
We're gettin' ready - she's gettin' ready
Gettin' ready Teddy - we're all gonna have fun

Your Way, Ian Hunter, only on the box set version of Strings Attached

Needing a new song to include Your Way was written specifically for the two Oslo shows in 2002 from Strings Attached but it is a song that really fell through the cracks. It was not included on the album because producer Andy York and Hunter were not keen on the performance. Later, upon reflection, they both wondered why they didn't include it. One reservation was that `do it your way,' could be compared to a song popularized in 1969 by Frank Sinatra and written by Paul Anka: My Way. Nonetheless, they seem unrelated and the song is just about the most positive and upbeat song that Hunter has ever written. It is an affirmation of the uniqueness of people, the gifts we all have, think for yourself, and put the past behind you.

The song is available only on the box set version of Strings Attached

Ian Hunter On Track for Sonicbond Publising, The DoctorOfDigital@pm.me

"My Way" is a song popularized in 1969 by Frank Sinatra set to the music of the French song "Comme d'habitude" composed by Jacques Revaux with lyrics by Gilles Thibaut and Claude François[1][2] and first performed in 1967 by Claude François. Its English lyrics were written by Paul Anka and are unrelated to the original French song.

The song was a success for a variety of performers including Sinatra, Elvis Presley, and Sid Vicious. Sinatra's version of "My Way" spent 75 weeks in the UK Top 40, which is 3rd place all-time.

Your Eyes, Ian Hunter, bonus EP with initial copies of Shrunken Heads

Your Eyes was included in the bonus EP with initial copies of Shrunken Heads. This sounds like a love song but from a much different angle than the usual. Hunter wonders if he could see the world through the other's eyes. It would be fantastic to understand what the other sees. It's like saying I could be more positive and optimistic then.

Wouldn't it be wild?
Wouldn't it be wonderful?

It will never happen but it would certainly turn my entire world around he seems to be saying. Hunter expresses a sentiment that many people share and wish they could see the world differently from the perspective of someone else that they love.

Ian Hunter On Track for Sonicbond Publishing, TheDoctorOfDigital@pm.me

Your Eyes*

(Ian Hunter)

Baby baby the things you do
You make me wonder what's going on inside of you
Mother Nature's sweeter sex
I never know what you're gonna do next

If I could only see the world through your eyes
It would be a brighter place
If I could only see the world through your eyes
Wouldn't it be wild?
Wouldn't it be wonderful?

Ooh baby baby we're different
I don't deny the fact that you are heaven sent
I know that you're there for me
You care for me in my winters of discontent

If I could only see the world through your eyes
It would be a brighter place
If I could only see the world through your eyes
Wouldn't it be weird?
Wouldn't it be wonderful?

If I could only see the world through your eyes
Oh yeah, oh yeah
If I could only see the world through your eyes
Oh yeah, oh yeah

Never the twain shall meet
It's kinda like losing your mind or your mystique
So I stagger on through the night
Like a sore child, following your bright lights

If I could only see the world through your eyes
It would be a sweeter place, yeah
If I could only see the world through your eyes
Wouldn't it be wild?
Wouldn't it be wonderful?
Oh yeah

If I could only, if I could only
If I could only see the world through your eyes
If I could only, if I could only
If I could only see the world through your eyes
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
See the world through your eyes
Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah
See the world through your eyes

You Stepped Into My Dreams, Ian Hunter, Long Odds and Outtakes, from Short Back n' Sides

You Stepped Into My Dreams is pretty good and a just miss for inclusion on the album. In a way this song is similar to Arms and Legs since despite the strong feeling of love this might be about the one that got away. The guy is leaving since:

We both gotta be moving on

Sometimes you see a lover and she's made for love
But you let that lover slip by
You believe and yet she's so hard to get
And you never know the reasons why

He is clearly enamored but he's getting on a plane maybe never to return although she stepped into his dreams.

Ian Hunter On Track for Sonicbond Publishing, TheDoctorOfDigital@pm.me

You Stepped Into My Dreams

(Ian Hunter)

That's it baby, take one last look
We gotta go catch a plane
Then you won't die, and I won't die
But we won't ever be the same

Oh I can feel a mood coming down on me
Such a good thing disappears
I can sense the loss creeping up on us
And it's deeper than any tears I've known

You stepped into my dreams
You opened up the door
You stepped into my dreams
I want you back for more

You stepped into my dreams tonight

In the shadows of the night you saw me
In the morning you were gone
Won't you blow a kiss to me baby
We both gotta be moving on

Sometimes you see a lover and she's made for love
But you let that lover slip by
You believe and yet she's so hard to get
And you never know the reasons why

She stepped into your dreams
She opened up your door
She stepped into your dreams
You want her so much more

She stepped into your dreams tonight yeah

Oh when you're doing what you're doing
What do you think of me babe
There ain't much else to say
In another time, in another place
Things might have turned out okay

I can feel a darkness I can never conceal
Sometimes I get just a little insane
I can feel emotions like the mighty oceans
They're driving me again, and I know

You stepped into my dreams
You opened up the door
You stepped into my dreams
I want you back for more

You stepped into my dreams
And I don't know what to do
I'm so scared of losing you.

You Stepped Into My Dreams4:41Originally released on the outtakes CD Long Odds and Outtakes. It is also on the compilation From The Knees Of My Heart and on Tilting The Mirror - Rarities (box set only). The version on Tilting The Mirror omits the count-in at the start, and so is a few seconds shorter (4:37).

You Can't Live In The Past, Ian Hunter, Fingers Crossed

From his song output alone we can grasp that Hunter does not live in the past and he is always looking forward which is the subject of You Can't Live In The Past applied to an even more critical situation. This song is replete with references and is a sidelined attack on the futility of war; a theme he has explored more directly elsewhere. "Sally Army" is British informal short for the Salvation Army which is a Christian body founded in 1865 organized on quasi-military lines for evangelism and social work among poor people. Not surprisingly, singing Hark! The Herald Angels Sing, the English Christmas carol from 1739, near the "Hope n Anchor," a pub on Upper Street in the London Borough of Islington, which opened in 1880 and during the mid-1970s actually a home to pub rock and punk rock. "Vera" is a reference to Dame Vera Margaret Lynn the English singer and entertainer whose musical recordings and performances were very popular during World War II. The scene is arranged for "that little yellow envelope" or the notice from the front that the soldier was killed. Ian sings:

Kiss the toothbrush, kiss the razor
Light the gas and leave it on
Fall asleep upon the sofa
Quietly die inside his ragged uniform
Hunter is saying you have to move on even when a loved one is dead. This is a painful, powerful, and nonetheless, true sentiment.

Ian Hunter On Track for Sonicbond Publishing, TheDoctorOfDigital@pm.me

British informal short for Salvation Army Christian body founded in 1865 by William Booth and organized on quasi-military lines for evangelism and social work among poor people

Hope and Anchor is a pub on Upper Street, in the London Borough of Islington which first opened its doors in 1880. During the mid-1970s it was one of the first pubs to embrace the emergent, but brief, phenomenon of pub rock. With the decline of this movement, the pub went on to become a leading venue in the punk rockmovement. Hope and Anchor is still an operational pub and live music venue today, owned and operated by the Greene King brewing company. It is a Grade II listed building.[1]

"Hark! The Herald Angels Sing" is an English Christmas carol that first appeared in 1739 in the collection Hymns and Sacred Poems. The carol, based on Luke 2:14, tells of an angelic chorus singing praises to God. As it is known in the modern era, it features lyrical contributions from Charles Wesley and George Whitefield, two of the founding ministers of Methodism, with music adapted from "Vaterland, in deinen Gauen" from Felix Mendelssohn's cantata Festgesang.

Dame Vera Margaret Lynn CH DBE OStJ (née Welch; 20 March 1917 – 18 June 2020) was an English singer and entertainer whose musical recordings and performances were very popular during World War II. She is honorifically known as the "Forces' Sweetheart", having given outdoor concerts for the troops in EgyptIndiaand Burma during the war as part of the Entertainments National Service Association (ENSA). The songs most associated with her include "We'll Meet Again", "(There'll Be Bluebirds Over) The White Cliffs of Dover", "A Nightingale Sang in Berkeley Square" and "There'll Always Be an England".

You Can't Live In The Past

(Ian Hunter)

Sally Army on the corner,
Hope n Anchor, closing time
I watched you stagger I watched you reelin'
I watched you slowly leaving this world behind

Hark the herald angels singin'
On the street there's little hope
People all scared to see the postman
On the doorstep with that little yellow envelope

I can't help you with anything if you can't help yourself
I can't pull you out of this if you wanna be somewhere else

You can never go back, you can never go back
Yesterday's gone, you've gotta move on
You can't live in the past

When you're lost in the rain
Try not to go there again
And Vera sings that same old song
On and on and on and on and on

Kiss the toothbrush, kiss the razor
Light the gas and leave it on
Fall asleep upon the sofa
Quietly die inside his ragged uniform

I can't give you anything if you can't give yourself
I can't get you out of this if you wanna be somewhere else

You can never go back, you can never go back
Those days are gone, you gotta move on
You can't live in the past

And all things bright and beautiful
This house was always full of people
Holdin' hands and making plans, wedding bells were gonna chime
But I don't think I'll ever really understand man's inhumanity to man

Sally army on the corner
Hearse and mourners all in line
Empty glasses, empty ashtrays
Pull the blinds down gov'ner 'cos it's closing time

You can never go back
You can never go back
Those days are gone, you gotta move on
You can't live in the past
When you're lost in the rain
Try not to go there again
And Vera sings that same old song
On and on and on and on...

Ian has always had his feet planted firmly in reality, as on You Can't Live In The Past he notes "You can never go back, those days are gone".

Words (Big Mouth), (Lyrics by Ian Hunter, Music by Ian Hunter and Andy York) Ian Hunter, Shrunken Heads

The opening track Words (Big Mouth) is an arresting start to the CD. Hunter apologizes, to Trudi, for mouthing off the night before. He has a big one, mouth that is, and he's sorry. What a combination, Winston Churchill's disease of manic-depression, the "Black Dog: coupled with alcohol and out it comes:

Black Dog lurking in the alleyway
Alcohol arriving with the key
Open up the floodgates and out it comes
Like a river full of graffiti

They spill out:

Words... Nasty little lizards...
Grammatical bacteria

These "cruel little clusters" are powerful images and a graphic description unleashed by saying the wrong things. The Hunters go to Rick and Steffie Tedesco's house in Connecticut once a week and when inebriated the mood can get ugly.

There are two live versions from 2007 and 2010.

Ian Hunter On Track for Sonicbond Publishing, TheDoctorOfDigital@pm.me

disease of manic-depression

Words (Big Mouth)

(Lyrics by Ian Hunter, Music by Ian Hunter and Andy York)

[Spoken] I got a big one
It's me, I didn't mean to wake you
I owe you an apology about last night
Well I was just letting off steam
Black Dog lurking in the alleyway
Alcohol arriving with the key
Open up the floodgates and out it comes
Like a river full of graffiti

Words... little beads of poison
Letting out the venom
One thing for certain baby
I got a big mouth

I'll change... I promise you, I'm gonna change
I gotta turn a new leaf
And this will be the very last time
I put my foot in it
Black Dog putting these words in my mouth
Well don't take any notice of them
I don't mean to vent my spleen
I hate it when that happens

Just words... cruel little clusters
Maiming the vernacular
One thing for certain baby
I got a big mouth, I got a big mouth

Don't leave... I'm beggin' you please don't leave
These words are only make believe
You can take 'em with a grain of salt
Words can eat a man alive

Black Dog rotting in some broken bar
Handclaps rattling my bones
Hound dogs fading into wilderness
And I just wanna come home

Words... Nasty little lizards...
Grammatical bacteria
One thing's for certain baby
I got a big mouth, I got a big mouth
I got a big mouth, yeah

Just words
I'm getting on your nerves
Little shops of horrors
I got a big mouth

Yakity Yakity Yakity Yak...

There are some astonishingly good tracks on here. Words (Big Mouth) opens things up nicely where Ian apologises to a loved one for mouthing off the night before

Women's Intuition, Ian Hunter, YUI Orta

The Slimmer Twins wrote Women's Intuition together and it was one of the last tracks for the album. It sounds similar to The Rolling Stones as if they were still performing compelling music. This is a song similar to Bastard in that it sounds realistic and what being a relationship can be like. The woman is like Judas and used synonymously with betrayal as he was the disciple who betrayed Jesus to the Sanhedrin in the Garden of Gethsemane by kissing him on the cheek  to reveal his identity for arrest. A women involved with a musician is always whining yet:

I gave you-the best years of-your miserable life

The woman went wrong somewhere but should listen to her women's intuition or she will end up on her ass. The song is about Mick Ronson and Hunter writing about women who want to break up a band or keep a musician from the music. Men and women need to work it out: aggression vs. possession. Bernard Edwards played bass.

There is a single edit version and live version from 1989.

Also recorded at The Cabaret, San Jose CA 16th December 1989 and is on Missing In Action.

Ian Hunter On Track for Sonicbond Publishing, TheDoctorOfDigital@pm.me

Judas betrayed Jesus to the Sanhedrin in the Garden of Gethsemane by kissing him on the cheek and addressing him as "master" to reveal his identity in the darkness to the crowd who had come to arrest him.[2] His name is often used synonymously with betrayal or treason.

Women's Intuition

(Ian Hunter)

Through the haze the mirror cries-hits you right between the eyes
You don't know-but you got the judas in you babe
You can't trust
You can't deliver
Always whinin' you were sold down the river
I gave you-the best years of-your miserable life

Where did you go wrong girl, where did you go wrong
Where did you go wrong babe-nice try, wrong guy
You're gonna wind up on your ass-you should have listened to your
WOMEN'S INTUITION

You can come (run)-but you can't hide-something messed you up inside
Ain't my fault-don't blame me-if you're dazed and confused
You're a lie, you're a television, tryin't drag into your prison
Had enough o'sleepin' rough-its over with you

where did you go wrong babe
Where did you go wrong
Where did you go wrong girl
Nice try
Goodbye
You're gonna wind up on your ass-you should;ve listened to your
WOMEN'S INTUITION

Tarred by the same old feathers-guess we got to stick together
But I say to you-don't ever invade-my destiny
Bad enough I ain't normal, give up tryin't make me formal
What I need when I bleed
Don't mean nothing to you

Where did you go wrong babe, where did you go wrong
Where did you go wrong girl
Dumb moves, no class
You're gonna wind up on your ass-you should 've listened to your

(Give Me Back My) Wings, Ian Hunter, Originally demoed for YUI Orta; this live version (recorded The Dominion, London England) was released on BBC Live in Concert

Hunter began working with John Jansen in 1987 but (Give Me Back My) Wings is a song that fell through the cracks; it was demoed and was the first song proposed for YUI Orta but it didn't make the cut; it was released as a live version from 1989. The theme is mysterious and as lofty as the existence of God as in the song God (Take 1). Here in order to have wings Hunter says:

First it was the Mothers
Then it was the wives
I think that God's a woman
I know she runs my life
And she can still
Oh and I wonder when

It is a reflective track and Hunter is considering how much he owes his family. The persona of Ian Hunter rock star results in drama at times but this is an acknowledgement of how much he owes others and a higher power.

Robbie Alter lived next to Ian in NYC and put an amazing sound down on guitar. Originally it was a ballad with Alter but David Letterman's drummer, Anton Figg came to Hunter's house in Katonah and rearranged the song. Producer Bernard Edwards nixed it for YUI Orta so it didn't fit. Live the song was done with Mick Ronson on his Telecaster and since Hunter rarely looks back the song was just dropped from a regular release but he likes it. Live the song was a showcase for the young Pat Kilbride who just kicks on this track.

(Give Me Back My) Wings

(Ian Hunter)

Give me back my wings
You know I have to fly high
If the bird cannot sing
Then his spirit will die

I never said I was right
You can't explain some things
Just give me back my wings
You know I have to reach higher
If the bird cannot soar
Then he loses desire

I never said it was fair
You can't explain some things
Just give me back my wings
Give me back my wings

First it was the Mothers
Then it was the wives
I think that God's a woman
I know she runs my life
And she can still
Oh and I wonder when

Just give me back my wings
You know I have to go higher
If the bird cannot soar Then he loses desire

I never said I was right
You can't explain some things
Just give me back my wings
Give me back my wings
