In the month just previous to a contested election the unemployment figure, unchanged for 43 months, drops dramatically.
What is mysterious is the fact that there is the divergence in the two surveys done by the Labor Department.
The Household Survey showed a gain of 873,000 people employed in September - resulting in the surprise drop in the unemployment rate - while the Establishment Survey only showed a rise of 114,000.
The total employment figure is the highest one-month jump in 29 years.
I guess we are expected to believe that in one month people suddenly all found jobs.
The philosophy of nonviolence only makes sense if the powerful can be made to recognize themselves in the powerless. But the principle of empathy recognizes that there are more subtle forms of violence to which we are answerable. The spirit of empathy condemns not only the use of firehoses and attack dogs to keep people down but also accountants and tax loopholes to keep people down. I’m not saying that what Enron executives did to their employees is the moral equivalent of what Bull Connor did to black folks, but I’ll tell you what, the employees at Enron feel violated. When a company town sees its plant closing because some distant executives made some decision despite the wage concessions, despite the tax breaks, and they see their entire economy collapsing, they feel violence . . .

And I think that after viability it is legitimate for the state to prohibit late-term abortions as long as there is an exception for the mother’s life and health. And I don’t feel that it is appropriate for me to simply dictate to that person, to that woman what she should do with her body.
