Hunter has produced a significant body of work thus there is quite a bit to be reviewed as this is the first track by track book ever on his artistry. The series is designed to provide a contrast between solid, factual information and critical analysis. The author is a life-long fan and I make no bones about my subjective opinions which are balanced by my academic training. I hope to balance these two critical components into a compelling story about who I consider to be the best representative of classic rock based on the fact that Ian heard the early rock and rollers and was on the scene in Germany similar to the Beatles; moreover, he had his fifteen moments of fame in his first genuine rock band, then a second part of his career he teamed up with one of the best guitarists of the classic rock era, and finally, he produced yet a third period of high quality works that extended the rock genre beyond classic rock. I am overwhelmingly positive about Hunter's music.
My discussion of live performance are to note the variations in arrangements as Hunter gets bored with doing songs the same way time after time. The writing credits are important and he mostly written by himself during his solo career however he has written for and with other artists and they are noted as well. You can enjoy the studio versions and live alternatives are noted especially with the Stranded In Reality massive box set as accompaniment.
Every artist has peaks and troughs, but part of the ethos of the On Track series is to treat every album with respect. Poor or unsuccessful albums are discussed in the same way as good ones and with Hunter this is actually an important point because some of his work indicated a later direction that he will return to, anticipate with a mature work, or will revise in his live recordings.
Due to Hunter's chronic issues with labels, management, and the music business bonus tracks and demos are important and they provide genuine insight into his canon. Numerous songs Ian has noted could have been on the original albums but they didn't fit the theme of the current album and some of his demos, by his own admission, are among his best works.
I am striking a balance between the discussion of Hunter's music and lyrics. Although I am not bogged down in too much analysis of lyrical content kindly note that the artist is an exceptionally well read individual. Hunter is not an intellectual but indeed is an intelligent individual who makes numerous historical, literary, and cultural allusions. The point of my discussion is to provide the reader with a greater appreciation of Hunter's music. You will hear the author's intellectual voice in the book acknowledging Hunter's intelligent range of thought.
This book will set out Hunter's work in context and give a brief history as appropriate, discussing overall changes in musical style. I will discuss the musical direction of each album and song, its success, line up changes, and critical reception.
Here is the way to proceed. Each chapter stands alone thus you can be entertained, educated, and jump in and out at any point of musical direction. Finally, the next step if you have not joined already, is to find a community of Ian Hunter aficionados if not in person then online. Welcome!
