Rerum Novarum: On the Condition of the Working Classes
Main points: Promotion of human dignity through just distribution of wealth. Present inequality creates a decline of morality as shown in alcohol consumption, prostitution, and divorce. Workers have basic human rights that adhere to Natural Law, which says all humans are equal. Rights include the right to work, to own private property, to receive a just wage, and to organize into workers' associations. Employers and employees each have rights and responsibilities: while the worker should not riot to create a situation of conflict with the employer, the employer should maintain an environment respecting worker's dignity.
The church has the right to speak out on social issues. Its role is to teach social principles and bring social classes together. The state's role is to create a just society through laws that preserve rights.
Context: Much poverty. Because of the Industrial Revolution, workers are being exploited by profit-hungry employers. Public authorities are not protecting the rights of the poor.
The Industrial Revolution brought many concerns about the deteriorating working and living conditions of urban workers. Influenced by the German Bishop Wilhelm Emmanuel Freiherr von Ketteler, in 1891 Pope Leo XIII published the encyclical Rerum Novarum, subtitled "On Capital and Labor". This encyclical set in context Catholic social teaching in terms that rejected socialism but advocated the regulation of working conditions. Rerum Novarum argued for the establishment of a living wage and the right of workers to form trade unions.
In Rerum Novarum, Leo set out the Catholic Church's response to the social instability and labor conflict that had arisen in the wake of industrialization and had led to the rise of socialism. The Pope taught that the role of the State is to promote social justice through the protection of rights, while the Church must speak out on social issues in order to teach correct social principles and ensure class harmony. He restated the Church's long-standing teaching regarding the crucial importance of private property rights, but recognized, in one of the best-known passages of the encyclical, that the free operation of market forces must be tempered by moral considerations:
Let the working man and the employer make free agreements, and in particular let them agree freely as to the wages; nevertheless, there underlies a dictate of natural justice more imperious and ancient than any bargain between man and man, namely, that wages ought not to be insufficient to support a frugal and well-behaved wage-earner. If through necessity or fear of a worse evil the workman accept harder conditions because an employer or contractor will afford him no better, he is made the victim of force and injustice.

Among the remedies it prescribed were the formation of trade unions and the introduction of collective bargaining, particularly as an alternative to state intervention. Libyan False Flag Operation: Intelligence officials accuse Obama of 'cover-up' in Libya
Lt. Col. Wood has told CBS News and congressional investigators that his 16-member team and a six-member State Department elite force called a Mobile Security Deployment team left Libya in August, just one month before the Benghazi assault. Wood says that's despite the fact that US officials in Libya wanted security increased, not decreased.
Intelligence officials say the Office of the Director of National Intelligence's false information was either knowingly disseminated or was directed to be put out by senior policy officials for political reasons, since the statement was contradicted by numerous intelligence reports at the time of the attack indicating it was al Qaeda-related terrorism.
Yet the Obama administration sought to keep the information from becoming public to avoid exposing what the officials say is a Middle East policy failure by Obama.
Officials said that the administration appeared to engage in a disinformation campaign aimed at distancing the president personally during the peak of the presidential election campaign from the disaster in Benghazi, where numerous warning of an attack were ignored, resulting in the deaths of U.S. Ambassador to Libya Christopher Stevens and three other officials.
The first part of the apparent campaign, officials said, was the false information provided to U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice, who appeared on five Sunday television shows after the attack to say the event was a “spontaneous” response to an anti-Muslim video trailer posted online.
Officials said Rice was given the false information to use in media appearances in order to promote the excuse that the obscure video was the cause of the attack, and not the Islamic concept of jihad.
White House Press Secretary Jay Carney repeated the false assessment of the Benghazi attack.
The final element of the campaign involved comments by Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who was the first to give a partial explanation of the intelligence when she said al Qaeda terrorists operating from Mali were possible culprits in the Benghazi attack.
The terrorist group behind the 9/11 attacks is now flourishing under the Muslim Brotherhood regime of Mohamed Morsi.
Egypt was among the locations of Obama’s 2009 “apology” tour, when he criticized past U.S. policies based on what he said was “fear and anger” that prompted actions “contrary to our ideals.” He also promised “a new beginning” for the U.S. and the world’s Muslims and a radical shift in U.S. policy.
JACK WELCH REFUSES TO BACK DOWN ON UNEMPLOYMENT NUMBERS IN FIERY EXCHANGE WITH CHRIS MATTHEWS
“We had 600,000 government jobs added in the last two months. We had 873,00 jobs by a household survey — which is a total estimate — from 50,000 phone calls. Of those, 600,000 were temporary workers. Chris, these numbers are all a series of assumptions. Tons of assumptions. And it just seems somewhat coincidental that the month before the election, the numbers go one-tenth of a point below where the president started. Although, I don’t see anything in the economy that says these surges are true.”
“I have no evidence to prove that, I just raise the question,” he said.
“But you didn’t raise the question,” Matthews shot back.
“Did you talk to any economist or any people in the national income accounting world that understood how these numbers are put together before you accuse these ‘Chicago guys’ of changing the numbers?” the host asked.
Welch then repeated his position that the unemployment numbers were generated based on a “series of wild assumptions.”
Matthews then asked if he wanted to take back his accusation that the numbers were intentionally fudged.
“No,” Welch said defiantly. As Matthews grew frustrated with his guests defiance, he accused Welch of irresponsibly alleging wrongdoing by the president of the United States without probable cause. At this, Welch laughed — literally.
“It’s not funny, Jack…You’re talking about the President of the United States playing with the Bureau of Labor Statistics’ numbers. This is Nixon stuff. This is what Nixon said back in the old days,” Matthews said.
“Chris, don’t lose it now,” Welch said.
“I’m not losing it. Look at my face. I’m not losing it,” Matthews said.
“Jack, do you want to take back the charge that there was corruption here,” Matthews asked again, getting the same answer.
“You don’t think it’s coincidental that we’ve got the biggest surge since 1983 in the jobs surge? Come on, Chris,” Welch said, refusing to back down. “It’s a six percent improvement in employment in two months…The numbers don’t jibe.”
He continued: “These numbers defy logic. They defy logic. We do not have a 4 to 5 percent booming economy with 873,000 people added. I mean, stop it, Chris. On the face of it, we don’t have this GDP. I love you, but you can’t get there.”
Matthews tried one more time to get Welch to walk his statement back, but it was useless. However, the guest did admit again that he has no “evidence whatsoever” of “corruption.”
Welch said he was just “raising the question for some good analysts to go look at.”

Obama mocks financial success as ‘blind luck’
A recent video from 2005 has surfaced in which Obama claims that Americans in the private sector who have achieved financial success is due to ‘blind luck’ and a ‘generation of women doing someone else’s laundry and looking after someone else’s children to get you here.’
These statements came on September 17, 2005 at the Harvard Law School Association ‘Celebration of Black Alumni’ Award Luncheon.
He also argued, as he does now that government should play a larger role in health care, retirement and national infrastructure.
In referring to the free-market system, Obama said ‘the other side has an easier job because their argument is essentially what is, you know, labeled the ownership society is actually pretty easily articulated. It says, ‘We are all in it by ourselves….’

Franklin Delano Roosevelt, Jr. (August 17, 1914 -- August 17, 1988) was an American politician. He was the fifth child of U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, Sr. and his wife Eleanor.
He was a Naval officer in World War II and was decorated for bravery in the battle of Casablanca.
He graduated from Groton School in 1933, Harvard University in 1937, and from the University of Virginia School of Law in June 1940. During his graduation, his father, Franklin D. Roosevelt gave what is known as the "Stab in the Back" Speech, criticizing Italy's entry into the war.
Roosevelt Jr. served as a member of the United States Congress, representing the 20th District of New York from 1949 to 1955. In 1949, he won a special election running as a candidate of the Liberal Party of New York and later ran on the Democratic ticket as well.
He sought the Democratic nomination for Governor in 1954, but, after persuasion by powerful Tammany Hall boss Carmine DeSapio, abandoned his bid for Governor was nominated by the Democratic State Convention to run for New York State Attorney General. Roosevelt was defeated in the general election by Republican Jacob K. Javits, although all other Democratic nominees were elected. Following his loss, Eleanor Roosevelt began building a campaign against the Tammany Hall leader that eventually forced DeSapio to step down from power in 1961.
He campaigned for John F. Kennedy in the 1960 West Virginia primary, falsely accusing Kennedy's opponent, Hubert Humphrey of having dodged the draft in World War II. Kennedy later named him Under-Secretary of Commerce and chairman of the President's Appalachian Regional Commission. This post (Under-Secretary of Commerce) was given to him when Defense Secretary Robert McNamara shot down the proposal of his appointment as Secretary of Navy.
He ran for Governor of New York on the Liberal Party ticket in 1966, but was defeated by the incumbent Republican Nelson A. Rockefeller.
He served as chairman of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission from May 26, 1965 to May 11, 1966.
He was senior partner in the New York law firm of Roosevelt and Freiden before and after his service in the Congress.
He also ran a small cattle farm and imported Fiat automobiles. (He was a personal friend of Fiat chairman Gianni Agnelli).

Labor Numbers, What a surprise: Chicago style numbers fudging
In the month just previous to a contested election the unemployment figure, unchanged for 43 months, drops dramatically.
What is mysterious is the fact that there is the divergence in the two surveys done by the Labor Department.
The Household Survey showed a gain of 873,000 people employed in September - resulting in the surprise drop in the unemployment rate - while the Establishment Survey only showed a rise of 114,000.
The total employment figure is the highest one-month jump in 29 years.
I guess we are expected to believe that in one month people suddenly all found jobs.
At least two economists at the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS) have contributed to Obama’s campaign. Harley Frazis of Bethesda, MD, has contributed at least $2,000 to Obama and $9,000 to the Democratic National Convention over the last three election cycles. Stephen Phillips of Washington, D.C., has contributed at least $270 to Obama during the 2012 cycle.
The broader U-6 rate — which takes into account part-time workers who want full-time work and lots of discouraged workers who have given up looking — stayed unchanged at 14.7%.

Prior to viability, the problem is that this potential life is inside someone else’s body. It’s inside a woman’s body. And I don’t feel that it is appropriate for me to simply dictate to that person, to that woman what she should do with her body.

TSA Confiscates Camera, Deletes Footage of Checkpoint
TSA workers steal memory card, cop claims “It must have fallen on the ground”
Tom McCormack explains how he was repeatedly harassed by TSA officers and then police simply for filming at a body scanner checkpoint, before TSA agents violently grabbed his camera from him and disappeared, a concerning development given the fact that TSA workers are routinely caught stealing expensive personal items belonging to travelers.

I was in the San Juan airport at noon (Sept 24) heading for St. Kitts.
I videotaped (Canon Power Shot) the podium where they make you show the passport/boarding pass, as I approached and then the next area with the X-ray scanners. It was busy. One TSA woman told me to stop from about 20 feet away. I didn’t.
They all seemed intrigued I wouldn’t follow their orders. A TSA guy soon approached me and said I had to stop. I kept the video going and said
“Sorry, it’s a Constitutional right.” He said “Okay” and walked back, a little indignant, to the X ray area.
When I went through X rays they were waiting for me. Two uptight TSA ladies rolled up on a cart and approached me. I grabbed my camera and started rolling; I wanted to capture the conversation with them.
One of them approached me and violently ripped the camera from my hands. I was shocked and told her to give it back and lunged for my camera. They took my camera and passport and boarding pass and ran off to some corner to confer with one another.
A police officer approached and asked where I was from. I said California. The conversation went like this:
Me: “I’m from California. Why?”
Him: “Well, each State has its own rules.”
Me: “But this is TSA. A Federal agency. Therefore the State laws don’t apply. Besides, the First Amendment of the Constitution trumps state rules.”
Him: “This is an airport. You can’t just videotape people. You need permission.”
Me : “Nonsense, this is a public arena. There is not permission required or any expectation of privacy here.”
Him: “No, Puerto Rico is not like the States. There are local laws that have nothing to do with the way they do things in the States.”
Me: “Look, let’s just agree to disagree. I don’t accept anything you say. I want my camera back. See stole it. I want her to give it back right now.”
Him: “She didn’t steal it. She just confiscated it because you violated the rules.”
The TSA lady reappeared with my camera, passport, boarding pass. I took it and started to walk away (pissed off) when I noticed the camera would not go on. I looked at the cartridge slot and it was gone. They had stolen it!
I showed the cop and said, “Look I want my cartridge (with 200 or so personal photos) back or I’ll call a lawyer and 911 to get more cops.
This is outrageous!” He seemed to be aware I was getting upset and the TSA ladies scurried off with the cop and came back 2 minutes later with the cartridge.
“It must have fallen on the ground” said the cop.
Yeah, right. Predictably all the videos of them giving me a hard time were deleted. The whole episode lasted about 10 minutes.

In May 1973 I auditioned for MOTT THE HOOPLE as piano player. They had a huge hit in 1972 with David Bowie's song All The Young Dudes and, following the release of their 1973 album Mott and the departure of organist Verden Allen, they were about to take on a piano-player and a Hammond organist to promote their new album. I didn't get the piano job - it quite rightly went to Morgan Fisher. But a couple of days later Stan Tippins the band's manager phoned to ask if I could play Hammond organ. When I answered yes I was told I had got the job.
Our first rehearsal was on June 15th in London and on July 27th we began a 42-date headlining US tour at the Aragon Ballroom in Chicago with REO Speedwagon and Joe Walsh as support acts. The US and UK tours were virtual sell outs and we played some memorable concerts with some great support acts:-
- The Felt Forum, Madison Square Gardens, New York City supported by the New York Dolls
- Kennedy Centre, Washington D.C supported by Iggy Pop
- two nights at Bill Graham's Winterland, San Francisco
- two shows at the Schubert Theatre, Philadelphia supported by Aerosmith
- Hollywood Palladium supported by Blue Oyster Cult and Joe Walsh
- Spectrum, Philadelphia in front of 14,000.
- Radio City Music Hall, New York City
There were several TV appearances:- a show for ABC in NY City with Uriah Heep - a Midnight Special recorded in Los Angeles with Earth Wind and Fire and also a Don Kirschner Show, also recorded in Los Angeles. Four clips from the Don Kirschner Show can now be seen on YouTube. I can be heard on two of them - All The Young Dudes and Sweet Angeline - they show guitarist Ariel Bender in great form on only his second performance with the band.

I believe they played all of side one from Tyranny and Mvtation along with COF, Before the Kiss, A Redcap, either Workshops or Transmaniacon(???) and a rolling stones cover of It's Not Easy. This would be very close to the actual set-list that night.
As for Mott the Hoople - Mick Ralphs had just left the band prior to that gig and lots of people were shouting where's Mick during the show that evening. He had just been replaced by very short notice with one Aerial Bender on guitar.

FEW GROUPS in recent memory have had as successful a California debut performance as Blue Oyster Cult's here this September. Third-billed to Joe Walsh and Mott the Hoople, BOC stole the show musically and elicited an extremely enthusiastic crowd response that was equal to that for the two more popular groups.
The surprising thing is, the crowd was with the Cult from the start. Yells for Manny Bloom and specific Cult songs filled the air. Astute as you'd expect them to be, BOC's set list answered with the first three cuts from Tyranny And Mutation and the crowd was on their feet from the start.
Visually, the group's focal point was Manny Bloom (the guy with the frizzy hair, glasses, and greaser black leather), strutting around the stage with his red Gibson SG like a John Kay Honcho - totally jive but totally alive. The Cult's stage act is impeccably professional, flowing from one highlight to another without a letup, essentially the same stage presentation (although with different material) that the group spent two months in seclusion working up in early 1971.
Highlights of the Oyster Cult's 45-minute set included the thunderous 'Cities On Flame', 'Buck's Boogie', and an extended rendition of the Stones' 'It's Not Easy' replete with quotes from 'Born In Chicago', 'Land Of A Thousand Dances', and 'Walking The Dog'. Not since the Flamin' Groovies has a group walked the dog, much less their guitars across stage! 'Born To Be Wild' was the encore as usual, Manny Bloom and Buck Dharma crossing their guitars above their heads in a sonic blitzkrieg. The music rumbled on, Alan Lanier's skill on rhythm guitar making the Cult one of the few groups around with an awesome four guitar lineup (drummer Albert Bouchard also plays guitar) when they want it.
No doubt about it, Blue Oyster Cult slayed the crowd as well as this fan, and Joe Walsh's interminable 60-minute Grand-Funk-gone-bad tuneup jam and Mott The Hoople's vaguely disappointing set of English arrogance (lots of fans upfront yelling "where's Mick?" at Ariel Bender's fucked up guitar playing) were pretty much an anticlimax (although Mott finally drew big response towards the end of their set and several of the editors of this magazine insist they were great).
With a live show this impressive, it seems highly possible that Blue Oyster Cult will break big within the next year or two, joining the handful of fellow heavy metal groups at the top of the charts. BOC have had good success so far, selling over 100,000 with both albums already, but potentially they have the ingredients to go far beyond that, all the way to solid gold.
Asked for the reasons and the roots behind the Blue Oyster Cult's brand of metal mania, manager Sandy Pearlman (who is to the BOC something of what Andrew Loog Oldham was to the Stones) summed it up succinctly: "A technical attitude from the Yardbirds, and Ideas from the Doors". That's a pretty cerebral combination, probably the reason for an extreme musical calculation that is BOC's one major shortcoming, but otherwise it works out just fine. R. Meltzer wasn't in California, and hence unavailable for comment on Mr. Pearlman's analysis ("It was a good gig - just like Chicago!"), but I have the feeling he'd agree. This group looks like a big one.

On February 16, 2011, Navistar announced that McChrystal would join its board of directors. GEN McChrystal is currently a Partner and co-founder at the McChrystalGroup, a leadership solutions firm. Islamists vs. Civilization
In 1952, the Supreme Court of the United States finally put blasphemy prosecutions to rest in Burstyn v. Wilson, holding in a unanimous decision that "it is not the business of government in our nation to suppress real or imagined attacks upon a particular religious doctrine" or to protect "any or all religions from views which are distasteful to them." The First Amendment, the Court declared, renders any such government action unconstitutional. Religions and religious figures, like political parties, politicians, businessmen, and other members of society are fair game for criticism, condemnation and even mockery."
Apply this to the chaotic battle against Islamist savages, and the implications are obvious. If we punish American citizens for engaging in otherwise constitutionally protected speech in order to prevent Islamists from engaging in violent acts, then we cede to those very terrorists the meaning of the First Amendment.

Holley, a recent inductee into the Blues Hall of Fame, talks about recording Ian Hunter's new album, "When I'm President," in only three days, with most of it done live in the studio.
He digs playing with Ian Hunter, "He is one of the greats." They get along so well that Hunter has to approve any other acts that Holley works with, from Dar Williams to Joe Cocker.
Holly talks drummer to drummer with Cool Cleveland about the skills a superstar drummer has to bring to a gig. "You have to find the center of the song. I want to know what the song's about. I want to know what the emotion should be. And you just don't play too much. To play music is just listening."
As for how much respect he has for Ian Hunter, Holley suggests, "It's about time, for godssakes: Let's get Ian into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, then let's play a big New Year's Eve bash in Cleveland."

PHOENIX FILMMAKER STAGES FAKE TERRORIST ATTACK
Michael D. Turley was arrested Monday, nearly two months after the bizarre film was posted to YouTube. He posted $5,000 bond and was released.
Police also are recommending charges against the teen actor, whose name was not released because he is a minor.
Turley was charged with creating a false impression of a terrorist act, endangerment, contributing to the delinquency of a minor and misconduct involving simulated explosives.
In the film, the narrator, who police identified as Turley, said he wanted to see how long it took authorities to respond to a terrorist incident. The introduction to the video mentions the July 20 theater shooting in Aurora, Colo., that killed 12.
The first officer finds Turley and the teen in a neighborhood, standing in Turley’s driveway.
The officer calmly tells the boy to put down the weapon and Turley to put down the camera. He doesn’t draw his gun.
Officer James Holmes, a police spokesman, said Turley told the officer they were just filming a movie, and the officer took down their names and left.
Oddest thing, what was the name of the shooter in Colorado? And the name of the police spokesperson? One and the same.
Just a coincidence? I think not.
That was a joke.
AFGHANISTAN HELMET CAM VID SHOWS U.S. SOLDIER DRAWING TALIBAN GUNFIRE AWAY FROM ‘PINNED DOWN’ SQUAD
The soldier and his squad were doing “recon” and intelligence gathering outside a village in the Kunar Province of Afghanistan when they were pelted with heavy machine gun fire from the Islamist Taliban. The soldier stated: “I got a hit a total of 4 times. My helmet cam died and i made it down the mountain on my own. I was also hit in the side of my helmet and my eye pro was shot off of my face. We were doing overwatch on the village to recon and gather intel. I was point heading down the face of the hill with the LT. when we got hit. the rest of the squad was pinned down by machine gun fire. I didn’t start the video until a few mins into the firefight for obvious reasons. I came out into the open to draw fire so my squad could get to safety.”
He goes on: “A round struck the tube by my hand of the 203 grenade launcher which knocked it out of my hands. When I picked the rifle back up it was still functional but the grenade launcher tube had a nice sized 7.62 cal bullet hole in it and was rendered useless.”
The video description also says no bullets “penetrated his body armor, and he made it home with no permanent injuries.”
