Obama: Surge Succeeded, Talk with Taliban, Defeated in Afghanistan

Obama admitted in an interview published in the New York Times that the United States was opening a door to a reconciliation process in which the American military would reach out to moderate elements of the Taliban, much as it did with Sunni militias in Iraq. Obama is mirroring the successful surge strategy of Petraeus in Iraq.

Was that an admission that the surge worked?

Without stating it so baldly that is what it is.

Asked if the United States was winning in Afghanistan, a war he effectively adopted as his own last month by ordering an additional 17,000 troops sent there, Obama replied flatly, “No.”
