WVA high school's mandate: students stand for 'African-American National Anthem'

Capital High School morning observance policy gets changed. "Lift Every Voice and Sing" is considered the African-American National Anthem. What nation is African-American? Students will no longer be required to stand for the playing of the national anthem, pledge or anything else played over the loudspeaker during morning observances. The school is adding the words "or sit" to its policy regarding student participation during the Pledge of Allegiance. The policy will now read, "during the Pledge, nonparticipating students are expected to stand or sit silently and are not to engage in any disrupting or distracting activity."

How offensive is this policy? You can be disrespectful to the American national anthem by objecting to it by sitting down and yet this is considered the solution. Nonparticipating students have to be cautioned against disruptive activity during the national anthem.

The policy allows disrespect during the National Anthem and an issue only arose when some students refused to stand up for the optional "African-American National Anthem," whatever that could be since African-American is not a nation but an ethnic group. The school is bending over backwards to be politically correct.
