That's When The Trouble Starts the first song on the CD begins with a "Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah" bang, and cracks like The Rolling Stones used to do. Pop songs are simple so anyone can do it, right? It looks easy just like fast food since so-called singers try Karaoke and you are cool like "fifty shades of stupid." Fifty shades is a reference to the erotic romance novel wedded to the famous 15 minutes of fame quotation misattributed to Andy Warhol. The point of the song is clear it is not as easy as you think to write a pop hit and stars are not really born on Simon Cowell reality shows. The shows are all flashing lights, artificial music, and you are out in fifteen minutes. It's similar to a dare go ahead and try because that's when the trouble starts.

Fifty Shades of Grey is a 2011 erotic romance novel by British author E. L. James.^[1] It became the first instalment in the Fifty Shades novel series that follows the deepening relationship between a college graduate, Anastasia Steele, and a young business magnate, Christian Grey. It is notable for its explicitly erotic scenes featuring elements of sexual practices involving BDSM (bondage/discipline, dominance/submission, and sadism/masochism). Originally self-published as an ebook and print-on-demandin June 2011, the publishing rights to the novel were acquired by Vintage Books in March 2012.

15 minutes of fame is short-lived media publicity or celebrity of an individual or phenomenon. The expression was inspired by a quotation misattributed to Andy Warhol: "In the future, everyone will be world-famous for 15 minutes." Attributed to two other people, the first printed use was in the program for a 1968 exhibition of Warhol's work at the Moderna Museet in Stockholm, Sweden.^[1] The phenomenon is often used in reference to figures in the entertainment industry or other areas of popular culture, such as reality television and YouTube.

Kiss N' Make Up, Ian Hunter, Defiance Part 1

Kiss N' Make Up (featuring Taylor Hawkins and Billy Bob Thornton) is a fine examination of the get over yourself state of our world of selfishness, self-absorption, self centeredness. We are only entitled to what we earn, and not just financially. Leaders are literally destroying everything the Founding Fathers fought to protect, as they will never seemingly agree to compromise; and in the UK the politicians are not working for the people that elected them either. It's a song against stupidity that Hunter has taken aim against consistently; he is not political but lashes out against the denseness of elites.

Angel, Ian Hunter, Defiance Vol. 1, any connection to 1987 John Jansen YUI Orta?

In Angel  (featuring Taylor Hawkins and Duff McKagan) the main lyrics are not related but the chorus is reminiscent of Hunter's song Overnight Angels; the song loudly and abruptly begins, and the repeated "Angels, angels, angels, angels" near the end reprise the original Overnight Angels. Red Letter Day from Ian Hunter's Dirty Laundry in 1995 also comes to mind. Brilliant lyrics abound throughout this heartfelt appreciative tribute to Trudi. The melody fits the sentiment like a glove, and the song is a true highlight of the couple's almost fifty year marriage. Ian notes "It's hard to kiss an angel. The harps are always getting in the way." The lyrics come from the heart but the song features signature piano and amazing anthemic guitar chords. It features not one, but three guitar solos and the line up of musicians is just awesome. Livin' In A Heart from YUI Orta was first entitled Angel but they are different songs.

Very reminiscent of Red Letter Day from Ian Hunter's Dirty Laundry 1995.

My fave from Defiance Pt1 for sure. This is simply classic Ian Hunter, a stadium filling song with signature piano, amazing anthemic guitar chords and words from the heart of our greatest singer songwriter. It's a towering hulk of a song, lyrically beautiful, sung from the heart as only Ian can do. His ballads have always been my faves, and this for me is possibly his greatest to date. It features not one, but three guitar solos and the line up of musicians is just awesome. The late great Taylor H on drums in a restrained, yet beautifully laid down style is the baby of the group at 53, with Duff, Waddy and Brad heading towards the seventies in age and beyond.

Defiance, the song, Ian Hunter, Defiance Vol. 1

The album opens in glorious style with the title track Defiance, as hard-rocking as anything Ian has recorded for many years. The song is about Hunter doing things his way and not giving in to current trends, noting "Got an 'F' for squanderin' those golden years". Now that's defiance! The picture is of an ordinary kid who is defiant and has lived a long life doing the same. The song features Slash from Guns N' Roses who had played with Hunter Ronson at the Hollywood Palace on 13 November 1989. They played White Light/White Heat and proved to be an awakening for Hunter. He and Ronson wanted to rock as hard as newer players such as Slash.

Don't Tread On Me, Ian Hunter, Defiance Vol. 1

Don't Tread On Me examines the issue of ageism. It reminds me of Hello In There" by lyricist, John Prine. Respect is the key Hunter says and the same phrase was used by Metallica. The phrase originated with the motto on the Gadsden flag which is an historic expression of American patriotism. Ian appropriates the motto in the song as a more general expression of personal freedom and individualism which remains an American cultural trait.

This Is What I'm Here For (featuring Taylor Hawkins and Joe Elliott) is a terrific summation for the career of Mr. 'Unter and is the earthy counterpoint to Salvation. It is Hunter's declaration of how he is ordinary but he is here on earth to create music. And, we know Defiance Vol. 2 is on the way. Ian is still doing exactly what he has enjoyed doing for decades and although he got into the game later than he would like he is in his element making music. Guernica, Ian Hunter, Defiance Vol. 1

Guernica has an important history and Hunter sings of the analogous manner in which his songwriting works which is similar to painters. Ian maintains that the words write themselves as paintbrushes and colors inform the artist. It's as if creative people have their antennae out and they receive messages. The actual painting by Pablo Picasso, as in the song Michael Picasso, is a large 1937 oil painting. It is one of his best-known works and regarded by many art critics as the most moving and powerful anti-war painting in history. It is exhibited in the Museo Reina Sofía in Madrid. Picasso’s motivation for painting the scene in this great work was the news of the German aerial bombing of the Basque town whose name the piece bears, which the artist had seen in the dramatic photographs published in various periodicals, including the French newspaper L'Humanité. Despite that, neither the studies nor the finished picture contain a single allusion to a specific event, constituting instead a generic plea against the barbarity and terror of war.

No Hard Feelings, Ian Hunter, Defiance Vol. 1

With No Hard Feelings Hunter situates himself historically, first the World Wars, then Elvis, then Ian! He says: "A pre-war gift, a post war pest" since he was born in June 1939 before the invasion of Poland on 1 September. Most importantly, if ever there was a song that could be filled with rant and rage this is it. However, Hunter brilliantly dissects his relationship with his father Walter along the lines of Ships, Following In Your Footsteps, and as extended in 23A Swan Hill. Ian has come full circle; first, he left home at a young age, detailed the distance he felt, now no hard feelings after his parents passing. Hunter is at peace but the song is not simply introspective but Ian expresses a life lesson similar to a song by Mick Ronson, Hard Life. Here is the key line which reminds me of the humorous song by Johnny Cash, A Boy Named Sue:

When I was down, out on the skids

Trying to make a man out of me

Belatedly, his father's harshness led to Ian's survival instinct and rejection prompted his ability to be someone someday; now at a mature age it is clear to his musical peers that he attained legendary status in particular with the release of Defiance Part. 1.

That Girl Is Rock 'n' Roll sounds a bit rougher than the remainder of the LP which adds life to the effort. This simple straightforward song is summarized perhaps best by Hunter. The meaning is obvious. Some girls are rock 'n' roll, most aren't. It is obvious when you meet one; it certainly is written from an average male's point of view. We just know.

Tell It Like It Is is a co-written track, with Mick Ronson, echoes the 1960 Shakin' All Over hit by Johnny Kidd & the Pirates and is an up-tempo rocker. Kidd was one of the few British artists to have worldwide success in the pre-Beatle period. With a paucity of lyrics the song is held together by rocking musically. It sounds like it has a nod to T-Rex's Get It On which had paid homage to Chuck Berry's Little Queenie. In short, a tribute to class rock 'n' roll and rock forebears.

(I'm The) Teacher, Ian Hunter, Originally a movie soundtrack, Teachers, Once Bitten Twice Shy

During the lax period of Hunter's career in the 1980s he wrote this song for the 1984 movie soundtrack Teachers. It fits the satirical black comedy-drama well as it expresses a teacher's frustration to reach his students. Not many of the students would be expected to be successful.

There are two live releases of the song from 1987 and 1988 respectively.
