Too Much, Ian Hunter, The Artful Dodger

Too Much is an unusual song to open a Hunter CD since it is slow start but this is the introduction to the rockers that will follow on the remainder of the release; although, the CD is not as much of a rocker as Ian Hunter's Dirty Laundry. Nonetheless, Hunter likes this song a great deal since it is atmospheric with a terrific mood. It is too slow to play live or Ian would play this favorite. There is an early version released on the Experiments CD on the box set.

Hunter is asking is it too much to be in love. He feels that it may be asking too much and he might not get the answer he would like. He finishes the song with a flourish:

Maybe you don't want me
I'm so scared of losing you
I never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity
Watch me screw up this one too
It's so hard to talk about love
I'm leaving now, oh it's just
'n all I ever wanted
Was you - is that too much?

Too Much

(Ian Hunter)

All I ever wanted was to lose myself in you
All I ever needed was you to need me too
You're all I ever think about
I hunger for your touch
'n all I ever wanted
Was you - is that too much?

I hate the pain of loving you
It happens all the time
I never needed anything or anybody
Until your eyes met mine
I'm waiting for your answer babe
What's gonna become of us?
'Cos all I ever wanted
Was you - is that too much?

It is too much to ask
That this man with a past
Could be happy at last
With a future like you
It is too much to ask
Is it too much of a task
Am I going to fast - for you?

Maybe you don't want me
I'm so scared of losing you
I never miss an opportunity to miss an opportunity
Watch me screw up this one too
It's so hard to talk about love
I'm leaving now, oh it's just
'n all I ever wanted
Was you - is that too much?

This is a strong album, though it takes a couple of listens to get used to. This is mainly the fault of Too Much, which is a slow opener - the rockers come later, but it is not another Laundry (that said, tho', a friend of mine bought this album immediately after the Burnley gig purely on the strength of Too Much).

To Love a Woman, Ian Hunter, Overnight Angels

To Love a Woman is the penultimate song on Overnight Angels and is a more traditional love song unlike Bastard. Hunter thought that this would be a good vehicle for Rod Stewart to sing; it never reached him though. The key is too high for Ian and sounds more in Stewart's range. The love song contained production tricks, multilayered chorus vocals, and a style that could have been done by The Fabulous Rhinestones.

To Love a Woman

(Ian Hunter)

To love a woman
Lost and lonely through the night
My baby doesn't hear me right
Cross my heart and hope to die
The words won't come although I try
It's there beneath me deep and strong
And when I speak it sounds so wrong
Oh cross my heart and hope to die
I'll never know the reason why
You and I were so in love
And if the sun won't shine
I'll be warm enough for the both of us
To love a woman
To love a woman
To love a woman
To love a woman

Sometimes when I'm away from you
I love you more you know its true
Oh cross my heart and hope to die
This loneliness is good sometimes
And you'll return smile over me
And I still can't say what's plain to see
But cross my heart and hope to die
You'll never know how hard I try
You and I we fell in love
And if the sun won't shine
I'll be warm enough for the both of us
To love a woman
To love a woman
To love a woman
To love a woman
To love a woman
To love a woman
To love a woman
To love a woman

Loving a woman like you ain't hard to do
You know it happens all the time
To love a woman another woman
To love a woman ain't never been hard
(Cross my heart and hope to die)
To love a woman
To love a woman
To love a woman
To love a woman
To love a woman
To love a woman
To love a woman

So I'll go on through this night
Wishing the words to come out right
Cross my heart and hope to die
This stubborn tongue's gonna make me cry
Just accept me as I am
Understand I'm a quiet man
Cross my heart and hope to die
I dread the day you say goodbye
You and I we fell in love
And if the sun won't shine
I'll be warm enough for the both of us
To love a woman
To love a woman
To love a woman
To love a woman
To love a woman

These Feelings, Ian Hunter, Man Overboard

These Feelings is a detailed and reflective autobiographical song and celebrates long-term affection. It is touching with a simplicity and truth that is hard to be denied. The reaction to this song by some is that it is one of the weakest on the CD but although the theme is common, the sensitivity and sentiment is not easy to pull off. It is all about love, and specifically about Hunter's wife, Trudi. It is a piano song and producer Andy York added a mystical sound. Ian favors ambiguity on songs so we as the listeners can draw our own conclusions but he states there is an element of truth about this song as opposed to manufactured songs such as Honaloochie Boogie

These Feelings

(Ian Hunter)

I wake up every morning to your pretty face smile
You ain't really changed much although it's been a while
From humble beginnings to the house on the hill
I've always loved you and you know I always will

And I still got these feelings, these feelings, these feelings
Still got these feelings, what can I do?
I just want you to know I can't let 'em go
Cos I still got these feelings, these feelings for you

I remember the moment that you first caught my eye
A voice in my head said "I've got to have you in my life"
There were times that were lean, there were times it was bad
We turned 'em in to the best times we ever had

And I still got these feelings, these feelings, these feelings
Still got these feelings, what can I do?
I just want you to know, they grow and they grow
I still got these feelings, these feelings for you

Once in a while we walk back down that road
The spirit's still willing and the music always flows
You saved my life, you are my best friend
I just want you to know I'll be with you 'till the end

'Cos I still got these feelings, these feelings, these feelings
Still got these feelings, what can I do?
I just want you to know, lo and behold
I still got these feelings, these feelings for you

Yeah, I still got these feelings, these feelings for you

Ballads have always been a strong point with Ian, and these are prominent especially on the second half of the album. Not all work, however, with These Feelings being a particular weakness.

Theatre of The Absurd, Ian Hunter, Short Back and Sides

The LP was not always well received but the only attempt at a reggae-flavored song is Theatre of The Absurd. The song lived up to its promise. This is song about Brixton and the fruitful collaboration of rock and reggae as Ian adapted another poem for a musical format. Hunter saw the flowering of mixing two forms of music as early as 1973 and culminated with the Clash. Ian contrasts his rock theater of the absurd with Mick Jones' music. Neither Mick Ronson nor Hunter understood reggae but leaned on Mick Jones for the effects, sound, and ideas. Belatedly, Hunter thought Brixton Rock would have made a better title and is reminiscent of the Clash's Guns of Brixton. As Mick Ronson and Hunter were out of ideas Jones came in and started with this song and his stylings which stretched to the entire album. At the time Ian says he and Ronson were bored, idle, and lazy allowing Jones to take creative control.

There is an alternative version and a live version from 1981.

Theatre Of The Absurd

(Ian Hunter)

My teeth turned seven shades darker
as I sit 'n' write these words
and London's gettin' paler
in my theatre of the absurd.
You figured for an evening
and you made it all worthwile.
It's seldom people have a job
and even rarer that I smile.

Play me some, play me some,
play me Brixton power.
Teach your children to be them
and never ever ours.
Play me some, play me some,
play me Brixton power.
Someone took the park away
but they left a lonely flower.

And if your songs be classics,
throw them to the herd.
Truth is where they came from
and not this theatre of the absurd.
Some say you wanted to play for me
but it's only what you've heard
that made you want to capture me
in your theatre of the absurd.
It was not me, I said myself
and you must do so, too.
I hope you have the strength to stay
when I'll be watchin' you.

So baby,
play me some, play me some,
play me Brixton power.
Teach your children to be them
and never ever ours.
Play me some, play me some,
play me Brixton power.
Someone took the park away
but they left a lonely flower.

Oh when I got here back home tonight
something within me stirred.
Oh it must have been a different kind of play
that touched my theatre of the absurd.
Now I'll be on my way alone
But an interesting thing occurred
See nobody ever shared too much
in my theatre of the absurd.
And there I was back in London,
thought about history.
It was just like being in school again
but I felt something movin' in me.
Hearin' just a bit of the future,
oh it's comin' and it's still blurred
and that's the only thing worth living for
in my theatre of the absurd.

Come on,
play me some, play me some,
play me Brixton power.
Teach your children to be them
and never ever ours.
Oh play me some, play me some,
play me Brixton power.
Someone took the park away
but they left a lonely flower.

(Beautiful)
Play me some, play me some,
play me Brixton power.
Play me some, play me some,
play me Brixton power.
(John, come on)
Play me some, play me some,
play me Brixton power.
Oh, play me some, (Come on, Eric) play me some,
play me Brixton power.
Oh, play me some, play me some,
play me Brixton power.

The Truth, The Whole Truth, Nuthin' But The Truth, Ian Hunter, Ian Hunter LP

The slow, funky burn of the The Truth, the Whole Truth, Nuthin' but the Truth is captivating and love gone wrong is a perennial topic of interest in pop songs. It's a great combination of Hunter's vocal, Mick Ronson's guitar, and the driving back beat that makes this song so strong. It is one of those honest love songs similar to Bastard. Ian says the lyrics are ambiguous but he wrote it musically with Mick's guitar in mind for his incredible playing, in particular, the middle scream section. Ronno dove right in and the slow, simplicity of the song lets the guitar soar. Just before the AIR Studios session, Mick saw a review for his unappreciated Play Don't Worry LP that was vicious and personal. Ronson read the review, internally charged, and burnt his searing solo in response. Take that! Mick laid it down in five minutes. Want more info? Two live versions both from 2004 extend the length of the song and keep up the strong beat.

The Truth, The Whole Truth, Nuthin' But The Truth

(Ian Hunter)

Lonely days lonely nights
Hoping thing's gonna turn out right
You had me hanging on a string
For you I did most anything
You don't give me no
The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
Its a blind mans eye baby ain't no youth
The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
Don't need your lies I got my proof

Put your face up to my window
Ask me baby what did I see
Well I know I know you ain't right
I know you ain't right for me
You don't give me no
The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
Gods little baby's got nothing to shoot
The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
Get your kicks on a different route
All I want is the truth
All I want is the truth

All I want is
The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
Blind mans eye baby ain't no use
The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
Don't need your lies I got nothing to prove
The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
Gods little baby's got nothing to shoot
The truth, the whole truth, nothing but the truth
Get your kicks on a different route
Don't hurt ya Don't hurt ya
The truth don't hurt ya
The truth don't hurt ya
Don't hurt ya don't hurt ya

That's When The Trouble Starts, Ian Hunter, Fingers Crossed

That's When The Trouble Starts the first song on the CD begins with a "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah" bang, and cracks like The Rolling Stones used to do. Pop songs are simple so anyone can do it, right? It looks easy just like fast food since so-called singers try Karaoke and you are cool like "fifty shades of stupid." Fifty shades is a reference to the erotic romance novel wedded to the famous 15 minutes of fame quotation misattributed to Andy Warhol. The point of the song is clear it is not as easy as you think to write a pop hit and stars are not really born on Simon Cowell reality shows. The shows are all flashing lights, artificial music, and you are out in fifteen minutes. It's similar to a dare go ahead and try because that's when the trouble starts.

Ian Hunter On Track for Sonicbond Publishing, TheDoctorOfDigital@pm.me

Fifty Shades of Grey is a 2011 erotic romance novel by British author E. L. James.[1] It became the first instalment in the Fifty Shades novel series that follows the deepening relationship between a college graduate, Anastasia Steele, and a young business magnate, Christian Grey. It is notable for its explicitly erotic scenes featuring elements of sexual practices involving BDSM (bondage/disciplinedominance/submission, and sadism/masochism). Originally self-published as an ebook and print-on-demandin June 2011, the publishing rights to the novel were acquired by Vintage Books in March 2012.

15 minutes of fame is short-lived media publicity or celebrity of an individual or phenomenon. The expression was inspired by a quotation misattributed to Andy Warhol: "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes." Attributed to two other people, the first printed use was in the program for a 1968 exhibition of Warhol's work at the Moderna Museet in StockholmSweden.[1] The phenomenon is often used in reference to figures in the entertainment industry or other areas of popular culture, such as reality television and YouTube.

That's When The Trouble Starts

(Ian Hunter)

It looks so easy, ain't nothin' to it
Fast food, anyone can do it
You got your start on Karaoke, Heading straight down the sewer of reality
You think you're cool, you think you're wicked. Ahhh, fifty shades of stupid
After your 15 minutes of fame
Look out, here comes the howlin' rain

That's when the trouble starts
That's when the trouble starts
Ego messin' with your brain
That's when the touble starts
That's when the trouble starts
Now trouble is your middle name

You got no soul, you got no passion,
who cares - it's goin' outta fashion
You got the gutter, you're takin' up space,
Pretty soon you're vanishing without a trace
The lowest common denominator, ahh I'll see you later
After your 15 minutes of fame
Look out, here comes the howlin' rain

That's when the trouble starts, that's when the trouble starts
Trouble going to screw ya, that's when the trouble starts
That's when the trouble starts, and you ain't gotta clue
That's when the trouble starts, that's when the trouble starts
Trouble gonna get ya (yeah)

That's when the trouble starts, that's when the trouble starts
And you don't know what hit ya
You don't know what hit ya
You don't know what hit ya
You don't know what hit ya

Kiss N' Make Up, Ian Hunter, Defiance Part 1

Kiss N' Make Up (featuring Taylor Hawkins and Billy Bob Thornton) is a fine examination of the get over yourself state of our world of selfishness, self-absorption, self centeredness. We are only entitled to what we earn, and not just financially. Leaders are literally destroying everything the Founding Fathers fought to protect, as they will never seemingly agree to compromise; and in the UK the politicians are not working for the people that elected them either. It's a song against stupidity that Hunter has taken aim against consistently; he is not political but lashes out against the denseness of elites.

Ian Hunter On Track for Sonicbond Publishing, TheDoctorOfDigital@pm.me

Can't tell which Billy is singing the vocal on alternating verses... I'm thinking probably Thonrton because that lead guitar is Gibbons without a doubt.

Angel, Ian Hunter, Defiance Vol. 1, any connection to 1987 John Jansen YUI Orta?

In Angel  (featuring Taylor Hawkins and Duff McKagan) the main lyrics are not related but the chorus is reminiscent of Hunter's song Overnight Angels; the song loudly and abruptly begins, and the repeated "Angels, angels, angels, angels" near the end reprise the original Overnight AngelsRed Letter Day from Ian Hunter's Dirty Laundry in 1995 also comes to mind. Brilliant lyrics abound throughout this heartfelt appreciative tribute to Trudi. The melody fits the sentiment like a glove, and the song is a true highlight of the couple's almost fifty year marriage. Ian notes "It's hard to kiss an angel. The harps are always getting in the way." The lyrics come from the heart but the song features signature piano and amazing anthemic guitar chords. It features not one, but three guitar solos and the line up of musicians is just awesome. The late great Taylor Hawkins on drums in a restrained, yet beautifully laid down style, along with Duff McKagan, Waddy, and Brad.

Livin' In A Heart from YUI Orta was first entitled Angel but they are different songs.

Very reminiscent of Red Letter Day from Ian Hunter's Dirty Laundry 1995.

My fave from Defiance Pt1 for sure. This is simply classic Ian Hunter, a stadium filling song with signature piano, amazing anthemic guitar chords and words from the heart of our greatest singer songwriter. It's a towering hulk of a song, lyrically beautiful, sung from the heart as only Ian can do. His ballads have always been my faves, and this for me is possibly his greatest to date. It features not one, but three guitar solos and the line up of musicians is just awesome. The late great Taylor H on drums in a restrained, yet beautifully laid down style is the baby of the group at 53, with Duff, Waddy and Brad heading towards the seventies in age and beyond.

Defiance, the song, Ian Hunter, Defiance Vol. 1

The album opens in glorious style with the title track Defiance, as hard-rocking as anything Ian has recorded for many years. The song is about Hunter doing things his way and not giving in to current trends, noting "Got an 'F' for squanderin' those golden years". Now that's defiance! The picture is of an ordinary kid who is defiant and has lived a long life doing the same. The song features Slash from Guns N' Roses who had played with Hunter Ronson at the Hollywood Palace on 13 November 1989. They played White Light/White Heat and proved to be an awakening for Hunter. He and Ronson wanted to rock as hard as newer players such as Slash.

Don't Tread On Me, Ian Hunter, Defiance Vol. 1

Don't Tread On Me examines the issue of ageism. It reminds me of Hello In There" by lyricist, John Prine. Respect is the key Hunter says and the same phrase was used by Metallica. The phrase originated with the motto on the Gadsden flag which is an historic expression of American patriotism. Ian appropriates the motto in the song as a more general expression of personal freedom and individualism which remains an American cultural trait.

Hang by for heavy burden when you can't get a word in
Nobody knows you're hurtin', you're an invisible man
Nobody talkin' to you, everybody lookin' straight through you
Everybody tryin' to screw you, they don't give a damn
No, they don't give a damn

Don't try pushin' me around 'cause I'm gonna stand my ground
I ain't no lost and found, I could be your worst enemy
Everybody chimin' in and nobody listening
Everybody know everything, ever to need
Ever to need, don't tread on me

(Don't tread) I've got to sting like poison ivy
(Don't tread on me) I can crawl back
(Don't tread) and I've got a long memory
(Don't tread on me) with my back against the wall
(Don't tread) I can beat you all
(Don't tread on me) ain't treading on you, so don't tread on me

I ain't lookin' for charity and I sure ain't lookin' for sympathy
Just lookin' for a chance to be somebody, somebody, hey
I ain't no nickel and dime, maybe I've fallen out of time
But poverty ain't no crime, respect is the key
Respect is the key, respect is the key
Respect is the key, don't tread on me

(Don't tread) I've got to sting like poison ivy
(Don't tread on me) I can crawl back
(Don't tread) 'cause I've got a long memory
(Don't tread on me) with my back against the wall
(Don't tread) no, I could beat you all
(Don't tread on me) ain't treading on you, so don't tread on me

Don't tread on me
(Don't tread) I've got to sting like poison ivy
(Don't tread on me) I can crawl back
(Don't tread) 'cause I've got a long memory
(Don't tread on me) with my back against the wall
(Don't tread) oh, I could beat you all
(Don't tread on me) I ain't treading on you, so don't tread on me

Don't tread on me
Don't tread on me
Don't tread on me
Don't tread on me
Don't tread on me
Don't tread on me
Don't tread on me
Don't you tread on me

Originating as a motto on an iconic Revolutionary War flag, don’t tread on me is a historic expression of American patriotism. Today, it may be used as a more general expression of personal freedom and individualism.

Nice touch on the congas by Rich Pagano.

This Is What I'm Here For, Ian Hunter, Defiance Part 1

This Is What I'm Here For (featuring Taylor Hawkins and Joe Elliott) is a terrific summation for the career of Mr. 'Unter and is the earthy counterpoint to SalvationIt is Hunter's declaration of how he is ordinary but he is here on earth to create music. And, we know Defiance Vol. 2 is on the way. Ian is still doing exactly what he has enjoyed doing for decades and although he got into the game later than he would like he is in his element making music. Early on he struggled to make it in music from his youth as chronicled in Have Guitars Will Travel: A journey through the beat music scene in Northampton 1957-1966 and this song is the companion to the theme of Defiance. He was over the hill at 30 but now 50 years later he is still here and when he's through he will let us know. Might as well enjoy it: here he is!

. We, the fans/ listeners/ travelers and followers are the truly blessed recipients of his continuing drive to "make another". He isn't through, Part 2 is on it's way. And if Part 1 is any indication, we are in for another masterpiece from one of music's masters!

Guernica, Ian Hunter, Defiance Vol. 1

Guernica has an important history and Hunter sings of the analogous manner in which his songwriting works which is similar to painters. Ian maintains that the words write themselves as paintbrushes and colors inform the artist. It's as if creative people have their antennae out and they receive messages. The actual painting by Pablo Picasso, as in the song Michael Picasso, is a large 1937 oil painting. It is one of his best-known works and regarded by many art critics as the most moving and powerful anti-war painting in history. It is exhibited in the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid. Picasso’s motivation for painting the scene in this great work was the news of the German aerial bombing of the Basque town whose name the piece bears, which the artist had seen in the dramatic photographs published in various periodicals, including the French newspaper L'Humanité. Despite that, neither the studies nor the finished picture contain a single allusion to a specific event, constituting instead a generic plea against the barbarity and terror of war.

I just wanted to tell you I love you.
I just wanted to tell you I care
I saw you today on Humante
I just want you to know that I’m there
Gotta whole other world standin’ next to me
Little angels directing my hands
They won’t let me choose from the colors I use
They want violet ‘n’ black like Cezanne
The rage inside is hard to hide – a rabid orchestra
When I painted Guernica
These are dangerous time for a thinker
I’m a stranger in a strange land
If you think for yourself – you’re a traitor
It’s like walkin’ on quicksand
So I work in the shadows of uncertainty
Waitin’ for that knock on the door
A Gauleiter says, “Is this your idea?”
I said, “No, I thought it was yours”
Just to throw ‘em off track – I went all the way back
To Minotauromachy
Then I painted Guernia
Fly away – fly away – from distorted times
That scream and whine in the meadows
Fly away – fly away – from your worst nightmare
As you disappear into the shadows
Fly away – fly away – from your broken bones
Fly away – fly away – from evil
This picture screams of fractured dreams
Fly away – fly away to freedom
This picture is a chamber of horrors
This picture is a crucifixion
It will hang on the walls of eternity halls
It will never be forgiven
N’ my hands veil the truth behind images
This picture is tryin’ to explain
If its anger smashes into your consciousness
Then this picture will not be in vain
The canvas smells of rusted shells –

I created a monster when I painted guernica

I just wanted to tell you I love you
I just wanted to tell you again
I saw you today on __________
I just want you to know that I'm there
Got a whole other world standing next to me
Little angels directing my hands
They won’t let me choose from the colors I use
They want violence and black like Cezanne
The rage inside is hard to hide
I _______________
When I painted Guernica
These are dangerous times for thinkin'
I'm a stranger in a strange land
If you think for yourself, you’re a traitor
It's like walking on quicksand
So I work in the shadows of uncertainty
Waiting for that knock at the door
When a __________ says, "Is this your idea?"
I say "No, I thought it was yours"
Just to throw them off track, I went all the way back
The ________________
When I painted Guernica
When I painted Guernica
When I painted Guernica
Alright

Fly away, fly away from ________________
That's green and white in the meadows
Fly away, fly away from your worst nightmare
As you disappear in the shadows
Fly away, fly away from your broken bones
Fly away, fly away from evil
This picture screams out fragile dreams
Fly away, fly away to freedom
This picture is a chamber of horrorsThis picture's a crucifixionIt'll hang on the walls of eternity hallsIt will never be forgotten
When my hands veil the truth behind imagesThis picture is trying to explainIf this anger smashes into your consciousnessThen this picture will not be in vainAnd the camera smells arrested shells, I created a monsterWhen I painted GuernicaWhen I painted GuernicaWhen I painted GuernicaAlright

Guernica
